Can't believe we're in September now, our babies are growing up!

Newbies always welcome especially if they come bearing photos....

I dont know if this helps but riverpup is in crate next to our bed. I figured if we got crate right we could then move it and we need our bed. We cover crate with blanket and she is sleeping much better as are we.
I was adamant no dogs in the bedroom but I am actually ok with it and quite like it.
Worth a try?
@Chocolateandamaretto pubs and pizzles are the way forward. Plus she was exhausted when we got home so got nice chill out afterwards

Worriesandwobbles · 26/09/2020 11:17

So hard to know if you are actually doing the right thing isnt it ?

LBee2020 · 26/09/2020 11:35

@Chocolateandamaretto we use this pen for our lab (I think I recall yours is a lab too). Its a monstrosity but super sturdy and big enough for him as he grows and his crate. I read lots of reviews about labs jumping out or breaking pens but this one has been fab so far: www.onbuy.com/gb/extra-large-8-piece-puppy-dog-run-enclosure-pen-playpen-80x100cm-xl~c10145~p14102340/

desperatehousewife21 · 26/09/2020 13:47

Crate def won’t fit in our bedroom. I think he’s similar in that he sleeps well til 3ish then is a bit on and off from there. He falls asleep about 8pm so that’s prob why!

Yeah I think we’ll have to shut the door of the crate cos otherwise it’ll be no different to what he’s like now.

HeyLala · 26/09/2020 15:19

@Riverhousepuppy
Agree with you on this. I did the same thing. Got Marleypup used to his crate, on the landing outside the bedroom and left door open. Also covered with a thick blanket so he could feel safe.

He is now 6 months old, and last month I moved the crate downstairs but still leaving the doors open. He will happily sleep from 10 until 7am, when I let him out. He never wakes me so I think I might be able to push it out further if I fancied a lie in.

However, not all great. Hit 6 months and recall off the lead has gone completely and had him run away. He's now a very confident puppy so back to lead walking and only off lead if playing with other pups in the park.

Worriesandwobbles · 26/09/2020 15:47

Got puppy a new harness today, he was so much better with it than the collar, took him for a very short trip to the woods so hopefully he will be worn out this afternoon as I have finished my housework and would love to chill out and read a book !!

desperatehousewife21 · 27/09/2020 06:55

So when you move the crate to downstairs they don’t think any different and just sleep as normal. DH said pup just came out the crate last night to try and sleep with him, he put him back in every time so think he’s getting the message and he said he settles in there better.

He’ll have to sleep with the door shut tho soon. Feel like we’re back to night 1!

verygrumpyoldwoman · 27/09/2020 08:08

Any advice? We are trying to get VeryGrumpyPup (10 and a bit weeks) used to the lead and harness. Done a bit of wandering around the house bribed by food OK - but out on the patio or in the garden, he is just bonkers - mad sniffing around / wanting to eat every leaf in sight / pulling / sitting and not moving (usually when he wants to chew a stone). No interest in following me around at all. Is this just because it's all new? I worry about putting him off - and am sure it will pass - but the thoughts of going for a walk seems a very long way off. Still usually end up carrying him out for toilet trips...

Worriesandwobbles · 27/09/2020 09:44

Haven't yet discovered the secret to lead walking sorry. Am hoping its just a practice thing ?

desperatehousewife21 · 27/09/2020 09:56

This puppy seems to have been conditioned to only sleep on DH Hmm he’s clearly tired, but just sits whimpering. Trying to get him to go in his crate, he doesn’t mind the crate it’s not a fear issue.

m0therofdragons · 27/09/2020 10:30

Dragon pup loves cow ears. Best thing ever. We took him to the beach yesterday and nearly took him off the lead but then he was playing with a confident lovely Labrador and I was a bit worried he’d follow her into the sea too deep and I didn’t fancy a cold swim. Off to a castle for a picnic today so that’s on lead.

Still not happy with harness/collars. Collar is too big and harness seems too restrictive over his shoulders despite being adjustable.

desperatehousewife21 · 27/09/2020 14:04

We did some crate training with the leftover chicken from our roast Grin it went well. He def knows what ‘bed’ means!

verygrumpyoldwoman · 27/09/2020 14:12

@desperatehousewife21 - leftover roast chicken also a total bribery winner here - though he is a bit farty today!!

JuiceyBetty · 27/09/2020 16:41

Riverhousepuppy · 27/09/2020 18:07

So sorry to hear that. Big virtual hugs x

BiteyShark · 27/09/2020 18:07

Hope you are ok Juicey

PicklePorkPie · 27/09/2020 21:16

Sorry to hear thatjuicy. I hope things get better for you. Thank you for the thread. Although ive not posted often I've read the thread for reassurance and to see how everyone is getting on.

Picklepup is 15 weeks and doing well. She is sleeping well, about 95 percent house trained and naps in her crate in the day. We can leave her for a good few hours in her crate and she's good in the car. Pup training is helpful and she seems to really want to please us which is adorable. She's friendly with people and other dogs.

However, she still jumps up like a kangaroo, is a little bitey shark when tired and I haven't dared let her off the lead on walks. She dry humps my leg every day and usually about 50m from home after a walk she hurls herself at my leg with her needle teeth!

So, lots to work on......

desperatehousewife21 · 28/09/2020 07:02

DH is struggling, he’s getting no sleep and is getting angry at everything. He tried to sleep next to the crate with the crate door open but pup just wandered out all the time. He’s going to try with the door shut tonight but he’s so fed up with having to sleep downstairs. I don’t want the dog in our bed and I feel if we went down that route just so DH could get some sleep I can’t see how we’d ever then get out of it.
When we shut the crate door at night he whines and whines which isn’t sustainable as it wakes up the whole house/ neighbours Confused

Things are tough atm, he’s seriously doubting his decision to get him.

TriSkiRun99 · 28/09/2020 07:20

No words of advice just a handhold desperatehousewife21 sleep deprevation is truly my horrid - we have been lucky with our pup she sleeps in her crate, we were not luckily with our 1st child tried every baby book trick in the world nothing worked due 4.5yrs... some puppies are just wired differently I guess. I would do whatever you need to survive this phase (sharing shifts on overnight duty? - or go hardcore on the crate training or den in another room which is secure & shut the door) as it will too pass eventually 🤷🏻‍♀️Good luck.

TriSkiRun99 · 28/09/2020 07:27

We’ve had a good weekend with TriPup took her for a windy run on the beach and then breakfast in a cafe we’d not been in before. But she sat nicely by our feet with a continuous amount of tiny sausage bits (From our breakfast) and active training. She doesn’t lie down chilling out as really overstimulated still by the sights and sounds but was engaged with us which I’m hoping means we are going in the right direction. The classic laugh out loud moment though when I was doing leave it /take it training with slivers of sausage in my hand she was doing brilliantly waiting to eat it on my command with great eye contact, then my youngest daughter cuts a big piece of sausage up it shoots off her plate hits the floor and in half a second pup gobbled it up then turned round to look at me as if to say yum let’s continue training mum...Grin I guess we need to keep working on ‘leave it’ command...

TriSkiRun99 · 28/09/2020 07:28

Hope your stay in hospital juicy goes as well it can, take care x

Bunglemom · 28/09/2020 09:35

@JuiceyBetty
Get well soon!

@desperatehousewife21
I feel your pain! try having the inlaws living/moaning at you too
Bunglepup has good nights where only 1 wake up at 4am, think great ive cracked it then he goes back to every 2 hour wake ups!
Tonight im going to put one of my DD massive teddies in with him with my perfume on it and his heat pad too see if that makes a difference.
I feel like there is no let up at the moment (again i am mega stressed with the inlaws living with me so pup is probably picking up on that too!)
I always feel like its one step closer and 20 steps back!

Why cant we drink gin at work?!

verygrumpyoldwoman · 28/09/2020 09:38

@desperatehousewife21 - sympathies re the sleeping thing. We have been lucky... a few evenings of shutting the crate door and me lying on the floor next to it making snoring noises; and in cases where pup wouldn't settle, taking him out for a pee (sometimes repeatedly) seems to have worked in terms of getting him to settle at night. Guess we are very lucky there - @TriSkiRun99 was in a very similar boat with our first child too! (and now far too old and grumpy to be able to deal with sleep deprivation for long!)

pistachioicecream · 28/09/2020 09:41

@JuiceyBetty Really sorry to hear that. Take care. Hope you feel better soon.

Busy weekend so not had time to reply but thank you to everyone who shared where they leave their pups when going out. I think we probably need to rethink where we have her.

Sorry for those of you having sleep problems - it's just the worst. Hope it passes soon.

After my mulling over whether the fussy eating was teeth related last week, 4 of her teeth fell out this weekend! So she was clearly teething. Let's hope the rest of them fall out soon so we can move on from this phase.

That's v funny @TriSkiRun99 Definitely what Pistachiopup would do too!
