Does your dog have its dog enemies?

And how do you deal with it?

Mine is great around other dogs, very friendly and happy to say hello/play when appropriate - until he sees certain dogs eg, the 2 collies from along the road, the cockapoo from round the corner, the big dog of unknown breed we sometimes see on our morning walk. Then all hell breaks loose and I’ve no idea why.

DDog goes to the other extreme - she just wants to be left alone by other dogs, except for two that she ADORES. One small and fluffy, the other an enormous greyhound. No idea why! The fluffy one loves her back, and the greyhound just ignores her.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 16/04/2023 17:31

My old spaniel disliked black dogs too, which was ironic as he himself had a completely black head 🤦🏻‍♀️

He also hated/was afraid of (which manifested as fear-aggression) the ginger Staffy that lived round the corner from us. The only way I could get him past was to have a treat in my other hand and get him focused on that so he wasn’t looking at Ginger Staffy’s house. Luckily he was very food oriented!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/04/2023 17:33

Yes there's two spaniels we see quite regularly on our walks that he hates with a passion. One in particular is his nemesis.

I have no clue what either dog has done to deserve his hatred but we just keep a wide berth if we see them.

So what do you all do when your dog has morphed into the Tasmanian devil in the split second it’s taken to notice The Enemy?

Always try and spot the enemy before your dog does. If it's too late, grab the dog (easier if there's a harness), apologise loudly and profusely, and drag DDog away kicking and screaming.

At the Tasmanian devil point, they're in no fit state psychologically to learn anything useful.

SirChenjins · 16/04/2023 18:21

That’s pretty much my tactic so far @ProbablyDogNappersHunX - complete with a fulsome apology and a red face.

I must look a complete loon running in the opposite direction, squeaking his ball and waving my arms madly as I try and make sure he doesn’t spot the dreaded collies.

My collie does the stalking, creeping thing, a lot of other dogs don't like that. She dislikes black labradors. She likes nearly all spaniels. There is a huge newfoundland up the road who is friendly and a bit bouncy. My collie is scares stiff of him and literally pretends he is invisible

Glenthebattleostrich · 16/04/2023 18:29

Yep, we have 2 doodles who live close by, look really similar. One my dog offers her arse to and practically wags her whole body when she sees him. The other she can't stand, absolutely hates the smell of him!

Also most staffies, apart from one staffy cross she adores. She loves rotties and working labs.

there is also a man we see sometimes on our walks and she absolutely loathes him, tail gets tucked and she growls if he gets close. No idea why!

Framilode · 16/04/2023 18:30

My dog is not very sociable. She is generally OK with other dogs, just not interested BUT she hates my daughter's pug. When we got her I thought they would be best friends but no go, to the extent that she has a go at every other pug she meets

Gherkingreen · 16/04/2023 18:32

My patterdale terrier cross isn't keen on many other dogs tbh, but he's either on the lead with us, or when he's off lead in woods, he doesn't approach other dogs but they do approach him. Some he tolerates, others he shouts at. Black labs are his particular nemesis and the neighbour's tiny white barky thing makes him really cross if we see it out on a walk.
I usually cross the road or treat him to hold his attention as other dogs walk by if I think he's going to bark, just less stressful for everyone.

MotherOfGreyhounds · 16/04/2023 19:03

My boy is generally very tolerant of other dogs. But he doesn't like small yappy dogs who jump up at his face and woe betide any dog that makes the mistake of jumping up at his back. They will get his big boy bark and make no mistake.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 16/04/2023 20:09

The Jack Russell we had when I was a child was surprisingly (for an arsey terrier breed) chilled with most dogs, with the exception of the Old English Sheepdog - what happened to them, you never see any around these days? - that we always used to meet coming in the opposite direction on morning walkies. It was his life’s ambition to sink his teeth into that furry grey neck. My mum would have to drag him away as he did his best Tasmanian Devil impression, while our Labrador practically slid past with her paw over her eyes pretending she wasn’t with him.

Danceswithweasels · 16/04/2023 20:31

My JRT hates the neighbouring Labs (non black) They are gun dogs and the 4 of them walk impeccably in a row off lead, they remain firmly eyes to the front while I wrestle with a twirling, snarling Tasmanian Devil, while apologising to the equally impeccable owner. He is so incensed by them he spends hours on his stool by the window watching their house in the distance for any movement.

OMG this made me laugh as that exactly like me and my crazy dog with the impeccably behaved neighbours dogs and owners 😆

SirChenjins · 16/04/2023 21:15

That did make me laugh @Danceswithweasels 😂

There’s a dachshund round the corner from us who does not like my dog one tiny bit. I take my hat off to him though, he stands his ground and barks like the devil (if the devil barked a high pitched yelp) as my a-hole trots on by with his nose in the air like he’d never stoop so low as to behave like that in public.

hiredandsqueak · 16/04/2023 21:28

Yes the Jack Russell who lives opposite, they loathe each other. My neighbour brought her home one day when she had slipped out when I went to the bin. She had gone to bark at him through the window and his dog was frantic. Most other dogs she's not bothered about, friendly with a few, ignores others but hates the JR.

pickledandpuzzled · 16/04/2023 21:29

Sigh, the neighbouring Akita. It's the replacement to a particularly aggressive one that used to try and get at him through our fence, so I understand his anxiety. The new one is a sweet little pup though, so it's sad really. I'd hoped they'd get on!

There are also a pair of boxers that according to their owner, every dog hates.

Mine also isn't keen on dogs that sneak up on him- if we walk past their house and they stick their nose under the gate but don't say anything he gets really twitchy.

Auntieobem · 16/04/2023 21:37

Our girl is the opposite. She ignores small dogs, and gets on with all other dogs. She has a few doggy friends who she loves playing with and will stand at the window barking and wagging her tail if they go past. One black lab in particular is her best pal. He won't walk past our house without her coming out to see him.

StillMedusa · 16/04/2023 22:28

Mine hates Italian Spinones... for no reason I can fathom (there are 4 in our little town).. she is terrified and goes bonkers if she sees them.

She also hates two spaniels that walk down our road.. or the owner..I'm not quite sure which, but she's not keep on spaniels generally, i think they move too fast and flappily.

On the flip side she is besotted with an Aussie Shepherd and cries if we drive past him in the car. She is also a complete tart with rough collies (the Lassie type)

She is not keen on disabled people who walk oddly, or anyone with very dark skin or clothes which is mortifying ( yet she adores DS2 who has special needs and has an odd walk!)

Sunnysunbun · 16/04/2023 22:35

Yes a massive German Shepherd. She hates him. The owner crosses the road when she comes close - she is about 1/8 of his size. Absolutely lunatic.

Giggorata · 16/04/2023 22:41

My three are friends with some of my friends' dogs and often play together on walks, but the younger lab will not accept any liberties and woe betide any of them that sniff her bum or play bite her.
My old lab hates Boston terriers because one barked at her and frightened her on one of her first outings as a pup. She has borne this grudge for 11 years, including having to be prevented from going for one who appeared on the TV during a dog programme.
My young Shepherd, true to breed specifications, is not good with other dogs unless she is formally introduced, sometimes not even then. But she is stand offish rather than aggressive, unless they push it.

ilovesushi · 16/04/2023 23:06

She thinks they are all friends. She is like the dog version of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.

ladygindiva · 16/04/2023 23:16

TheVanguardSix · 16/04/2023 10:49

The black lab two doors down hates my chocolate lab. Can’t walk past him on the towpath without him growling and snarling at my boy. Oddly, once they’re both on the open meadow, it’s fine! They never interact but at least the black lab isn’t gunning for my dog. But the minute we share a path or walk past his house, black lab believes he’s some Cartel Cane Corso guarding the drug lair. Calm down, love. You live in a Victorian Terrace in leafy West London with a Tesla out front. No hollow breeze block or corrugated roofing as far as the eye can see.

🤣🤣🤣

ladygindiva · 16/04/2023 23:17

All flat faced dogs, so frenchies, pugs etc he just hates them. Also German shepherds.

QueenSmartypants · 16/04/2023 23:19

Ah, poor thing. My boy used to be terrified of yorkies for this reason - he's about 10x their size 😆

Apparently there's a 'fear window' when they're young when if they're scared by something it becomes hard wired into their system.
