Do all dogs smell?

I’d love a dog but I have yet to meet one that doesn’t smell. Honestly, is it just a thing that dogs smell? It’s the main point putting me off. Our friends dog is lovely and comes to stay when they need her looked after. I could change many things if it were my dog (they let her sleep with them and get on the furniture which I wouldn’t)…. But it smells. Which I don’t think is actually avoidable… but is it?

Yes they do although some owners think they have special types of dogs that magically don't smell how they're supposed to!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/07/2023 22:23

I don't think my dogs too bad, he's small and has a single coat. I wash him when he looks grubby or I notice a smell.

RosieProbert · 14/07/2023 22:23

Smelling my Jack Russell makes me so happy! I literally inhale him. He smells of warmth and the outdoors and cosiness

diamondpony80 · 14/07/2023 22:25

I had a cocker spaniel when I was growing up and she was the sweetest smelling thing. She really smelled lovely. Unfortunately that changed when she got old and had issues with incontinence etc. but that’s to be expected and is part of owning a dog.

Narwhal88 · 14/07/2023 22:27

I think all dogs smell to some extent but to be fair so do humans 😂
Some smell worse because of the type of fur or because owners never wash them.
I have a cockapoo who gets groomed every 8-9 weeks and we bath her once or twice inbetween. Her breath is worse than her coat though.

If it bothers you that much then I would say you probably aren't really a dog person. You get used to your own dog and then don't smell them unless you haven't bathed them in ages. Same as everyone's house has a weird smell but you don't notice your own.

AgathaX · 14/07/2023 22:32

Poodles don't smell, providing they're bathed or showered regularly. Some dogs have a very strong smell, others not so much. I think labradors are one of the worst offenders.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2023 22:34

I've got 3 dogs and one is really smelly (she's a very hot little thing) so I bath her every 4 or 5 days

Of the other two one doesn't smell at all but she gets filthy as she is king coated and the other one only gets smelly round his neck as the small dog licks him

So it's really variable

BeverlyBrook · 14/07/2023 22:37

Yes

I have none, well two will be completing my pack very soon to make nine, instead of just coming for visits and some breeds absolutely do smell and others like my Whippets and Greyhounds are low odour. One Whippet in particular has a smell similar to a new born baby and sometimes I just inhale his neck much to his delight!

I have a 7 month old beddy whippet and said to my dh the other day that he smelt like a newborn baby!

We have always bathed/showered our dogs regularly… but not too regularly. As they roll in shit.

I hate stroking dogs that never get washed and have that greasy smell to them.

As soon as I go in a house, I can smell if there is a dog or not.

All dogs smell. Every one.

Every single house smells whether the owners want to admit it or not.

stevalnamechanger · 14/07/2023 22:42

I dog walk pt - the answer is no .

Some of my doodle mixes do not smell at all unless wet .

Terriers / labs and those with a more waxy / oily coat smell the worst

StarDolphins · 14/07/2023 22:45

I love my dogs smell, sort of a mix of biscuits & fresh linen (since I wash the throws in the sofa so much!) when they get wet they all smell!

Mollymalone123 · 14/07/2023 23:15

I have shelties and they dont smell doggy.friends have labs and they stink and also golden retriever is v smelly.my dogs are regularly groomed.Friends’ dogs aren’t and the labs of course go swimming a lot!once they had an ear infection and you could smell it a mile off

Strawberrypicnic · 14/07/2023 23:16

I've got a greyhound and he doesn't smell! Unlike most dogs, greyhounds have single layered coats which means you don't get the buildup of oil between the layers that causes the doggy musk. Of course if you get very close to him, you can tell he's a dog, but you cannot tell at all that we have a dog in the house. Honest! And he's awfully cute :D

changeyerheadworzel · 14/07/2023 23:17

I have whippet and he honestly does not smell.

Groutyonehereagain · 14/07/2023 23:17

Our miniature poodle doesn’t smell.

Landndialamrhf · 14/07/2023 23:23

They all smell a bit. More so if they’ve got long hair. I find the smelliest dogs are the ones that belong to people who say they don’t smell at all haha the sort of dog you pet and then can smell on your hand later, yuck.
i have a short haired dog. If he’s in the room with you, you can’t smell him. But we clean the carpets regularly and bath him regularly, his bedding all goes in the wash often too
still, if he sleeps in a room with his own blankets and bedding and the doors and windows are closed then you can smell him and the room needs airing out
if you pick him up and smell him, you can smell him.

i think you can manage it with a short haired dog though. But the odds are definitely against you. There’s doggy dry shampoo, perfume and deodorising sprays, lots of nice smelling conditioners and moisturisers and things and obviously you need to be quite house proud

Triflenot · 14/07/2023 23:23

The stinkiest dogs often have dental issues.

CBAanymoreTBH · 14/07/2023 23:24

Yes definitely...and I have dogs as do my family & friends

pristinequeen · 14/07/2023 23:25

Yes and every dog owner I know says their dog doesn't yet I have my own nose and disagree

namechange55465 · 14/07/2023 23:38

I think all dogs do smell to some extent - when they're wet for example even very clean dogs have that "wet dog" smell. But then humans smell as well.

I don't really notice the smell of my dog unless she's damp or I put my face really close to her - she's a cockapoo (show cocker X miniature poodle)

Stickmansmum · 14/07/2023 23:51

They always smell. And houses with dogs always smell of dogs too.

kitsuneghost · 14/07/2023 23:54

Yes all dogs smell. But some dog owners will tell you theirs doesn't. They get used to it.
I can often smell it on people in crowded places

YappyCamper · 14/07/2023 23:59

They all smell. People who think they don't are deluded

dovesong · 15/07/2023 00:02

I got a dog two months ago and was horrified by the dog smell. Now I don't even notice it. You really do get used to it, I just open windows to make sure house doesn't get whiffy! She's a precious little thing and smell is entirely worth it.
