Pup hates getting up in the morning..

Hi All, just to say really that my little dog is exactly one year, so maybe no longer a puppy..I'm just a bit surprised that he absolutely hates getting up in the morning and has generally become so quiet I actually took him to the vet as I thought he might be unwell.
He is a very little Jack Russell, just 4.5kg and super sweet natured, he loves all dogs and people, treats any visitors like his long lost best friend. But...he absolutely hates mornings, he has a little bed in our bedroom and although he loves to be with us it's like trying to get a teenager out of bed! Sometimes not even clanging his breakfast dishes about will tempt him and he just lately decided he doesn't need breakfast so that won't really work going forward.
Is this normal/ usual? My last Jack was up with the birds and ready to go at a moments notice, this little guy would rather take it slow the whole morning..? He also puts himself to bed at 8.30pm some nights, we suddenly realise he is missing and find him upstairs asleep in his bed and that's it until morning. Does anyone else have a dog like this?

My beagle would stay in bed all day if we let him - he's a right lazy bugger Grin

As long as he's eating well and has plenty of energy on walks I wouldn't worry too much.

Tropics4 · 16/03/2022 20:17

Wow, beagles are usually energetic too! Well I guess we both have dogs that are not typical of their breed! 😁

Both of my dogs (chocolate lab and working cocker) dislike mornings. DS was starting work at 6am for a while which meant we were getting up at 5am. Both dogs refused to even lift their heads from the sofa. They only move really after 8am.

He's energetic on his walks but he's really not a morning dog Grin

Vet says he's the picture of health and he gets plenty of exercise which probably helps (I'm a dog walker so he comes to work with me). At weekends he'll happily sleep until 10-11am if we do.

MaddieElla · 16/03/2022 20:40

Yep, dogs are just lazy, despite their breed.

We have the laziest working cocker spaniel ever. Her pedigree is lit up with field trial champions and she is only the champion of sleep.

When the doorbell rings however...🙄

So yes, if he is energetic on walks, responsive to the door and playtime etc, he's fine. Just a lazy shit. Grin

Tropics4 · 16/03/2022 21:03

Thanks all, he does have two walks per day, 45 minutes each or a little under, more at the weekend and the vet said he seemed fine, he certainly looks well.. this is him early mornings...

I have a v lazy dachshund. Kids are up at 7/7.30ish making lots of noise, he'll happily snooze till 8.30.

PrancerandDancer · 16/03/2022 21:22

My 4 month old cocker loves waking me up at 5am so this is giving me hope for the future!!

shouldhestay · 16/03/2022 21:32

My 2 year old poodle is so lazy. She growls at me when I wake her up to go for a walk at 9!

Lou573 · 16/03/2022 21:35

6 month old goldie here who might think about getting up once all the kids are up and making a racket, certainly not before 9 if she has her way!

@Tropics4, our Jack is the same. Daughter takes her out for her first walk at about 7:00, crave her out might be a better description. But she goes straight back to bed, with daughter's partner. She may come to say hello to me about 10:00, but usually doesn't get up until daughter's partner does, about 11:00.

She's always been like this and we've had her since she was old enough to leave her mum.

NorthSouthcatlady · 16/03/2022 21:46

He’s too cute!

YourTruthorMine · 16/03/2022 21:47

DH takes our girl out for a pee at 6am. She promptly trots back to bed and sleeps until lunchtime

MaddieElla · 16/03/2022 21:49

@Tropics4 that is one properly content doggo. Smile

FrangipaniBlue · 16/03/2022 21:49

I have a bull terrier who doesn't fully "come alive" until about 3pm Grin

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 16/03/2022 21:52

Our ddogs sleep from 10 pm til 6am. They sneak on my bed after that and hate getting up!

PieonaBarm · 16/03/2022 21:54

I've got a Border Terrier who cut his breakfast out himself about the same age. You'd need a nuclear bomb to get him up in the morning now, he is NOT a morning fur! But he's fine!!

Dogs are like us, the get bugs and viruses like we do, and have their own little ways like we do. It's what makes them "ours"!

TheFlis12345 · 16/03/2022 21:57

My friend’s border rarely deigns to get up before 11am!!

DogsAndGin · 16/03/2022 22:07

We have a working dog and everyone warned us we’d never tire her out. Well!

She’s the laziest dog, she’ll have a big walk in the morning (most days) and then stays in her bed or on the sofa for the whole entire day! And sleeps all night too! And if it’s raining she is quite happy to not go out at all.

She has stayed in bed from 8pm to 12 noon before - she can’t even be arsed to go out for a wee!

She always wants to play with a human at about 5pm for about 20 mins and then she goes back to sleep again. She just loves to cuddle and always wants to sit on a lap. Which is hard, because she’s a large breed Grin

PieonaBarm · 16/03/2022 22:17

Are you my friend? He won't even look at us before 11am 🤣

I went to work at 7am last Saturday, he opened an eye when I tickled his ear goodbye. I got home at 7pm, he hadn't moved off the sofa where he'd been with DH all day, and certainly hadn't been out for a wee. I had to get the bailiffs in to evict him from the sofa!! Bladder of steel, and stubborn as a mule. Fab little dog!

Tropics4 · 16/03/2022 22:19

Prance, as a pup he too was up early ish, I would wake up to him staring at me waiting for me to twitch! So yes there is hope. .😃

Ok maybe this is happening for my dog too then, he does seem small to get by on one meal a day though..again my last boy ate two meals a day right up to the end..a grand old almost 18 years!

I had a working cocker that was all go when he was out, but happily stayed in bed until 10am if I didn’t get him up.
Hoping my next dog is the same as I hate mornings!
