Does your dog have its dog enemies?

And how do you deal with it?

Mine is great around other dogs, very friendly and happy to say hello/play when appropriate - until he sees certain dogs eg, the 2 collies from along the road, the cockapoo from round the corner, the big dog of unknown breed we sometimes see on our morning walk. Then all hell breaks loose and I’ve no idea why.

My dog is basically a big Wally that plays and gallops happily with other dogs and absolutely loves children, super gentle all round. However. There is a very sweet and docile French bulldog over our local park that brings out some kind of primal savage in him, and although he’s never physically attacked this poor dog, when he sees it he turns into a crazed slathering beast all hackles raised, teeth bared and he will circle me or zig zag ahead of me and ward it off.

There’s another dog that he’s madly in love with and forgets all the others and his ball etc when that dog arrives. He’s like an adoring love slave of this dog, who just goes about it’s business seemingly unaware.

Just btw incase anyone thinks I’ve got a wild beast out in the park, my dog has excellent recall and v well trained. As soon as he starts on this frenchie dog I put him on his lead and remove him. He’s not ever out of control.

I can believe that about the fear window when they are young - that would for with the collie-hate mine has.

The others must have looked at him the wrong way at one point more recently - he obviously holds a grudge, does ChenPup

They are just little people, bless them. Full on friendships and personalities.

My dog has no enemies. Even the ones that take exception to her, she just looks at them a bit bemused if she reacts at all and walks on by.

She doesn't really have any friends either though, I'd love for her to have a friend.

Mine is a very placid Collie x German Shepherd, he isn’t keen on any flat faced dogs but particularly Boxers. A neighbour has one and none of the dogs on our street like it though. I think Boxers are just too boisterous for him, he likes a quiet life, and he’s been set upon a number of times byStaffies and the like so is very wary now.

However, he’s never met a Spaniel which he hasn’t fallen head over heels in love with!

Mine used to really hate a boxer we saw every morning. It was never off lead and I wondered whether that was the issue.

Mine dislikes boxers too. The natural gait of a boxer is erect and tall and with the weight leaning forwards slightly. This is also the pose a dog might select if it wants to appear threatening to another dog.

Hence, poor old boxers (clowns though they are) are often on the receiving end of a mistrustful doggy stranger, ime.

I used to have a dog who had absolute apathy for all other dogs, except poodles. She'd go crazy flirty for poodles. It was hilariously weird to see her become all 'oh, young man, I've just dropped my ball and will have to bend over to pick it up'. Grin

My service dog has a distinct dislike of tan and white american bulldogs. He's very specific - that breed, that colour. He's a border collie, and that specific kind of dog (on a lead initially but too powerful for the scummy owner to control) attacked us. We were both injured (and the police were given witnesses and an address and did sweet FA even though attacking a service dog and human is a criminal offence). Ever since then if he sees that breed and colour he crosses in front of me and I can tell he's getting ready to fight. It's not obvious to anyone else, but I can tell his reactions.

Bloody hell @Quveas , that’s awful ☹️ why on earth didn’t the police do something?

I assume laziness. If I told you some of the things that our local plods haven't done, it would curl your hair. Clearly nobody is setting them enough arrest targets!

SirChenjins · 17/04/2023 17:48

That’s shocking - I’m not surprised your dog hates that breed and colour
