Rescue dog sleeps on hard floor

Localher0 · 01/11/2021 22:48

We've had him for 2 1/2 years now. When we first got him he did not know what a bed was wouldn't sleep on the (lovely) beds I'd bought, he'd only lie on the tiled floor. So I got some carpet off cuts and eventually put a thin pad over. And now he will lie on that in our hallway. But at night he goes to his (luxurious) bed on the landing then, within 5 mins of me going to bed, he's lying on the hard floor outside my room. So I tried moving his bed to that spot but he still lies next to it. Once the lights are out he sneaks into my bedroom and lies on the carpet - so, again, I moved the bed into my room but he still prefers the carpet. What is going on??

He prefers the carpet. If he has options and it’s not causing him any issues (joints maybe?) then don’t worry about it. If he wasn’t happy he would move as he’s shown you he will and does move to be where he wants to be.

Rainbowunicorn76 · 01/11/2021 23:02

What is going on??

He just prefers to sleep on the floor because that's what's familiar to him.
If he's a happy, well cared for dog and has plenty of places to sleep I'd say stop fussing and let him sleep where he chooses. This sounds like a non-issue.

I've had my dog from when she was an eight week old puppy and she's had access to two soft dog beds and two vet bed type beds plus my bed and the sofa all her life.

She will however, occasionally sleep on the hard floor when the weather is warm as she has a thick fluffy coat and doesn't like to be in places that make her too warm.

She starts off the night, usually on my bed but every night at some point she will get off and sleep on the bedroom carpet for a while, I suspect so she can cool down.

Maybe your dog doesn't like to be too warm either.

You sound lovely OP and you've done everything you could to make him as comfortable as possible but he's probably quite happy on the carpet.

If he didn't know what a bed was when you got him the carpet must feel like heaven compared to where he was sleeping before.

@pigsDOfly Our Pomeranian is similar, thick fluffy coat (trimmed in the summer, long in the winter) and he loves sleeping on a wooden floor or a rug. He occasionally on his cushion during the winter, but his "real" bed was a complete waste of money, it must be too warm for him!

StillMedusa · 01/11/2021 23:49

I've had my girl since she was 9 weeks old... bought several expensive dog beds.
She ALWAYS sleeps on the floor (and the stray cat that eventually moved in has her ££ dog bed!)
She just prefers the floor.. preferably the cool wood floor! Quite often with her fuzzy belly against the wall or patio doors!

I really wouldn't worry about it :)

Rhannion · 01/11/2021 23:55

I think he just likes the floor, some dogs just prefer a firmer surface. He might change his mind. The main thing is he is loved and cared for.

maofteens · 01/11/2021 23:56

My dogs can sleep anywhere (bed etc) but often chooses the wooden floor or carpet. If they are the ones making the choice don't worry about it. What you perceive as comfortable may but be the same as what they do.

Returnoftheowl · 02/11/2021 00:33

My 5 month puppy prefers to sleep on our hard floor, completely ignoring his nice bed! I think it's just what he likes as it's nice and cool.

PollyRoullson · 02/11/2021 08:34

Very common - you could try a raised bed with no blankets on. The raised bed will be cooler and he may sleep on it but then again.......

like this but you can get cheaper I would get the mesh not canvas

Tynesider007 · 02/11/2021 09:05

We have 2 dogs, I am sure given the choice they would sleep outside, they have had so much choice of bedding or furniture to choose from over the years but they seem to prefer a cold stone floor at night.

Muttly · 02/11/2021 09:07

My dog mixes and matches sometimes floor sometimes bed. He is a greyhound so neither fur nor fat reserves to soften the experience. All good.

Localher0 · 02/11/2021 13:24

Thanks all! I'll stop over thinking it and just let him do his thing! When Rescue Dog arrived we had Old Dog and OD was verrrrry happy that this new interloper didn't like any of his plush beds and preferred a carpet offcut.
RD also prefers to drink from puddles and plant pots than his bowl and is afraid of his own shadow. It took a few months to introduce him to the delights of a belly rub and that's one new thing he does enjoy 😉

Have a dog like this, not a rescue- pampered from puppy hood - now struggles with arthritis. Loves human beds and sofas, will never use any of the dog beds bought for him over the years, even when he gets stiff and sore from being on the floor.

Daft thing.

NotMyCat · 02/11/2021 13:33

My rescue cat has a million beds and soft furnishings to sleep on, and clean water
What is he currently doing? Sleeping in a hedge in the rain, after drinking out a puddle HmmHmm
He also likes cardboard to sleep on

PrimalLass · 05/11/2021 20:52

Mine is the same. She very begrudgingly gets up on the sofa sometimes.

Ellmau · 05/11/2021 22:57

My DB's pedigree BMD, had from puppyhood, all creature comforts offered, also chose to sleep on the floor, and not even carpet in his case, he preferred the cold tiles.

And another DDog, also pampered in every way, preferred the delicacy of drain water, muddy puddles and rusty manhole covers to fresh bowlfuls.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/11/2021 23:42

My dog prefers the floor, I tried various beds and he always gave me a Hmm look when I encouraged him to use one!!

I got rid of the beds and he sleeps where he likes now!!

The only time a hard floor might be an issue is if he's old or ill as he would be more likely to get pressure damage (this was an issue for a relatives very elderly collie.)

Localher0 · 07/11/2021 22:58

Oh my god - look!!!!! Tonight he's finally giving a piece of vet bed a try. It's been there a week and he's lain next to it but, at last, he's giving it a go!!

Oooooo, border collie 😍 Gorgeous!

Rhannion · 07/11/2021 23:07

Lovely dog

Beamur · 07/11/2021 23:12

My friends Border Collie occasionally comes for a sleepover. He sleeps on the wooden floor next to my bed. Ignores the sofa and the duvets I leave out for him.

Netaporter · 07/11/2021 23:19

I’ve got a Leonberger. I bought all of the gear when he was a puppy - giant specialist crate from the states, huge bed, the lot. He never used any of it. Just the cold tiled floor in the porch… 😂

Igneo · 07/11/2021 23:22

Do you think some dogs prefer rainwater and don’t like the taste of tapwater?
They have such an acute sense of smell.. wonder if that’s why puddles are preferred

OppsUpsSide · 07/11/2021 23:24

My border collie quite likes a hard floor, think it keeps her cooler maybe.

Tal45 · 08/11/2021 10:07

I dog sit and find dogs prefer rainwater and I would guess he likes the tiles because they are cool.
