Cockapoo vs cavapoo vs poochon

I am thinking of getting a dog and confused on which of these I should go for. I am first time dog owner and have a 1 year old toddler who'll be turning 2 this year. I go to work some days each week and wonder which dog might be best suited for our family. Appreciate any suggestions.

Don't get any dog while you have a toddler. Don't get any dog while you are out of the house at work for multiple days and hours at a time. Don't get any dog if money is tight for you in any way, or likely to become so.

Wait until toddler is older to reassess the whole situation and learn a great deal about dogs and their requirements in the meantime.

I'd go for the smallest one, that way you can pack it more easily in your suitcase when you go on holiday.

(Saves a lot of money instead of those pesky dog passports and health certifications.)

I'm going to assume this post is genuine OP.

Firstly do not get any of the dogs you've listed. They are mixed breeds, bred without regulation purely to look cute.

Do NOT get a cocker spaniel. They are EXTREMELY energetic and need several miles of walking a day. They would not be at all suitable with a toddler.

A cavalier king Charles spaniel is a much better choice for a family. They are smaller and generally a lot less low energy and are know to be far more lazy.

Lastly a few questions to help you further -

Have you ever owned a dog before?

Where do you intend to get the dog from?

How did you come to narrow down to the breeds you listed? they're completely different breeds which leads me to believe you've chosen purely on looks and done absolutely no research into the 'breeds'.

Don’t go for any dog with the word poo in its breed, it’s crossed with a poodle and they’re not the best of breeds! Snappy, neurotic and not good with kids. The only reason they’re all the rage is because it makes them hypoallergenic

Obviously none of these dogs are suitable in your situation. Release of your situation, I wouldn’t advise anyone to get a cross-breed (mongrel) from a so called ‘breeder’ like this. Either get a properly well bred dog from a real, responsible, breeder or get a rescue.

What a load of stuck up bullshit on this thread. Poo crosses are amazing and the reason they are everywhere is because of this. Cavapoos and cockerpoos are brilliant with children. They don’t shed hair. They are friendly but playful. What is all this nonsense written here.

I agree that it is better to wait until your toddler is older, have money issues and not to do it if you will be leaving the dog alone while you work (unless you have a dog sitter organised). But I am shocked at the stuck up comments written here.

They are all mongrels so why not go to a shelter and adopt a mongrel that would be suitable for your family situation. They are the best advised to help. A staff or a greyhound would suit your family better as great with kids if you get the right one.

I think a one year old DC is probably the worst possible time - I suggest you delay until youngest DC is at least school age (and perhaps longer)

Have you experience of either spaniels or of poodles? Because if you couldn't face these breeds, don't attempt a cross of them.

How did you decide on this short-list? What are you actually looking for in a dog?

Have you priced up doggy day care for your working days? Can you take a long period of leave for the puppy settling in period?

Because DC is one year old.

No rescue will rehome in those circs. They often require, in the dog's interests, that minimum age for DC is 8 (or sometimes teen).

I've a 1 year old and a 9 month old cockerpoo. He's great with our son but he's far too bouncy at the moment and a lot of hard work with a toddler. Beautiful dog though, very intelligent and good natured. He's just got energy for days and enjoys a chew.

A friend has a Cockapoo and he is the most well behaved dog that she takes camping with her 7 year old boy on her own. I would wait till your LO is older, maybe 4?

She also had a dog sitter and walker as she worked part time, so that is an expense to think about.

I have experience of both ‘pure breed’ spaniels and poodles and a cross of the two is perfect for us as a family. A spaniel pure breed and poodle pure breed aren’t. OP I wouldn’t bother asking this question on here. Go into the real world and ask the thousands of families with these breeds about them and I can assure you they are delighted with them.

Join Cavapoo Club UK on Facebook. I've met two Cavapoos and both were lovely and gentle with children. But I agree with others that you should wait a bit longer till your child's older.

I agree on the leaving alone and the child being too small.

However that was not behind my ‘disdain’ comment. Behind that was all this nonsense about them being ‘common’, mongrels and no good with children. The snobbery around dogs. Holy moly.

The point is with a cross, you don't know, until it's too late, which traits (or even what sort of coat) they will have inherited from each parent. This is true of all crossbreeds. You could get a dog which is very much like the traits of one or other of the breeds, or something in the middle. Unless you are sure you can live with with the whole spectrum of the two breeds, you are taking a risk.

Yes this is true. Firstly however I would like to think ‘what coat you get’ is completely irrelevant. Then when it comes to cross breeds what tends to happen is that it means you DON’T get the extremes of each of the pure breeds. So pure breed spaniels can be so ‘full on’ for instance. And this is toned down in a poo cross breed.

This is why there are so many poo crossbreeds around. They are popular for a reason.

Don’t do it. Poodle crosses coats need a lot of maintenance. Good brushing every day and a clip every six to eight weeks to prevent matting. I have a one year old and can’t get my own hair cut that often never mind taking the dog.

I also wouldn’t do the puppy stage with a one year old. They are not old enough to understand to stay clear of the razor sharp baby teeth and claws. You’ll lose your mind trying to look after a puppy and toddler.

Working out of the house is also not a good idea. I took two weeks off work to settle in my puppy and that was even working from home. Depending on dog you can get toilet training established quickly but like toddlers they can get distracted and their bladders and bowels aren’t big enough to hold for extended periods for months and month and months so you can get the odd accident right up until adolescence even if your dog really gets it.
