Does your dog “talk” to you?

Our dog has taken to “talking” to us. If you speak to him, he sort of makes a rumbling growly noise back. It’s very sweet.

He’s a shih Tzu cross and I’ve heard this is common with the breed - anyone else have a dog that talks?

One I look after does. She comes up to me. Stares at me and does this whole howl thing. She is totally telling me something. I answer her back and she snorts and walks off. It’s so funny. Sometimes she waits for me to answer and then starts again

@Boristhecats that’s it! He waits for an answer and then carries on. He’s fond of a snort too.

Our shih-tzu cross speaks. He double barks when he wants something and continues to double bark until you select the correct thing. Then whines a thank you and off he goes. He also understands a lot of words that we didn't specifically train him too. He's the best.

Oh definitely!! Every night when we’re having a cuddle, or in the night when she wants to ‘puppy pile’ with me... I talk and she answers then sometimes she will start the ‘conversation’😄 it’s a mixture of low rumbles, squeaks and little growls, that seem to come right up from her belly, always accompanied by contact, nestling into me or plonking a heavy paw on me.
It’s totally the best sound in the whole world... how lovely to be loved by an animal who can’t actually speak - but does the next best thing she can manage😄
Btw, she’s no ‘puppy’... she’s a 4 yr old German Shepherd!!

My cockapoo (2.5 years) is very verbose. It's generally to do with food.

Our JRT talks to us!
Usually to inform us that she'd quite like to go to bed now, and could we just pull the covers back for her to climb in.
Oh, and if we don't mind, could we go back to petting her now, please and thank you?

Mine doesn’t but my granny had a staffie that sang to us - a rumbly cheerful growl that went on and on - when she wanted food or patting!

Yes! Batdog is very vocal so always has something to say

Our Newfie likes to yell at me when she wants to go outside but I've already got up to open the door for her about 6 times and I've had enough. Bloody Winter.

She'll also let me know if I'm tardy in giving her dinner, though usually that's just a head leaned heavily on my knee. Sometimes, however, she'll yap at me with an exasperated tone.

My old dog used to make grungy noises. It was possible to have full conversations with him but they weren’t very interesting.

My cat always chirrups her thanks when I let her in it out. She also sings love songs but only to DH...apparently I am not worthy of those.

I have a yodelling whippet. Part of me thinks I'm probably missing out by not making her an internet star but she already has a very high opinion of herself. There's a higher pitched 'song' for "wrap me in a blanket you bastard human can't you see it's below 25 degrees" and her more growly song is "servant come to the door I must spread my fabulous emissions amongst the flowers". She also genuinely says 'hello' as witnessed by a few people.

My labradoodle purrs when he’s happy. Usually related to stroking and/or cheese. He understands loads. He was on the sofa today, lolling around when I wanted to go for a walk. So I told him I’d take the cat instead and he leapt up 🤷🏼‍♀️😂.

Yes! And he joins in when I sing

Our wheatie talks. She has quite a range. A regular bark for postman and the like. A funny little throaty growl to say hello. And a very distinctive whoopy noise for conversations

Don't Timin she's quite big headed enough as it is! She goes 'herroooo' when you say hello

I love reading about everyone else's dogs having different barks and definitely speaking, some days I'm sure it's all in my head. I want one that will sing with me now.

My dog does this too! She makes howly wooooooo noises at me and grumbles when I talk to her followed by a high pitch yap.

But her best noises are oddly when I’m on the phone to my Mum. She becomes an incessant chatter box, noises of all different kinds which she likes to combine with dramatic dog roly polys

Yes, my Goldie does a growly type yawn to talk to me. Both my Bernards used to huff & sigh at me as a form of talking. MILs Bernard used to just sit & stare & the nod, bow or raise his head at appropriate moments.

Where have you heard it’s common? Genuinely interested to know as couldn’t find anything online but our shih tzu x makes quite a lot of talking noises!

Don't get me onto the conversation that goes along the lines of "human have a toy... it's a sign of my love... Have it... Take it... NO! Don't take it, but please do... Oh the sadness... I want to give you a toy as a token of my love but I also want to keep the toy"
