What do you do when dDog refuses to go out for last wee?

1 yr old dDog, large cross breed, always goes out for a last wee before bed. Usually about now. Tonight she is refusing and I don’t blame her. Apocalyptic rain and wind - we face directly out to the ocean so it’s biblical as soon as you open the door...

She last went at 6.45pm.

Do I throw a coat on and take her out on a lead down to the beach for a (guaranteed) wee? Or let her sit it out until morning?

She seems to have a bladder of steel and doesn’t always go straight out in the morning when I get her up. She probably could hold on for 12 hrs, but should she?

Our dog doesn’t like using the garden in the rain but he can be persuaded if I put him in one of his coats so I keep one by the back door now especially for rainy days/ nights .

Our dog goes out and turns around and comes back in again. If we say, 'do a wee', he hides around the corner for 10 seconds and then comes in again.

He can hold on for about 12 hours. We go through this little charade every night.

My dog has a bladder of steel too and can easily wait 12 hours so I would risk it esp if she would wake you if she did really need to go out in the night.

I go out the back with ours and shout 'have a wee' 3 out of 4 obey. Ddog 4 hangs on til morning but her last walk is tea time.
*wild beachy conditions here too!!

My dog won’t always do one...... I give him ample chance but won’t force him.
He can always hold on and he sleeps in a crate in my room, so could ask to go out in the night. He never has needed to since a tiny puppy.

DDog went and stood on the deck under the veg trug. I pointed towards her loo corner and she just huffed at me and walked back in Hmm.

I’ll try her again at 10 then pop her to bed. I’m in my pjs and there’s absolutely no way I’m going out in this weather in the pitch dark.

Plus I don’t want her thinking she’ll get a sneaky beach trip of an evening if she refuses her last garden wee of the day. Because she would. One occurrence of anything seems to make a habit with this one!

Put her in the garden, tell her firmly to 'do her business' and shut the (glass) door until she's done something. If she pretends to pee then comes back to the top step, she gets told a sharp no with no eye contact.

She also has a bladder of steel and can hold for 12hrs+ in fireworks season, but is 15 now so now sure how much longer that'll last Confused

I just say ‘do your pee pee’ sternly until she does it - can take a few times in the rain!! Goodness knows what the neighbours think 🙈

They are put outside, the back door is closed and I wander off inside ad go to check on them a few minutes later. They always go off and do their business, even if it's under the bushes in the flower bed opposite the back door....

We have a similar problem, ours is apparently allergic to rain, so when it's chucking it down we boot her out last thing and quite often see a face at the door looking forlorn instead of going off and doing her business. Shes got a bladder like a steel trap too so if she doesn't go, she usually makes it through the night. We're up at 6am with the toddler anyway so she goes out quite early in the morning. (And still tries to come straight back in if it's raining!)

I swear my dog went from about 3.30pm Monday afternoon till 7.30am the next morning. He’s got a bladder of legend (golden retriever). He wasn’t even that desperate to go at 7.30 either, he’d been up an hour and wouldn’t go out, just came and sat with us while we had breakfast with not a care in the world . Confused

Open door, put dog outside, instruct dog to go wee, close door and let dog back in only when we done.

Same here !! DDog takes himself to bed at 8. Pm and will not do a garden visit after that !!!!! 😂

We've one like that. She's a bit of a princess & will often refuse to put her pretty little nose outside if it's raining. Sometimes I can coax her outside but not always. Luckily she has a bladder of steel so will hang on all night if she feels like it.

Jealous of all those who put their dog out and shut the door without them standing belligerently at the door looking in and barking their heads off (looking at you ddog).

Not an option as elderly neighbours on one side have complained to the council on more than one occasion about other dogs barking so I never let ddog do it.

Ours is part retriever @PuppyMonkey, must be a breed trait!

Right, kids all asleep and laundry done, off downstairs to see if she’ll give in. Wish me luck.

Well what do you know. Put on my most school ma’am expression and with a break in the rain squalls, we have a wee Grin

Ddog now in bed with a puzzle ball filled with vintage cheddar as a reward.

If you haven't got an outside garden or patio., for her to go.
Definitely take her out.
Don't want her get a water infection or anything.

My dog is only small so if he is refusing to go out because of the rain I pick him up and dump him on the back lawn. I think he then realises he may as well wee while he's out there!

I also deposit my dog on the lawn. He sometimes stands there like a tin of milk for ages!

Mine does this too but since he normally takes 1 or 2 mins picking the right spot to "go toilet" I know he hasn't done it so we all stand around in the rain until he goes.

Also they both won't go outside if I don't go with them. Sad

Male DDog is the same. If it's raining or even soggy ground he will hold it for eternity rather than to outside. Have had to resort to walking him on lead before when it lashed all day Envy

I've just put my princess of a dog on a lead & taken her into the garden, where she reluctantly did a wee. She was more interested in her bedtime snack & didn't like that it was drizzling outside.

I'm a meanie. Literally manhandle my Dalmatian out the back door Or I get woken at 04.00 with him whining. He's under the impression he'll get hypothermia in anything under 10 degrees c or will drown in light drizzle. He really is a big wuss.
