Does your dog sleep on your bed with you?

So I got a puppy at the weekend.
My plan was to have her sleep in my room in her open crate whilst toilet training then when older she could sleep on my bed but it's not working out that way.

Did anyone let their dog sleep in their bed from day 1? From puppyhood?

How did it work out?

Yes I did! Lots of sleepless nights tho! And he slept on pillow beside me so he didn't get squished

First night in crate she just constantly cried and tried to get up on the bed howling. I didn't sleep a wink

Last night she slept on my head and I got a good 6 hours

No although as an adult my dog is allowed to sleep on the spare bed.

Things to consider as a puppy.

How high is the bed? Repeatedly jumping on and off at such a young age won't be great for them.

How do you feel about dirt, the odd accidents etc. I put a blanket on the spare bed and other than the dog no one else sleeps in there which is good as he has a habit of scooting his bottom across the blanket if his anal glands are bothering him . Remember dogs can be pretty gross.

Yes - DDog1 gets under the covers . Ddog2 sleeps near my feet. Not surprisingly, I am single.

yup, but it does tend to interfere with any sex life

She had a crate as a puppy but now sleeps on the bed - sometimes the two cats jump on too

I'm lifting her at the moment but am thinking of getting those dog stairs.

The grossness doesnt bother me. I have children. They are much worse ;)

No, upstairs is dog free in our house!

as a puppy he didn’t we trained him to sleep in his bed at the foot of ours, but once we moved and got a new bed low enough for him to jump up onto we couldn’t really stop him! he’s a dachshund and prefers to spend 99% of his time burrowed under the covers

we did kick him out when dd was in our room and he coped fine but as soon as she went to her own room he slithered back in! he is like a lovely soft bed warmer and draught excluder though so we don’t mind

Yes, at the bottom of the bed.

My dog slept on my pillow from day 1. I bought a waterproof sheet for her to lie on. She had a few accidents but quickly learned to ask to be lifted on the floor to wee on the puppy pad. Now she’s bigger she just sleeps wherever she feels like. Usually on the bed if its cold or stretched out on the floor if it’s hot.

Just be aware that if you allow it now, this will be a permanent thing. My dog still sleeps on DH’s head because she thinks he’s sharing “her” pillow. And before I married him, I dumped people purely because they weren’t happy to have the dog on the pillow.

He always starts the night at the foot of my bed and when dh comes up he skulks off to dds bed and then makes his way back to mine in the early morning hours when he is sure dh is asleep. His favourite spot is between myself and dh face down to the end of the bed but dh only allows this on a rare occasion.

Invest in some fox poo shampoo then as my dog can be rather stinky at times. Even walking him on the street he sometimes tries to smear his neck in something gross and I really wouldn't want to be waking up next to him unless he was bathed more often

Yes one of my dogs sleeps between my pillow and the head board ... and sometimes on my head

Ugh no. When I had a dog she slept in her kennel.

Mine is too noisy and disruptive to share a bed with at night - he doesn't really snore, but breathes loudly, and periodically would jump off to vigorously shake his ears and then demand lifting up again. I have a cuddle with him at night before putting him in his own bed downstairs, then another in the morning... he's still up there now.

Never as a puppy. He came up once for an afternoon nap and I spent an hour scooting round all the time to prevent him rolling off and falling to the floor. I've watched far too much Supervet not to panic at the thought of him falling off a bed.

As an adult he comes up for 5 mins cuddle at bedtime then gets down and sleeps all around the floor (mostly ignoring his £150 Orvis bed!). He then sometimes jumps back up again in the morning, spends 5 mins licking his balls, then gets back down

Our bed is a super king size, 3 pillows wide.

I have the left hand pillow. DH has the right hand pillow. The Labrador has the middle one.

I would love to have ddog sleep in the bed with me. Unfortunately I have to share my bed with dh....

Ddog comes into the bed for an hour every morning after dh has got up (at riduculously early o'clock) to go to work.
She snuggles close and we snooze.

Not as a puppy as I'd be concerned about widdle accidents. But once that was sorted up he came. Mind you now that he's getting on a bit he needs a wee in the night like an old man so we're up and down the stairs at 2am. Friends with crated dogs don't seem to get this problem.

DDog (adult rescue, so no puppy phase) sleeps under the covers too. Preferably snuggled up to my lower legs, although occasionally I am "blessed" by his decision to sleep further up the bed with his arse perilously close to my face.

I, too, am single!

No because she’s too tiny. If she fell off the bed in the night she could break a leg or she could get smothered under the covers. She sleeps in her own bed next to my bed.

Mine sleeps on / in the bed. He’s a whippet so smell, dirt and hair isn’t a problem.

My dog shares my bed, head on the pillow tucked in. She grunts if I climb out of bed for a wee.
Clearly I will remain single.

Sometimes. She's a bit restless, so she mainly sleeps downstairs where her crate and beds are. As a puppy she was crate trained and is happy to sleep downstairs.

Now when I go to bed she comes up with me and curls up on my feet. My husband comes to bed an hour later and normally puts the dog out to wee and then to bed downstairs. Occasionally as a treat she spends the night up with us, usually if we've been out for the evening and she's not had as much human interaction as I would like.

I'd be permanently exhausted if she slept with us all the time. She likes to to laps of the bed 3am. She's short haired and regularly bathed though.
