Here we go, hero puppy owners.

We've just got back from the vet where I was shocked to discover he now weights 4kg. Little lump! He's 19 weeks old tomorrow. Wonder how big he'll get? On a miniature poodle group I'm in the adults are anywhere between 6-12kg. I hope he's small as easier to carry about!

Did you cook it in the oven?

Fond memories of our rottie pup being fed completely raw and cooking liver cake... 🤢🤫

polkadotpjs · 30/08/2020 07:29

How's the pup gazing?

muckandnettles · 30/08/2020 07:41

Cooked in the oven, 30 mins.

OohMrDarcy · 30/08/2020 08:21

Morning all

Grazing hope pup is feeling much better!

Muck- any chance of the recipe? Would love to make it for Darcypup!

Speaking of the handsome devil... he decided last night he wasn't up for sleeping in his crate, so for the first few hours had me up every hour pretty much! He did however wee in the garden all night... and I got a good chunk from about 2-6 or something like that. As long as I get that decent chunk (and a coffee when I get up!) I can manage ok, hopefully only for a few weeks so far better than the months with DS! 🤣
I'm now sat reading and he is catching up on his missed sleep. DS is watching YouTube and DD is still fast asleep (teenager!) So all is peaceful

BiteyShark · 30/08/2020 08:29

Hoping GrazingPup is feeling better today.

JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 09:48

Juiceypup is officially The Goodest Boy today! He woke at 06:30 as usual and DW took him out for a wee and poo. Then she brought him back into bed with us- this is a gamble- sometimes he'll sleep for an hour, sometimes he'll just jump around til we get up with him. And he slept til 9am!! This has never ever happened before (and I'm sure shall never be repeated Grin) and it feels amazing! Our first lay in, in 13 weeks!

JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 09:49

It feels extra good since I'm back to work next week (school) and DS is back at school so we're about to have very early mornings again.

Worriesandwobbles · 30/08/2020 10:53

I dont want to go back to work !! (School too)

OohMrDarcy · 30/08/2020 11:19

Juicey that sounds amazing! I look forward to the day Darcypup does that!

muckandnettles · 30/08/2020 11:30

@OohMrDarcy this is the recipe I used but there are loads of others out there: www.lianaskitchen.co.uk/liver-cake-for-dogs/

The smell while it cooks isn't too bad, though it drove Mucky crazy. It made enough for a few day's treats and a big box of it to go in the freezer.

Whatiswrongwithmykid · 30/08/2020 11:32

Joining you all as we picked up our mini poodle pup this week. She’s settled in well and sleeps until around 7.30 with only one wake up to wee.
My daughter is having a little bit of an allergic reaction to her though and I’m very snuggly since she arrived 😫

JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 14:33

@Worriesandwobbles

I dont want to go back to work !! (School too)
Me neither Sad for many many reasons but mostly because I've loved being off for nearly six months, and will miss my pup!
JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 14:38

@Whatiswrongwithmykid show us a photo! I’ve got a 5 month old mini poodle. He generally only sleeps too 6ish (Today was exceptional circumstances!!) so I’m envious of your good sleeper!!

GazingAndGrazing · 30/08/2020 14:54

Thanks all, much better today after puppy piriton £240 please!!

They think it was an insect bite from the garden if it wasn’t for the shaking last night I would never have picked it up.

I did the night shift and swapped with DH at 8am and got up at 1!! Well deserved rest and a lazy Sunday for all.

Whatiswrongwithmykid · 30/08/2020 17:37

8 week old poodle. She is a good sleeper, I was expecting several wake up calls so I’m happy with just one. She doesn’t drink though which is worrying me.

Glad to hear pup is better @GazingAndGrazing.

Just wondering what people do with dog toys. I've always left all of OwlPup's out in a basket, except for the hour before bed when I put them away and he has a pizzle or other chew. But this last few days I've been getting more and more fed up of him running into my knees with a toy in his mouth that I'm beginning to think I've got this all wrong and I should only get a toy out when I've the time/inclination to play with him. Also, I've made up some very difficult rules about it being ok to have chews on the sofa but no other toy (because he relaxes with a chew but rolls about like crazy with other toys) but I realize this is a pretty difficult rule for him to grasp... I've just put the toys away and he's settled nicely on the sofa. I've been doing this all wrong for the last 13 weeks, haven't I?!

OwlInAnOakTree · 30/08/2020 17:39

Oh she's a cutie @Whatiswrongwithmykid

OohMrDarcy · 30/08/2020 18:35

Gorgeous whatis, mine is a mini poodle too!

Grazing that's an expensive piriton! Glad pup is better though

Greenmarmalade · 30/08/2020 19:10

Hello, I have a 10 week old lab pup. First dog ever, so reading all the books 😆 biggest struggle is biting, and chasing ankle biting, but she’s getting better (maybe...) and training well. I wish I didn’t have to separate her from the youngest DC but there’s no other option at the moment- I’m looking forward to that changing in the next few months!

@FelicityBennett we have a yellow lab too!

FelicityBennett · 30/08/2020 19:35

How gorgeous greenmaramalade, labs are lovely dogs , when the biting stops!
He’s been less biter today, children are 10 and 12 so good at standing and ignoring at the moment but prob not when he starts biting harder !
Not sure how the night will go, he hasn’t been sleeping in his crate today, been bribing in and feeding but he runs out so might not be a lot of sleep in this household tonight 😂

Riverhousepuppy · 31/08/2020 07:23

Morning pups and puppettes. So riverpup slept through the first night in her crate til 6.30 which was great, was super calm yesterday. This morning she slept through til 4.45am, eek. Then was like a totally different puppy to the calm girl we left downstairs last night. So excited and bouncy and bitey. She was so happy to see us and her tail was going mad. I think I need to stop playing or training with her all the time she is awake cos surely she will expect that?
My questions for the seasoned pupsters on here
What do you do with puppy all day, how much playing and training and how much down time does pup get?
She is very attached to me at the moment which is lovely but does this change with time? Will she bond more with all of us?
Do I stuff her kong full or just round the edges?
We have online puppy class tonight and then actual puppy class tomorrow. She just bites at her lead all the time so not expecting much. I imagine class will be a bit like when both my children are talking at me at the same time and I cant concentrate.

Annasgirl · 31/08/2020 07:37

Hi all, newbie to this zone! Just a quick post as I didn't sleep well last night. Brought home our new puppy - female shih tzu - yesterday. Worried all night that she would die (I think it was the shock of finally getting a dog after years of waiting). Anyway, came into the kitchen and she had survived!!! She had found her way over to the duvet we wrapped her in on the way home.

Looking forward to all your support. I'll post a photo later - first day back at school for my youngest so I'm just off to get him ready.

FelicityBennett · 31/08/2020 08:41

Morning, our pup slept well but is a bitey monster today 😂, door hinges , carpet gripper , not very distractable with his toys!
Not sure re bonding, at moment pup is happy to see all of us. Our last puppy loved us all initially though was more bonded with my husband and me cos the children hid from him !
With kong when he was tiny I just smeared stuff around the outside , as he got better I soaked his kibble and put it inside and he ate his feed that way.
Currently he’s getting play time, mainly us really playing, he’s not really playing by himself . Starting with a few mins of training when he firsts wakes before he’s gets too crazy
Have just carried him outside in my arms to look at the cars but saw a dog crossing the road on a lead. Dog walked past no barking but pup went crazy barking and growling , not sure why
Do you think scared cos I was holding him so he couldn’t get away? Backed off and he calmed eventually, stupidly I had no treats so next time will take treats and try to distract.
His breeder had lots of adult dogs though so isn’t first time saw a dog that wasn’t his mum ?

m0therofdragons · 31/08/2020 10:04

Puppy is great... any tips for training 9-12 year olds? Just totally lost it with them as they are literally untidying as I tidy!

I would be interested in hearing everyone's routines. We are now on week 4 of puppy ownership. He is 13 weeks old now. I wouldn't say it has got particularly easier. Biting still an issue and tugging at clothes. One thing that is concerning is the growling. He particularly growls with my 9 year old. Mainly when she picks him up but often when they are just playing. We have been teaching her to put him down straight away as the growl usually turns to a bark. I have read that this a precursor/warning to a bite? Several other dog owners have said we should be firm with him when he does this and firmly say no and not to put him down as that is what he wants? Other times he is perfectly happy to be picked up. I am trying to discourage the children from picking him up but he is a toy breed so tiny and at the end of the day a puppy so they want to cuddle him!

Suggestions please?
