Puppy knows names of family members...?!?

I've realised our 5 month old puppy (collie x black lab) knows the names of DS, DD, and DP Shock and can reliably go and find the right one if I tell her to. She can do this in the house, even if they're not on the same floor, and out on walks or in the park.

Clearly she's the cleverest dog in the whole wide world right?

Cavaliers are good for being absolutely adorable but also thick as the wall. My Staffy cross was also sweet but dim. In many ways more tractable than my collie cross once actually trained, though.

My little Jack Russell knows this. She'll come and ask to go out and I'll say go ask Dd1 and she duly trots off and asks her instead. She also seems to know what day it is. Normally ANY time she sees anyone put on coat or shoes she turns herself inside out with excitement but on a Tuesday at my parents (she goes there when I'm at work) she doesn't react at all when the shoes go on - it's their shopping day so she knows she's not coming. Same on a Thursday dc have swimming so she stays at home. She doesn't move a muscle when we get ready to go that day.

Oh and she recognises the sound of people she knows cats coming before they've even made it in to our part of the street. Clever pups

I'll admit to being a first time owner but thought all dogs did this as my shih tzu x bichon pup knew names and words for things really quickly. I must have a clever one too Smile

Yup, Cavalaiers aren’t the brightest, but they’re good at giving cuddles. Labs can be clever but there’s a colour hierarchy of intelligence, not much difference between the black and 2 yellows we’ve had but the chocolate wasn’t nearly as clever but by far the most affectionate.

@Datsandcogs

Our experiences with several labs - family and friends

Black - most clever and most easy going of the 3
Yellow - not quite as smart and a bit more hyper but can be well trained for food
Choc - absolutely fucking bonkers total lost cause Grin

Whilst I would agree on the IQ assessments my choccies have never been nuts, just absolute softies. One has left the biggest ever paw prints in my heart and my arms empty, she gave the best cuddles, so laid back, so lovely!

Our Retriever knows all our names too

Our 4 year old schnauzer/poodle cross knows people by name, it's really weird!
