Puppy knows names of family members...?!?

I've realised our 5 month old puppy (collie x black lab) knows the names of DS, DD, and DP Shock and can reliably go and find the right one if I tell her to. She can do this in the house, even if they're not on the same floor, and out on walks or in the park.

Clearly she's the cleverest dog in the whole wide world right?

No. She can't be clever until we believe she exists. We don't believe without a photograph...

But yes, she does sound amazing! And you are clearly in love with her!

FernieB · 15/01/2022 20:27

She sounds lovely. As she becomes a teen dog, use this skill to tire her out. Our boy has done this from a similar age (also learnt the names of a couple of (now destroyed) toys). It's a great way to exercise his brain by asking him to find someone.

And I agree with the PP she doesn't exist without a photoGrin

LalaMelyn · 15/01/2022 20:31

She definitely exists. She's next to me on my bed and she just farted 🤢

I always think my ddog is a genius for this 😆 he knows my actual name but also 'mum' he also knows dds name and all the different family members. I realised today he also knows friends names that we see regularly and the names of their pets!!

If I tell him we're going to nanny's house he gets so excited!

My dogs a bona fide genius 🤩

sillyrubberduck · 15/01/2022 20:33

My Springer does ! He knows Mummy and Daddy Smile and name of DS. If we ask him to take ball to Daddy he does exactly that, takes it to DH.

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 15/01/2022 20:33

Nope, don't believe in puppies I can't see, especially ones with allegedly magical skills Wink

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 15/01/2022 20:33

Collies are unbelievably intelligent dogs!

But we do need a photo!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/01/2022 20:35

She a clever girl! Yes she IS! Yes she IS! (Squeaky noise squeaky noise).

Shallwegoforawalk · 15/01/2022 20:36

Mine knows Mum Dad DS's name and other family members names that we see a lot. Friends dogs the same. I thought most dogs would pick this up as they hear us saying it frequently?

RandomMess · 15/01/2022 20:38

Where's the photo???

My dog knows but is too stubborn to do F all #terriers

Kshhuxnxk · 15/01/2022 20:41

It's the collie in her!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 15/01/2022 20:42

Definitely the cleverest dog to ever live. Mine didn't even know his own name at that age, and couldn't find his own tail reliably.

incywincyspiders · 15/01/2022 20:42

My chihuahua does this 🤍☺️

confusednortherner · 15/01/2022 20:43

Our ddog knows all his toys by name too, even now at 10 he likes to show the game off to visitors 😂

Woofwoofbarkbark · 15/01/2022 20:46

My dog can do this and knows what all his toys are called and knows which room is which.
Dogs can learn upto 180 human words apparently! Or is it 80? 🤔

heidbuttsupper · 15/01/2022 20:47

Came here for the photo Grin

Woofwoofbarkbark · 15/01/2022 20:47

Oh yes, and he loves MIL and gets all excited when he hears her on the phone!!
Oh I love dogs 🐕

RonniePickering · 15/01/2022 20:49

Our Collie definitely knew our names! I would say "go and tell XXX" and he would run to them and bark ❤️

Downsize2021 · 15/01/2022 20:52

My collie retriever X is the same! She even knows the completely unrelated nicknames we call each other as well. It's been a blessing and a curse tho because when we say the name of something that's frightened her, like fireworks, she knows what they are and gets frightened when we say it! Agree with pp, it's a great way to brain train to tire her out. You can also use her natural talent to name all her toys and get her to collect specific ones! I had gun dogs all my life but the collie in her is a whole new kettle of fish!

Kleptronic · 15/01/2022 20:52

Yep collies. Mine does this. He can be told to take a named toy to a particular person and he does it gleefully.

LalaMelyn · 15/01/2022 20:52

I'll have to name change now as anyone who is on my FB will recognise her Grin

She is really really clever, it's been a real eye opener. We've had dogs before but compared to this one they were basically waggy fools Grin

What a clever pup you have!

Ours is now a senior but he knows the names of our entire family. Probably 12 or so people. If we tell him someone is coming that he knows he sits by the door waiting to greet them.

He even know our housecleaner's name and greets her enthusiastically every week. So sweet. She speaks to him in Spanish.

LoveFall · 15/01/2022 20:56

She is lovely. What a beautiful glossy black coat.

Yes! She'll be bashing my ankle with her squeaky caterpillar and I can say "oh take it to [DS]" and off she goes to wallop DS's ankle with it instead!
