Dogs who love the beach

We have just come back from holiday with our 2 year old cocker spaniel. We went to visit my family who live on the south coast - due to work commitments/covid we have never been to the beach with him.

I honestly think if he could talk, he would tell you he had the best holiday ever! He loved the sand, he ran around like a lunatic on the beach and in and out of the waves. He couldn't understand that he wasn't supposed to drink the sea Confused as he's used to larking around in fresh water rivers but he had such a good time and wore himself out so much, he took himself to bed every single night Grin.

Does anyone else's dog love the beach? I can't wait to go back in the autumn/winter with him now even if it's just for a weekend!

Haha aww, we took our 2yr old Cocker to the beach for the first time this year too! He loved it also! He kept drinking the sea water too, then looked confused and disgusted 😂

He was nervous of the waves, tbf! But loved racing around on the sand, and jumping into rock pools.

He slept SO well also. Clearly knackered!

Glad you had so much fun with yours!

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 07/08/2022 11:17

Yes. Our cocker loves the beach. He digs, he chaces the sand and the shadows of the seagulls. He paddles and swims in the sea. It's absolutely his favourite place to be.

Ooohyeah · 07/08/2022 11:21

Our springer loves the beach, still hasn’t learned to not drink sea water though! She loves digging, running around crazy, playing with other dogs, climbing rocks and running away from waves. The best time of her life! So wonderful to see.

BinMe · 07/08/2022 11:51

Awww how lovely that they all enjoy it so much

Yes he was a bit confused by the sea gulls as they could fly quicker than the ducks he normally sees 😂. Have been training him out of his herd drive since he was a puppy and one day of annoying seagulls and it went out the window!

We saw a goldie bound into the sea like he had never seen the water before and then he went round and round in circles prancing around and his owner had to eventually strip down to his pants and go in to get him out!

Love seeing happy dogs!

We're incredibly lucky to live 5m from the beach. Our pup is on it every morning, and sometimes we go back for a second trip in the evening!

She loves chasing the birds, paddling with my kids, digging in the sand, a cheeky lick of our ice cream. It's also got lots of other friendly dogs who she can say hello to, and, if they're also young and keen, run riot with.

Forgot the obligatory dog on beach photos 😍

My dog lives rives the beach and we live by it, which is lucky. But now we have a hosepipe ban and I can't hose the sand off. PIA

We’re very lucky to live 500m from the beach so most of DDogs walks are there. We don’t have much sand and DDog doesn’t like getting wet so he won’t swim but will paddle a little when it’s very hot. I think he probably just thinks the beach is no big deal because he gets to go there twice a day 😂 This afternoon I’m taking him up a hill and into some woodland for a change of scene and he will be really excited by all the new smells!

@waterlego what a fantastic photo! He looks so happy!

My DH and kids took our pup to a local country park today - first time visiting. Lots of new smells and she was far more interested in it than the beach!

DonttouchthatLarry · 07/08/2022 14:05

Our flatcoated retrievers adore the beach! They love to swim and will head straight through the breakers, not scared at all. They run and run and one loves to dig in the sand. The cocker is only 6 months and a little more wary - he'll paddle but is scared of the waves and runs back onto the beach, but he's happy running around and shaking seaweed to death 😀

Ha @DonttouchthatLarry I note the cocker in front! They look like a proper little gang!

We were staying in a caravan and came back from the beach and I noticed the dog wasn't at my feet and that's where I found him Grin. Other picture is first day when he stuck his snout straight in the sand!

This makes me sad my dog does not love the beach nor the sea. She doesn't do "wet" 🙄

Treecreature · 07/08/2022 16:30

We've only had mastiffs before and they haven't been that bothered by water. We got a keeshond last year and she'd swim to France if you give her a chance, dives straight into whatever water she can find, absolutely loves it.

PoppyBird · 07/08/2022 16:37

First time I took my recently adopted greyhound to the local beach she was not impressed - too busy, lots of crazy wee dogs that she didn't understand. Few months later we went to an isolated beach in Argyll and when I let her off lead she took off like a rocket, the first time I'd seen her run like that. I did get a bit nervous when she was disappearing into the distance but she soon zoomed back. She's not thrilled about the water though.

My two love the beach. We are only a 30 min drive so go a lot. Beach is dog friendly and lovely. Often find the doggy parts of a beach can be a bit shit!

They both go in the sea but can be scared by waves. DH and I get extremely excited when they have a paddle. They also love coastal kayaking with us 😊

mutleyschuckle · 07/08/2022 21:29

We're luckily about a 15 min drive from lots of dog friendly beaches so regularly traipse behind the teenage dirt bag as he gallops along trying to decide if it's worth chasing the geese or not 🙄 aside from a forest it's his best place to be I think!!

Yep lucky enough to live by the beach and mine and my daughters both adore it!

RedBonnet · 19/10/2022 08:38

Taking our 18w springer for his first visit tomorrow. He's still wary of anything new but as I love the beach I want him to love it too. Fingers crossed 🐶 we're about an hour away and he's not good in the car (not sick, wary) but grandkids going too so should help lol

I will report back
