Good morning, I’m really excited, so bear with me.
I have been contacted to view a greyhound today at our local animal sanctuary after I sent in an application form.
She is an ex racer and is five years old 🥰🥰
Any advice welcome about food etc (and your greyhound pics obviously) will be most appreciated, and I’ll catch up later. Please wish me luck.

Congratulations! She’s lovely 🥰. I don’t have a greyhound, I have a lab that thinks he’s a greyhound when he’s running 😂 but my advice is to use a big double duvet instead of a bed as greyhounds seem to like to stretch out like my lab and they need a lot of room! You can also wrap her up in it if she gets cold (unlike my lab who hates being remotely warm!).

We’re waiting for our DD,DGCs and their beautiful rescue GH ,Their coming for the weekend… and we can’t wait 🎉 we had two rescues for years as the children grew up . Totally gorgeous animals 🥰

Mine is 8 and a half and the gentlest boy. He’s been so accepting of and calm with our 6 month old baby, right now baby is bouncing in Jumperoo and dog is sprawled out on the floor snoozing. They’re lovely dogs! Some tips:
Let them come to you. When we brought
our boy home, we had a big crate as a safe space and waited for him to approach us. For many of them it’s the first time they’ve ever been in a house! We never had any toilet accidents but just make sure you take pup out regularly to pee those first few days and reward when they toilet outside.
Greyhounds have notoriously sensitive stomachs so when you find a food that works -stick to it! We use pooch and mutt dry kibble and stick to chews with no rawhide.
Buy some toys they can push around that you can fill with treats. They encourage them to learn how to play and stimulate their brain. A snuffle mat is also great for them.
Put in place boundaries from the start eg. Our boy has never been allowed on the couch or in the bedrooms. Much harder to change once you’ve let them do something (but you might be happy with that! Our boy is just so big he’d take up the whole couch lol).
They can be nervy around other dogs because for many greys, they’ve never seen another breed before! I would advise keeping your distance and letting him look at a dog, reward with treat and praise when he looks away. You’ll be able to gauge how he is with other breeds quickly. Ours was a little reactive but we did distance and praise and now he happily walks along with other dogs and doesn’t respond to any that bark at him.
They are major couch potatoes -so prepare for lots of snoozing. Also can be fussy with rain so make sure you buy them a rain coat and fleece because they have very little body fat so will get cold easily.

Theyre such loving, gentle giants. It’s been amazing to see how much our boy has come on in the past 5 years. Good luck!!

I'm not keen on dogs, but he's absolutely lovely!

Few other things to bear in mind

They are very used to routine in racing kennels so will expect you to establish one
They are used to being on lead so they won;t be offended
They can sleep with their eyes open ! So if you approach them thinking they;re awake you might give them a rude wake up call and potentially scare them
Generally used to being transported , handled by different people , kennel staff, vets, track supervision staff
They Power Lean . My DS is a magnet for dogs we used to meet some ex-racers in the park , they wrapped themselves round him and leeeanned in.
They have fragile skin and you;ll need to ask about minor injuries and when they need a vet
Unless she's been in a home , she might not know what a RV or vacuum cleaner is . Your Ring Doorbell might scare her . All new things .
They don;t end up in Rescue because they're old or vicious or a cute puppy comes along . Its either because they;re just not good enough or they;ve raced their guts out and they;re spent . Then discarded . Or worse .
The lucky ones (like your new girl) get a second chance .

They are little divas - be prepared for the “greyhound scream of death” at the slightest inconvenience

First time we heard the GHSOD I thought he must have fallen off sofa in his sleep and broken a leg.

Great hunk was standing there on sofa paralysed with fear, ears back whining "save me, save me, something ate my leg". His paw had gone down between the seat cushions.

😂 I'm just getting over the lurgy and this prompted a coughing fit because of all the laughing!

Worth it, though, for the mental image alone.👍🏻

WhippetOfMassDestruction · 13/01/2023 20:36

Congratulations, OP! She's gorgeous. Well done for taking on a rescue.

I'm a lurcher/whippet owner, but I love all sighthounds. Here's the current one.

Thank you 🙂
I am thinking of keeping her on lead for a very long time. I wouldn’t want to chance it as it’s a dog walkers paradise near us, but I think there are some secure fields where I can let her off for a fee.

I think that's a really good idea. I would just add that I would still make sure you keep up work on her recall tho, because you never know. Our friend only ever walks his lurcher on lead or in his own secure field, and consequently has hardly spent any time training her to come to her own name at all, thinking he doesn't really need to (she does know her name obviously, but her recall is about 50% at best) - it's all very well except they are all escape artists, and a couple of times she has done a disappearing act.....

I have to say, that other than running off and problems with smaller animals, none of the greys I've known have had significant behaviour problems - they are all individuals tho of course, and a lot depends on the kennel experience, what has or hasn't happened to them since, etc etc.

It will be so lovely tho! This thread is really making me want to get a second dog! My husband and I have talked about it, but it's not the right time for us sadly.....

Maxifly · 13/01/2023 20:40

Loving all the photos! Mine is now 8 and a half, had her since she retired from racing at 5 yrs old. Such a diva, but totally loveable. Greets anyone in the house or out on walks by leaning on them. Friendly to other dog breeds, but sometimes ignores certain dogs, too intent on finding the best sniffs. Never had a problem with walking on the lead, recall zero but when I let her run free in a certain safe area she stops and checks I'm still behind her. My girl isn't greedy, doesn't steal food, go on the furniture or even go upstairs, but most do I believe. I could go on about her funny little ways but I'm sure you'll have the most fun with your new friend. Updates please.....

Actually @CarnageAhead Rich Skipworth's dog (may he rest in peace) looks a lot like your lady Grin

melonraspberry · 13/01/2023 21:54

I walk my boy on a long lead these days, always staying very alert, and in residential areas I’m holding it right by the harness as his prey drey is immense and I’m always scanning for cats ! I used to use a muzzle but he didn’t like it so now I just am super careful. He goes out on the long lead in the forest (it’s not too long , 5ft and he’s rarely out that far). I’ve had him 2 years now though so I know him well. He’s absolutely the best dog, I love the bones of that boy.

Room Clearing Farts ?

CarnageAhead · 14/01/2023 07:52

Good morning

Shopping time again today and I’m trying to compile a list.

Please bear with me, I might ask some daft questions: Your advice, as always, is appreciated:

I need:

A bed - advice needed please about type/size.

She is at the smaller end of the greyhound size but will want to stretch out. There are so many different bed sizes.
What type is best? Where did you buy it from? Photos would be very welcome.

House collar - What type of house collar is best?

Fleece blankets x 2 large - one large for car, one for her bed. Will pick up from Home bargains /B&M/TKmaxx later
Grooming mitt/brush
Elevated dog bowls
Poo bags. strong ones.
Teeth stuff / chews - stuff to buy, stuff to avoid?
Worming /flea stuff.
collapsible water bowl for car journeys.

Food - checking with rescue first to find out which type they feed her on, so I can buy some in advance, then see about gradually changing to something else.
How long to change to her new food, and what to? I was thinking a decent kibble and add things like veg, scrambled egg, fish etc. does that sound okay, or raw food?

Please tell me if I have missed anything important.
I am creating a separate list for coats etc 😁

Your girl sounds amazing, she sounds like a model dog!
I can’t wait to see how her personality comes out, she is a little timid still but getting used to us when we visit her at the rescue.
We’re bringing her home on Wednesday but I’m planning to go back on Monday to walk her again, maybe take some measurements for fleeces etc (and take treats of course).

It’s no surprise the majority of the photos are of greyhounds having a snooze or laying down.

When we had ddog we walked with a couple of grey hounds and they really are the laziest dogs.
They love relaxing and having a snooze. One never came walking if it was raining. He refused to leave the house apart from a quickie in the back garden where friend would have to stand by the open door so when he had finished he could run straight in.
The other was an ex racer (not that he actually did any racing) Friend thought that he was a cat in a past life and still thought he was a cat and cats didn’t chase the bunny.

He really loved their cat. He would sit licking the cat and then the cat would lick him.
At no point did this dog realise he was a dog let alone a greyhound.

A double duvet. Not a bad idea actually. I take it you use a duvet cover and wash it if needed?
Sorry for the question, it sounds a great idea.

Oh wow, the cat and the dog licking each other sounds amazing.
We have a few neighbourhood cats that use our garden to get into someone else’s so it’ll be interesting to see what she does.

We use these pop bags and they're really good - I just have them on subscribe and save from Amazon along with dentastix and pedigree food pouches.

With regards to beds, we have three just now (four, if you count the couch!). A big memory foam bed that we got from Costco, a smaller furry bed that he tends to eat on, the couch are all downstairs, and in our spare room upstairs we've got a double duvet that he rumple up to his hearts content and he tends to sleep there at night or during the day while we're working. He occasionally comes up onto our bed at night but not very often. When he does he clearly wants one of both of us to shift off and then leaves himself when that doesn't happen!
