Does your dog “talk” to you?

Our dog has taken to “talking” to us. If you speak to him, he sort of makes a rumbling growly noise back. It’s very sweet.

He’s a shih Tzu cross and I’ve heard this is common with the breed - anyone else have a dog that talks?

Ha ha yes ours does that too! Always had to grab a toy as a gift when someone comes home/in to the house and then just parades around with it

My dog asked me if I was interested in atheistic existentialism yesterday.

He’s a little shitzu.

Nanasueathome · 28/11/2019 22:57

Yes, mine does, particularly when I’m asleep and she wants something
My dog can also sing...but only Happy Birthday song
If you sing it to her she throws her head back and howls along with you singing

Another Tzu servant here. Yep we have full on conversations. Normally her telling me where I can go for expecting her to go out for pee in the rain. She doesn't do rain 😂.
Any Tzu owners I thoroughly recommend the OH Shihtzu FB group. It's wonderful! x

my GSDs were chatty...very excited singing when anyone came in and one of them would grumble under his breath if he wanted something and you were not getting what it was he wanted, and he would chunter to himself like a sulky teen if you told him off.

The other one mostly sighed and communicated with his eyebrows or poking you with his head, his speciality was to get his head under your elbow and nudge it up...not so good if you were trying to have a cup of tea

Another one we had for boarding was so chatty when she was eating, she'd take a mouthful wander about the house showing everyone making "loooooooook I have food!!" noises and then repeat until her bowl was empty

Current dog is pretty quiet except when excited and then he makes the MOST enormous growl and yawns it out, sounds like it is coming right from the depth of his little puppy soul and sounds fierce but it really is a happy noise.

Puppykitten aka idiotcat is the chattiest....he prups and chirps and makes a (scaled down to his size) lion grunt, and holds the most amazing conversations if you yow back at him
His sister runs about the house miaowing if she can't find someone and that often sounds like "helllloooooo, hellloooooo" and she won't shut up until the person she is looking for answers, no matter who else is in.

My Labrador has very expressive ears. It is like semaphore and I know exactly what she is saying by how her ears are positioned!

CoolCarrie · 28/11/2019 23:08

Our irish wolfhound howls and sings to us, especially when he wants to go out, “ come on you idiots can’t you see I want to walk, now, now, now, not when you’ve put your shoes on, got your keys and the leads and the po bags, now, now, now please “ He is very vocal and very funny, and he is my hairy baby, even though he is an old boy now.

@Paddingtonthebear D’you know what - I don’t know where I heard it first! I remember a lady saying she has two and they even talk to each other. Maybe it was the breeder - but mines a cross...

Seems to hold true though

What combo of breeds is yours? Mine is shih tzu x poodle

Timinfuckingruislip · 29/11/2019 13:36

Aww that sounds lovely - he’s crossed with a Maltese.

Mine does, it's not a full bark and has other noises too. He also will circle us and lead us to where he wants us to go, sometimes it's important eg nephew had woken up and we hadn't heard him, other times he's wanting to go outside to chase foxes

kelper · 02/12/2019 11:26

When one of my teenagers comes in, if you say to my whippet x "tell him then" she'll start barking at him, and zoom round the sofa!
She will do it to DH sometimes, but for some reason she loves telling the older teenager what she's done all day (Mostly sleep, chase squirrels and bark at next doors cat!)

Our cocker talks all the time, in the most incredibly deep, resonant bass voice, with the occasional Wookie noise thrown in. I keep expecting him to break into 'Old Man River'. He's hilarious. He comes and stands on me and aroooos right in my face when he wants his treat toy re-filled, and he has a right old rant every morning when DS puts his coat on to leave for school.
