I am thinking of getting a dog and confused on which of these I should go for. I am first time dog owner and have a 1 year old toddler who'll be turning 2 this year. I go to work some days each week and wonder which dog might be best suited for our family. Appreciate any suggestions.

To be honest I would wait until past the toddler stage puppies are like babies to begin with. We waited until ours were teens so now we have someone in the house that loves us 🤣

Thank carefully about getting a dog, any dog whilst your family is so young. Puppies are very hard work, I don’t think anyone realises until they get one. I know a cockerpoo and a cavapoo, both are quite nervy and crazy, not sure I would recommend tbh. Good luck with whatever you decide OP.

Think 🤔

I have a cockerpoo and unless you have a lot of time for training and walking you will have problems. There is also the possibility of them being snappy and nervous. Cavapoos seem to be a notch calmer.

We rescued a bichon x poodle. He is super smart, very affectionate and pint sized. Lovely little dog.

We have a cavapoo. He’s amazing, gentle, kind, brilliant with kids, he doesn’t shed, he doesn’t need lots of grooming, fab manage either long walks or no walks. He’s the perfect dog and is from a reputable breeder

It IS possible to get a poodle mix where both parents have been health tested, you just have to be willing to find the right breeder.

I will say though, poodle mixes take a lot of work. Generally, they don't shed (not a given, but if they are a few generations in it's a lot less likely), but because of the combination of coats they are very prone to matting.

I have a large breed poodle mix, and have taken him to the groomers every 5 weeks since he was 12 weeks old (so the last 7 months). He also needs to be brushed daily, and washing him post rainy/muddy walk is an absolute pain in the arse. That being said, it is our choice to keep him long of coat - he's very fleecy/wavey, if we just got him clipped short our life would be much easier. Our groomer said that poodle mixes are her bread and butter, but she doesn't have a single client with a dog our size that keeps them long and deals with the upkeep like we do.

Yes-they are everywhere, yes- there are breeders that could not give a shite as long as they make some money on them and yes - I'm sure there are a few out there that have picked up the worse traits from each breed, but that could happen to any mixed breed dog. There are some really, really badly bred pure bred dogs, it just seems that poodle mixes are as popular to slag off as they are to buy.

Puppies are hideously hard work, and take a lot of time and effort. Wait until your child is primary school age at least, and then do your research on breeders.

“The breeders don’t do any tests or take any care to make sure they aren’t breeding in poor genetic traits - as an example, when a reputable breeder breeds Labrador puppies, they test the parents for things like their hip and knee joint health, and their eyes (for a specific illness) - they look at the parents’ scores for these, and combine them, and they want to be as low as possible. Back yard breeders don’t take that sort of care and so you end up with puppies with life limiting conditions.”

Bullshit. Our cockapoo came from KC parents whose owners tested for everything. It’s perfectly easy to find reputable cockapoo breeders and shit breeders of other breeds. You just do your research.

Cockapoos are easy to train so don’t need a lot of training. They don’t need hours of walking other Ours is fine with an hour walking a day and 2 longer weekend walks whilst having the run of the house and garden. Just had her latest vet check who said what an incredibly healthy, happy and well behaved dog she is. She is our first and we’ve had her from 8 weeks. Wouldn’t be without her. Just done an 8 hour round trip and she was as good as gold. Such a great size and so loving, intelligent and fun.

@Blu3Salv1a - I apologise if my post wasn’t clear, but I was referring to the back yard breeders, or the reputable, KC registered ones. I clearly referred to unscrupulous back yard breeders in the paragraph before the one you quoted, and assumed it was obvious the next paragraph was about them too.
