Do you let your dog on the sofa?

Growing up our dog was allowed on sofa, but we didn’t live in a city. We lived in a new area, with new clean sidewalks, that were not used often and our dog did her business in our garden. I feel like london sidewalks are filthy. And in the park, loads of poo that people don’t pick up 😡 so we always said we would not let the dog on the sofa. But of course the kids let her up and now the dog goes up at night. She obviously doesn’t get she should not do as the kids let her up. So my question is - is this a battle I want to fight? Do I keep insisting no dog on couch? Or do I just give in now? Obviously I love having her on the couch. I just hate thought of whatever she stepped on is also going on the couch. And then if we sit on it in our pjs and get into our beds - yuck! I’m a little ocd with having clean beds, clothes etc.

Bella and Eric both go on the sofas, Bella sleeps on it overnight on a cushion she purloined from dd. Neither are allowed upstairs here but both go upstairs and sleep on the bed at exh's. Dogs seem really quick to grasp different rules at different houses.

I'm with you treacle . My dog stinks and don't want us or visitors to have to sit on smelly sofas. He also snores and fidgets so no way is he coming on my bed.

Dogs really shouldn't stink unless they've rolled in something or they're unwell.

Mine smells a bit when he's damp but otherwise he doesn't smell bad - it's just a bit of a digestive biscuit/hound smell!

I love the smell of my dog, very comforting Blush, kind of like a mousey, gerbilly, straw, popcorn type smell. And her ears..........I wish I could bottle that smell just behind her ears.

missbattenburg · 17/11/2018 11:44

Ah, the smell behind their ears. Smells like everything good and comforting in the world Smile

My dog smells a bit funny as well when she's damp or has just come in from a walk across a field or the park, but that soon goes and then she has a lovely warm dog smell mixed in with a slightly perfumey smell of me, but that's only on her fluffy, silky tummy,

I hate it when she's been to the groomers and she smells of the stuff they use when they comb her - I don't have her bathed - but I've given up asking them not to use it.

Yes, that smell is comforting. Maybe one of the reasons humans started domesticating dogs all those years ago was the lovely warm comforting smell of them.

Must have made them feel very safe in their caves cuddled up to a dog.

Dunelm do some good cheap fleece blankets/throws in plain colours for under £10. Also try Homesense. I got some really nice acrylic throws from there for about £15 each.

All my dogs have always been allowed up until this one. We have a St. Bernard/bernese mountain dog cross so there would be no space for anything else! I also worry about him hurting himself jumping about. He's 19 weeks and has a very snuggly bed which he loves Smile

Nope. 11yo dog here, has never been allowed on furniture and none of my previous dogs have either. I’m glad I didn’t start the habit as she’s now incontinent, so would be just unpleasant all round. She has a very comfy bed that cost almost as much as my second hand sofa, so I don’t feel bad about it! I hate dog hair, so I can’t see me allowing future dogs up either.
