What my stupid dog ate next

I was just congratulating myself on managing not to have to visit the vet because of something our scavenger / opportunist thief greyhound has eaten, for a whole year, when my husband shouted up the stairs to me that the hound had torn into a box of bonemeal fertiliser and obviously eaten some, though not masses.

That was yesterday afternoon. After a sleepless night mopping up sick and repeatedly checking the data sheet that states bonemeal is not toxic to dogs, I took him to the vet this morning. He's still there, and will remain on IV fluids overnight. Apparently he's now really comfy and chilled, and everyone loves him.

Honestly, he is a nightmare and not only does he not learn not to eat anything not in his food bowl, apparently we humans have not learned to expect him to eat ANYTHING even things totally unexpected.

And he's only been away for the day but I'm missing him!

What unexpected things have your dogs eaten, just to keep you on your toes? I know labradors are renowned scavengers, but I reckon greyhounds can give them a run for their money!

My old rescue dog long since departed,
Came in from the garden one sunny bank holiday with an entire warm roast chicken!
One of my poor neighbours is probably still talking about the vanishing chicken 🤣

My current dog has a thing for Lego, cleaning up her poo I found a Harry Potter figure including a wand poking up through like he was trying to escape, really made me laugh

The idea of HP trying to escape has made my morning!

Retired racing greyhound here, and I think we've got off lightly! He grabbed a full kilo bag of treats and ate about half including the packet, no harm.

Had a couple of trips to the vet when he ate the leaves from my Peace Lilies; conflicting info in the internet said they were either highly toxic or not so bad, but we wanted to be safe.

Strangely he doesn't seem to go for food in the street, but did once grab most of a discarded burger.

Also has a thing for tissues (new or used, he's not fussy!) and the occasional food wrapper from the bin so we can no longer just put them in the wastepaper basket.

Thankfully he seems to give anything dead and rotting a very wide berth, and long may it continue! Love him to bits, and considering getting him a friend but will have to thoroughly test for eating gross stuff first 🤣

My dog ate a whole raw chicken off the worktop I was prepping to put into the oven.

My other dog eats his own shit if he's not been fed enough

These are completely harmless. Silica gel=sand 😁

Silica gel is a desiccant because it can absorb up to 40% of it's weight in moisture. It could cause an intestinal blockage.

Mine eats his Mum's poo (no-one else's) and likes hankies. His brother, (who we gave to my niece) had a habit of finding and eating bags of drugs in the woods where she walked him. At least twice he had to be rushed to the vets with shaking and convulsions.

they don’t swell in the stomach:

even if they did they wouldn’t be harmful in the amounts those packets have in them anyway.

Ds1 and his dw are doing baby led weaning with their dd, and their dogs (a whippet and a retired racing greyhound) think this is a Very Good Idea! The whippet cruises round under the high chair, hoovering up bits of food that get dropped, and the greyhound stands by the high chair and the baby hand feeds him. He is particularly fond of scrambled egg and toast, apparently!

He is a counter surfer and a dreadful thief - my DIL still mutters darkly about the time she made herself a particularly delicious cheese and pickle sandwich, and found him on the table, eating it!

It’s just as well they are cute, isn’t it!

She has stuffed her face with Easter eggs, including foil wrapping. Mince Pies stolen from my daughter (4 at the time). Horse Poo. Cat poo. Grass. Stolen a naan bread off my plate.

Basically she's a gannet.
