How the hell do I get this down my dog??

Latest flea treatment the vet has given us for our very fussy dog is a big round thing which is meant to be chewed. Instruction leaflet says not to crumble or break out up. It's massive, too big to be hidden in other food. Twat dog has just sniffed it and gone fuck that, it's a trick. Have put it in the treat drawer in the hope that he forgets and I can get it out again and pretend it's a reward.

Any other ideas? Honestly, giving my dog medication is the bane of my life.

Mine enjoys the big wormer. Gannet.

Can you pop it into a tin of wet food?

AnotherAppleThief · 04/02/2023 12:04

In pate. Our dog has to take medication 3x day and isn't fussed, must have got lucky!

I could but I have to chop the wet food into little bits for the prince-dog or he won't eat it, so it'll stand out.

Pate is a good idea - thanks.

Couple of piece of pate, then tablet smeared in pate. Then another pate.

Mine wolfs down anything when expecting what went before

Catapultaway · 04/02/2023 12:09

Extreme solution... But ours used to be a nightmare, would spit it out no matter what it was coated in... Then we got another dog, now she wolf's anything down without even thinking in case he steals it... So to sum up, get another dog.

Mydogatemypurse · 04/02/2023 12:09

Cheese spread but on a bit of bread so she chews it?

Floralnomad · 04/02/2023 12:11

Just wrap it in a piece of wafer thin ham / chicken , give them a bit without the pill first then the pill bit , dogs just scoff it down without thinking about it .

marmaladepop · 04/02/2023 12:11

A tube of Primula cheese - or a tub of paté?

tabulahrasa · 04/02/2023 12:14

Less extreme than getting another dog, get a different wormer 😂

My last dog had to get a 40kg dose of the small dog one because 8 small tablets was easier than one big one.

Hoppinggreen · 04/02/2023 12:15

What I do is feed cheese, cheese, pill, cheese.
The KEY thought is to have the post pill cheese ready and held in front of the dog so it will focus on the next piece of cheese rather than the one he is eating. Also by holding it up his head will be up and it’s harder to spit things out

Walkingthedog46 · 04/02/2023 12:21

Currently giving my dog her meds. Get cheese triangles and insert tablet in the middle of one and squidge it together. Wrap cheese triangle in slice of ham like a parcel - and it goes down a treat!!

blackberryginandtonic · 04/02/2023 12:22

Came here to say what hoppinggreen said. Treat, treat, treat, pill in treat, treat held ready and waiting so he rushes, treat!

seratoninmoonbeams · 04/02/2023 12:23

My dog had this exact tablet. Like a big squidgy thing. Whatever I tried I couldn't get her to have it and she's a Labrador. When I did get it in her she promptly threw it up after half an hour. The last pills I gave her I squidged up in pate put in a ice cube tray and froze. I did plain pâté ones too as a treat. She belted them down.

Lougle · 04/02/2023 12:23

Butter is the way to my dog's heart. He'll even stand and watch me put medication in butter, then eat it willingly, because he loves it so much.

Floofydawg · 04/02/2023 12:24

These are all great suggestions but honestly all things I've tried already. The little sod is so suspicious that he sniffs everything he eats, takes it from you very carefully and then drops it on the floor to pick it apart so that he doesn't get the nasty meds. I think we have a defective dog.

Pate might work though.

How about mackerel in tomato sauce? It's so smelly that it hides the smell of any medication. May be worth a go. Otherwise is it too big to simply push down his throat?

Amicompletelyinsane · 04/02/2023 12:38

Next time all for a spot on! Some dogs are so clever

caringcarer · 04/02/2023 12:42

I have to buy wafer thin ham and wrap it all up like a mini parcel. Only way my 2 girls will take flea tablets. They woof them down rolled up in the ham though.

Quveas · 04/02/2023 12:46

I suspect I know the one! My dog isn't usually fussy about meds but this one he simply WILL NOT have. I gave up and told the vet to switch to the drops. Problem solved!

catzrulz · 04/02/2023 12:54

Seresto flea and tick collar, we get ours as part of pet plan, but you can buy them from Vets or online. They last for 8ish months. Sorted!

RDAnna · 04/02/2023 12:56

I'd crumble it. I know it says not to but if it's the only way to get it down then do it. Either the dog chews it or you crumble it. I'm no vet but don't see the difference apart from with crumbling it may not get the absolute full dose?

HarrietSchulenberg · 04/02/2023 12:59

Is it Bravecto by any chance? My dog will not go near it on its own and spits it out if wrapped in anything - I went through 2 packs of cheap ham trying it. I cut it up and hide it in a bowl of Sunday dinner, which he loves and licks his bowl clean afterwards. It's going to be in pieces when he chews it anyway so it's just starting the process 30 seconds earlier, and every last bit of it goes into him even if slathered in gravy.
Don't bother with the spot on ones, they don't work.

Ours did exactly this. Became a total phobia for her. Eventually I got a tube of the stuff below. Squeezed about an inch of it out and let her lick it straight from my fingers. Hells bells she loves it. More! Hang on, I say. Here you go. More more more. Then out of her sight I quickly grab the pill and coat it and my fingers with the paste and she licks it all off my fingers. Then I squeeze more out of the tube (no pill this time) and she has that. It's all seamless - speed is key. She doesn't stop to realise - it's all licking and swallowing rather than picking apart, dissecting, chewing and biting IYSWIM? Worth a try? Has turned the whole process around for us. No longer a trauma. She just doesn't realise there is a pill involved.

Floofydawg · 04/02/2023 13:04

Yeah it is Brave to. Why do the people who make these things make our lives so bloody difficult!

He loves mashed potato. May crumble it into that. Little fucker just managed to remove all pate from it without eating actual medication 😡
