Do you celebrate your dogs birthday?

One of my boys just had his birthday, he was given 5 new toys, a couple of chew treats and went to his favorite park. Also, his dinner was a roast chicken (with 2 candles for photos). Would've made a doggy cake but he is a fussy eater, so the humans enjoyed normal cake on his behalf. Oh and we also donated to a dog charity in his name. May sound a tiny bit OTT but we love him dearly and he's such a good boy! What do you do?

My kids do, yes. Why not? It's fun and they love him.

Eric's birthday is Christmas Eve he always gets presents wrapped up with a smelly treat in so he knows they are his. I cook him chicken or lamb which is his favourite and I make him a cake with candles and we sing to him and he joins in. We couldn't not celebrate I'd feel awful.

SpanielsAreNuts. Oh no you completely misunderstood me.

Of course I didn't mean that people who celebrate their dog's birthday don't as a rule normally take their dogs out and make a fuss of them, that would be ridiculous. Actually, what I was saying was the complete opposite.

What I meant was that yes, people might take their dog's out and make a fuss of them on their birthdays but surely that's something they do all the time so it's not really anything different from what they would normally do with their dogs.

I certainly wasn't implying that they don't normally do it, as I said that would be ridiculous.

I would, but I've never mastered the arithmetic of Dog Years - my seven times table is pants.

Plus I have three children, who have birthdays with astonishing frequency.... Just about keeping up with them. I wonder if anyone is doing anything to celebrate my birthday - I think it might be on Tuesday.... Or have I missed it again?!

AbsolutelyBeginning · 10/06/2018 09:30

Strictly-speaking, I think dogs should have seven birthdays a year as there are seven dog years to one of ours Grin

Eric is pretty spoilt I have to admit. He's taken the role of the baby of the family Blush So much so if I go on a shopping trip I tell him "Be a good boy mummy bring him a toy" because I love the fact that when I get in he can't decide whether to jump up for a fuss or sit nicely showing me his good boy pose to get the toy Grin

How cute Eric sounds! What kind of dog is he? Mine is a Cairn.

fleshmarketclose · 11/06/2018 06:23

Absolutely He's a poodle/shih tzu cross. Cairn terriers are lovely dogs, well PILs had one, a rescue that was a grumpy git but that was down to the life she had had previously but on a good day she was a treasure.

Yes. They get to go to pets at home and pick out whatever they want then go to the beach.

AbsolutelyBeginning · 11/06/2018 09:31

@fleshmarketclose Thanks - I've looked up your dog - adorable looking dogs. No wonder you want to spoil him Smile
