Do all dogs smell?

I’d love a dog but I have yet to meet one that doesn’t smell. Honestly, is it just a thing that dogs smell? It’s the main point putting me off. Our friends dog is lovely and comes to stay when they need her looked after. I could change many things if it were my dog (they let her sleep with them and get on the furniture which I wouldn’t)…. But it smells. Which I don’t think is actually avoidable… but is it?

The only time my Westie smells is when he comes back from the groomer stinking of roses.

BungleandGeorge · 15/07/2023 17:58

All animals smell to some extent

Tulipvase · 15/07/2023 18:02

My Labrador smells like a dog.

I’ll probably get a bashing for this but she’s 2 and a bit and never had a bath….. Luckily she’s never rolled in anything awful and she does go in the river quite often. I can’t comment on the smell as they have never mentioned it but the vets said to keep doing whatever we are doing as her coat and skin are in great condition. I think less is more when it
comes to dog grooming.

They shouldn't need bathing as long as they are brushed regularly, and that makes a big difference to their stinkiness.

My Lab smells of clean dog. None of my dogs have ever had a bath. Spot cleaning for fox poo etc . All animals smell including humans.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 15/07/2023 19:44

Just go for a poodle, straight, unadulterated. Cockers, Spaniels, Labradors and any dog that has an undercoat smell, some worse than other unless you wash them often, so if you get a poodle mix your chances of a stinky smell go up to 50%.

Now, if you don’t wash a dog for 2 months, every breed of dog stinks unless you are used to the smell

I’m pretty sure that regularly washing a dog like a Labrador (double coated) has the opposite effect of making them smell nice.

It’s a bit like ears and anal glands. Leave them alone unless there is an actual issue. Of course some breeds are more prone to infections than others but that aside, leave them alone.

hermioneee · 15/07/2023 20:13

Yes. Every dog smells apart from mine who does smell but he smells delicious.

Leonberger · 15/07/2023 20:14

My dogs smell doggy, there’s a lot of coat to stink though. I don’t notice it unless I’ve been out and come back though, must be noseblind.

I have managed to minimise it with no soft furnishings at all, regular brushing and daily hoovering/mopping/wiping down walls.

Justme68 · 15/07/2023 20:23

My cockapoo smells of baby powder 🥰

HavfrueDenizKisi · 15/07/2023 21:09

I'm really averse to dog smell and always have been. Love labradors but could cope with their smell or shedding.

However we have a mini poodle and she really doesn't smell. She is professionally groomed every 6 weeks and we bathe her twice in between. To be fair, if she gets caught in the rain she has a very slight smell when wet but generally, I'd honestly say, she doesn't smell and neither does our house.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 15/07/2023 21:09

*couldn't cope with Labrador I mean....

Barleycat · 15/07/2023 21:16

Yes. Horrible smell, friends with dogs seem oblivious

42wordsfordrizzle · 15/07/2023 22:39

My lasa also hardly smells, my friends lab, who I'm looking after for a week is very stinky in comparison - and her farts too!

ToBeOrNotToBee · 15/07/2023 22:45

I have 2 staffordshire bull terriers, they are heavy shedders. My home doesn't smell.

Regular hoovering, leather sofas, any blankets, bedding regularly washed.

I find that dogs that have curly or long fur, pendulous ears, or fluffy feet smell more doggy overall.

But the pong really sets in when dogs have yeast infections on paws and ears.

Bad farts is down to diet mainly. My lab has a sensitive stomach. We have found a great food for her and she never farts and has fairly innocuous poo too. High protein is best. It took a while to find the right food though.

You can always smell a house with a dog.

This. Even my incredibly house proud friend who has a dog has a house that smells a bit doggy. It's unavoidable if you have a dog, up to you if that's something you can live with.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 15/07/2023 22:52

Every one and, every thing, smells. Whether that is a nice smell, or not, depends on various factors. When it comes to dogs, those factors are grooming and diet (including diet specific to allergies). If you keep your dog clean and groomed and on a nutritionally appropriate diet, they won’t smell bad. That’s it. Items in your home that dogs come in to contact with are another matter. And that comes down to personal hygiene standards and how often you wash and clean stuff.

YukoandHiro · 15/07/2023 22:52

Yes. Very strongly to people who don't have dogs

HappiestSleeping · 15/07/2023 23:24

I have a Labrador, and a had been mentioned, their oily coats can be fragrant. It largely depends what he's rolled in though.

Rubbish. Up until I got a dog almost 2 years I wouldn’t be able to smell every dog - not every dog smells “strongly”.

ItsMyUkelele · 16/07/2023 08:33

I've got a little border terrier. She's lovely but my God she stinks!!!

I'm constantly amazed by something so small smelling so bad.

She's still awesome though and I'd rather have her in my life than not - smells and all 😷

YappyCamper · 16/07/2023 09:52

I have dogs and many of my friends do. Some of their houses smell of dog but quite a few don't.

Perfectly illustrating my initial comment about the delusion of dog owners. I promise, they all smell. You are free to think me idiotic, just as I am free to think you deluded.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 16/07/2023 10:41

Exactly. I don't get why so many people seem offended by the idea that their animal smells a bit - of course it does. We smell too.
