Pup hates getting up in the morning..

Hi All, just to say really that my little dog is exactly one year, so maybe no longer a puppy..I'm just a bit surprised that he absolutely hates getting up in the morning and has generally become so quiet I actually took him to the vet as I thought he might be unwell.
He is a very little Jack Russell, just 4.5kg and super sweet natured, he loves all dogs and people, treats any visitors like his long lost best friend. But...he absolutely hates mornings, he has a little bed in our bedroom and although he loves to be with us it's like trying to get a teenager out of bed! Sometimes not even clanging his breakfast dishes about will tempt him and he just lately decided he doesn't need breakfast so that won't really work going forward.
Is this normal/ usual? My last Jack was up with the birds and ready to go at a moments notice, this little guy would rather take it slow the whole morning..? He also puts himself to bed at 8.30pm some nights, we suddenly realise he is missing and find him upstairs asleep in his bed and that's it until morning. Does anyone else have a dog like this?
@Tropics4 that is one properly content doggo. Smile
Nothing wakes him once he has properly gone off..I take his collar off, tuck him in and he is just snoring...well he doesn't snore thank goodness but deeply asleep.

Oh wow, I wish! We have an Assie shepherd that goes non-stop from 630 am to 830 or 9:00 pm. We actually have to tell her to stop and lay down.

Saturday she went for two x 5k walks; one with me and the other with my son and his dogs. I was hoping she would nap, but no.

A little laziness once in a while would be nice.

MinglingFlamingo · 16/03/2022 23:08

FlamingoDog loves to sleep in the morning. She basically follows the sun around so she always sleeps in the warmth, bonus points if it's near where the food is. She has it sussed. She spends about 13/24 hours resting according to her PitPat

However she still loves her walks and food and things.

She's almost 5

This is like one of those newborn threads where the mum says "I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the bairn as they are sleeping all day long and only wake once at night" 😭😭.

Mine is up and extremely busy from 645 to 715am without fail. I've had her 6 months and haven't had a single lie in in all that time so I am rabidly jealous of you all!

Allsorts1 · 16/03/2022 23:25

My working cocker, who was up at 5am as a puppy, now sleeps in endlessly and I couldn’t be happier with/more relieved by this arrangement.

LoveFall · 16/03/2022 23:49

A couple days ago I was literally having to drag my rain-averse dog out for his business around 8 am, and a neighbour was trying to coax her bulldog to walk. He was standing stock still refusing.

It was pouring rain. The bulldog had a coat on even.

I asked her if her dog hated rain too. She said no he hates mornings.

BananaPlants · 17/03/2022 01:12

My dog is 3. These days he prefers to stay in bed until around 11am. My bed. Where he gets under the covers and looks put out when DH and I get up. He especially dislikes Mondays.

Motorina · 17/03/2022 06:38

My beagles have firm views on mornings. They will get up for breakfast but, after that, back to bed. Any day that begins before 11am is a bad day and should know better.

Girlintheframe · 17/03/2022 07:08

Our almost 4 year old dog doesn't do mornings either. He will get up for a cuddle and food but then likes to nap for as long as possible

toomuchlaundry · 17/03/2022 07:17

Our dog used to have a crate. When we got up in the morning he would get up to have breakfast then go and nudge the crate door to tell us he needed to go back to bed! So we could give him his bedtime biscuit and then put the cover over the crate (like a budgie) and he would re-emerge a few hours later, to then go and sleep on the sofa!

Foreverlexicon · 17/03/2022 07:26

My Samoyed likes to wake everyone up at around 7.30am. She’ll jump on the bed and lick your face and generally huff and groan until you get up, let her lot and give her breakfast.
Then once she’s successfully woken everyone up, she quickly sneaks back to bed.

Your dog is my spirit animal

I guess I have a dog like this, mornings are best ignored! Bless.

Trust me as a young puppy he was crazy, he was like a tiny tornado...he has just got calmer and calmer...now really laid back, so don't stress, there is still time for change!

I will live in hope. She is bananas and extremely high energy. Attracts epithets like "very lively, isn't she?!" and "I can't imagine she does well in a house all day eh?"" Both true Grin. But it's the weekend and she is going to run and sniff and do lots of training so I get a lie in on Sunday ;)

Sounds like a plan! Wink

My 18-month terrier is horrified when we open her crate door at 7am. She might deign to come out at 7.30 earliest, perform a series of yoga stretches, have a pee outside, and then likes to be lifted onto my bed to snooze for another hour or two

I used to worry about it but she's happy and full of life the rest of the time. I think she's just not a morning dog!

JaimeLannister · 18/03/2022 20:15

OK I clearly need a new dog! Mine gets up at 5.00am.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 18/03/2022 20:21

My poodle is the same. Doesn’t even react when I come downstairs at 6.30am and doesn’t get out of bed until 11ish if left to his own devices.

tizwozliz · 18/03/2022 20:23

Our pup is happy to lie in, but the trade off is she sleeps in our bed!!

isthismylifenow · 18/03/2022 20:25

My Lab only gets up to have his breakfast and then goes back to bed.

I don't think he could ever sleep as late as some of your dogs, as being a Lab, food is priority. Next is sleep.

Whingasaurus · 18/03/2022 21:02

My jrt/chihuahua weighs 4 2k and never gets up before 11am. Plus if we are not in bed by 9pm he gets very grumpy. He mooches about has a walk early afternoon and naps the rest of the day til he does his hour guard duty at the French doors. Your dog needs more sleep than you realise.

You are probably right, he was so hyper as a small puppy that now it seems weird that he likes to sleep in! I literally never had a moment where I could relax, it was like a toddler on steroids but without a nappy..or bladder control, I honestly didn't enjoy it much! Grin

We have a lazy dog too 😂 He's 1, but as long as someone is on the sofa, he can literally sleep all day (on the electric blanket) just changing positions to snuggle up closer to whoever is there. He doesn't even need the toilet and once he is woken up to eat, he can happily go back to snoozing 😴

XelaM · 19/03/2022 00:01

He only wakes up to bark angrily when someone is at the door (he's tiny but thinks he's a big scary guard dog 🤣). The rest of the day he will just "chillax" unless we go out
