Good morning, I’m really excited, so bear with me.
I have been contacted to view a greyhound today at our local animal sanctuary after I sent in an application form.
She is an ex racer and is five years old 🥰🥰
Any advice welcome about food etc (and your greyhound pics obviously) will be most appreciated, and I’ll catch up later. Please wish me luck.

Any recent pictures of Sally? 🥰 She sounds like she's settled really well.

No problem, one just sent 😊

Hi. Can anyone please recommend some fleece pjs? Ours would probably love some! Thank you.

Spudsdogscoats on Etsy has lovely hound clothes !

Not every Greyhound needs a muzzle. My friend has a rescue, she’s about 5 years old. She is super friendly, runs like mad, half jumping. She can out-chase my border collie. She’s had to have her dew claws taken off and they also have to be careful as their paw pads are very thin. But the good thing about muzzles is that Greyhounds are used to them, whilst my dog absolutely hates them.

Remona · 10/02/2023 08:56

She is absolutely beautiful 😍 @CarnageAhead

I am starting to think about getting a dog. I lost my two rescues several years ago and haven’t felt ready for another dog before. One of mine was part whippet and I just love skinny dogs. I would love a greyhound as they’ve such lovely temperaments and I would like to give an ex-racer a nice retirement. I’m so glad it’s working out for you and Sally.

Thank you @Remona I’m sorry you lost your rescues, they bring so much joy to your life, don’t they? 🥰
I hope you do adopt a greyhound, honestly it’s amazing 😊

I love greys. I used to have a rescue boy in my life. He adapted to home comforts very very well. Will 100% chase small furries though. I remember the first time I took him to the beach. He watched the horizon intently for ages. He was lovely

My grandad had a poodle that was mauled to death by an off lead ex racer. I absolutely love greyhounds but if I had one that was trained to race I would muzzle it personally.

OP I am delighted for you and for the lucky dog too.

I am quoting pp as my Bedlington Poodle cross is absolutely terrified of sight hounds.
When he was about a year old two visitors to our local park took their lurchers off the lead a distance away from us.
They spotted my lamb-like boy and chased him.
They couldn't recall or catch their dogs.
Our boy was so scared that when he managed to get close to us he just took off again when he saw them approaching.
I can't remember how it was sorted, I think the owners threw themselves on top of their dogs but it really traumatised my boy. He was totally exhausted and terrified.
He's been really reactive with sight hounds ever since, luckily we keep an eye out for them.

I am so relieved to see all pps saying they understand that furry creatures are likely to cause that gut reaction in their dogs.
The owners in the situation above were acting as though they were totally shocked.

Aw she's lovely, I'm so glad she's settled! 🥰🥰

Love taking our boy to the beach, it's the only place we'll let him off the lead, he'll do a couple of zoomies but he really enjoys walking through the shallow water, it must feel lovely on his paws!

That’s awful, I am so sorry your Bedlington Poodle was traumatised by the sighthounds.

I have Sally on an escape free harness and I appreciate she’ll never be able to go off lead whilst walking, and that’s fine by me. I would hate it if she harmed another dog.

@CarnageAhead Petiquette do beautiful collars in an array of colours . Sally looks lovely , how long do you think it will be until you go back to get her a friend ?

Definitelyrandom · 11/02/2023 23:42

To be fair, many greyhounds aren’t so dim that they can’t differentiate furry small dogs from artificial lures. Lurchers may be a bit different. Our ex racer (reasonably decent) chap got the hang of it straightaway and while he’ll chase a rabbit, squirrel or fox for a bit, doesn’t now go nuts even with them. He’s never had a muzzle on with us and never needed it. He plays well with most dogs we meet (though teases them by taking off at speed). One of his good mates is a Bedlington cross. Historically greyhounds hunted with other dogs (different tasks for different dogs) so it’s in their genes to be trained to behave off lead and recall.

Strawberrypicnic · 11/02/2023 23:54

Congrats, she is beautiful! Our 4 yr old boy has been with us almost 8 months now. Here he is begging for some buttered crumpets. As some others have mentioned, she will be shedding her kennel coat in the coming weeks. We also found that ours had very flaky skin during this time. The best advice we got was to add a little salmon oil to each meal, we really noticed a difference when we introduced this and he gets lots of compliments on his coat now. Maybe wait until her tummy settles down as it will likely be a little off at first due to the stress of things. Give her time to come out of her shell and for you to learn how to communicate with each other - greyhounds are much subtler than other breeds with how they communicate affection/happiness, not to mention that ex racers basically have to do so from scratch in the first place, but it will be such a rewarding journey 😊

@Strawberrypicnic He's beautiful! Looks exactly like my boy before he went grey in the face - he's 7 now.
