What car for a big dog?

VickyLouT · 05/02/2023 22:49

We need to replace our car but having a mare finding something that will fit our Giant Schnoodle in. He likes to sit up in car, he is very tall. We take him on lots of country walk so I prefer him in the boot due to the mud. We have an ancient Renault grand scenic at the mo which is the right size but they don't make them like ours anymore. So many cars have either small boots or very slopey backs. Husband would prefer something eco. What cars do you big dog owners have?

Im really interested to know peoples replies as our lease is up for renewal. We have a kia sportage currently for our large German shepherd. He's very tall for a gsd (every one comments hes like a horse). He fits in the boot and can sit up but only just. Its one where you can lower the floor bit slightly. I wouldnt go any smaller than this. It's 3 years old if you wanna check the dimensions.

Are dogs allowed to drive????

tizwozliz · 06/02/2023 09:43

We have a 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid, our small lab can sit up in the boot with loads of room to spare. Not sure how much taller your dog would be. The back screen is slightly sloped but the boot is deep so there's unsloped headroom in the boot.

Sunflowers765 · 06/02/2023 14:06

My lab goes on the back seat of my Audi TT! 🤣🤣

McOrange · 06/02/2023 14:07

We have a Volvo xc90. Back seats down, dog in one half, pram / shopping / clutter and rubbish in the other

Ford custom Tourneo for my giant hounds!!

StillMedusa · 06/02/2023 16:28

We have a (don't laugh) Fiat 500 X... we traded in our VW Toureg which LOOKS much bigger but the actual boot space in the Fiat is huge and also lower to the ground which is better for our dog's joints.

Have to say the best car we have had is the Peugeot 308 SW.. estate car. HUGE boot and lowest to the floor. I'd like another! I think in general estates are better for giant dogs and their joints..so many SUVs are high up.

Spanielsarepainless · 06/02/2023 17:39

On second Ford C-Max. Vast boot, lip not high like an SUV. Good second-hand ones available. Both ours were ex-Motability.

hennaoj · 06/02/2023 21:13

What about a van based MPV like a Citroen Berlingo? They have huge, square shaped boots.

Netaporter · 08/02/2023 04:27

Giant dog owner here. Currently have a RRover with a telescopic dog ramp so share your pain. For Eco options, I’d wait for the new Kia EV9 arriving at the end of this year. Or consider the new VW ID Buzz which is smaller than an MB V class but slightly larger than an old Renault Espace. I’m planning on an EV9 having driven the EV6 which is also excellent.

Consider an estate, with a lower floor than an average SUV, if you're likely to have it when he's too old to be jumping up.

Here's a photo of the bootspace in our rav4 with 25kg lab for reference

I've not got one but I've always thought Skoda Yetis look roomy in the back for big dogs. Had a look on Autotrader and you can get ones with low road tax and high mpg.

alittleadvicepls · 08/02/2023 18:02

Mitsubishi Outlander has great boot space. Fits our English sheepdog and our doodle sitting up.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 08/02/2023 18:05

Our English pointer fits into the boot of an A2. She prefers that to being in our larger estate boot!

MaverickGooseGoose · 08/02/2023 18:10

You get more space in a zafira than an estate if they want headroom. Get a ladder to help in / out, the flat lip on the boot is very helpful. Ugly car though!

littlejo67 · 08/02/2023 18:13

We have a Dacia Duster. There is a company that makes bespoke car kennels, so it fits perfectly. Keeps all the dirt in one place. The Duster is a great size.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 08/02/2023 18:17

Skoda Yeti.

my friend had one, her has band preferred driving it over his ££££top of the kind Range Rover & it has a tall boot, not high off the ground.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 09/02/2023 20:32

Totally agree with the comment that an estate would be best. We have a BMW 540i Touring.

Chasingsquirrels · 09/02/2023 20:36

DP has a Range Rover and a small van, and a Great Dane.

fastandthecurious1 · 09/02/2023 20:40

Vw touran held our big ol rottie comfortably in the back for journeys

KendrickLamaze · 09/02/2023 20:47

Depends on where you put them but any hatch, estate or suv will be fine. I have an American Akita (60kg) and a Mondeo so I can put him in the boot or back seat depending on the journey. I used to have a mini and would put the seat down but he took up the whole back and a lot of the front 😂

Avoid a saloon.

KendrickLamaze · 09/02/2023 20:48

Not explained well. I'd put the seat down so he had the boot and the back seat.

redbigbananafeet · 09/02/2023 20:49

My 30kg lab cross sits in the boot (shelf removed and replaced with vertical grill) of my 2022 hyundai tucson. We both love this car.

LadyJ2023 · 09/02/2023 20:52
