Do you celebrate your dogs birthday?

One of my boys just had his birthday, he was given 5 new toys, a couple of chew treats and went to his favorite park. Also, his dinner was a roast chicken (with 2 candles for photos). Would've made a doggy cake but he is a fussy eater, so the humans enjoyed normal cake on his behalf. Oh and we also donated to a dog charity in his name. May sound a tiny bit OTT but we love him dearly and he's such a good boy! What do you do?

nope.

it's a dog.

Iwantaunicorn · 07/06/2018 15:15

Of course! Except for this year, I was a bit distracted giving birth 😂 We all have steak, and both dogs get toys (can’t give one without the other) lots of cuddles and their favourite walk. We also celebrate the day we got them.

Love spanielsarenuts way, think when my kids are old enough we’ll do the same - dog 2 and DTs are born on the same day 🙂

MumofBoysx2 · 07/06/2018 16:16

Nothing. It's a dog Hmm
We give ours cake with candles, take her out, make a fuss of her. OK so she doesn't actually know it's her birthday but she knows she's having a nice day, and the kids love to spoil her :-)

pigsDOfly · 07/06/2018 17:34

Don't most people take their dogs out and make a fuss of them on a regular basis?

Don't really know what I could do differently to let my dog know we're having a celebration day. Not sure how impressed she'd be with a cake and candles.

BiteyShark · 07/06/2018 17:48

They have such a short life that it's really for me to celebrate the fact that he's such a joy to have.

Mammysin · 07/06/2018 17:52

Yep. It was her birthday yesterday she got a new harness, lead and toy.

NetballHoop · 07/06/2018 17:54

No. He does get a Christmas stocking though [santa]

GinGeum · 07/06/2018 17:58

DP said I’d be out of the house if he ever came home to anything birthday related for a dog Grin

We don’t celebrate, other than to say happy birthday. But then, the dogs don’t really have toys. Is that weird? There’s normally a ball on the go but it’s never out for them to play with whenever they want. We live on a farm though so they are outside a lot.

Caaarrrl · 07/06/2018 18:03

Of course we celebrate his birthday. He's only 2. This year he got a big bag of balls and some sausages. he also gets a Christmas stocking, as do the cats. It's great watching him rip the wrapping paper to shreds on Christmas morning.

Pebblespony · 07/06/2018 18:06

We don't even know what age our lad is. Never mind his birthday (he's a former inmate of the dog pound). He's spoiled anyway so it's like every day is his birthday.

witchofzog · 07/06/2018 18:10

Mine is a rescue so we celebrate his birthday on his adoptanniversary adoption anniversary. He gets new toys and a special tea. What is wrong with that?

pigsDOfly · 07/06/2018 18:10

If he's come from a bad background Pebblespony he probably does feel every day is his birthday.

hendal · 07/06/2018 19:01

We don’t mark his birthday aside from texting my aunty who shares the date with him, as she found this hilarious (and loves him).
We do mark the anniversary of us adopting him as for me that feels it’s more significant to him (and us). We’ve only had one anniversary so far and I made him a dog friendly carrot cake, which he devoured, and we gave him a new tennis ball.

IslaBoots · 07/06/2018 19:13

I have always marked my dogs birthdays with a new toy. I have always taken them out everyday so nothing new there.

I made one dog a sardine birthday cake once. It stunk the house out! Never again!

A new squeaky ball or interesting toy or tuggy will suffice... Plus a bad rendition of "Happy Birthday" of course 😉

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 07/06/2018 19:20

Awww these are all making me cry! They are so lovely, its a shame others see it aa "just a dog". They are family members.

My and my toy yorkie had the same birthday (NYD). She got spoilt more than me xx

Kleptronic · 07/06/2018 19:27

Here is a cake I made for my dog. It's meatloaf with sweet potato icing. I had to blow the candle out for him.

elisaveta · 07/06/2018 20:26

It's my girls birthday today. We've all sung Happy Birthday. She's had some cocktail sausages and will have a scoop of ice cream later.

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 07/06/2018 20:28

When our ddog was 4 a family ddog had puppies. We just had to keep one what with such a coincidence!!Blush
We sing and they get treats!!

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 07/06/2018 20:48

Tbh, Cocodogs birthday yesterday was more of a reflection on our part of how far she has come in the last two years. DH sang Happy Birthday more times than me or Coco felt necessary, she had her usual two walks, training and play. I had bought her a bubble gun having read how other dogs like to chase the bubbles. Big no from Coco...so we ended up doing a big game of football between the three of us which she absolutely adored and then a cuddle on the sofa, curtains closed to block out the bunnies, otherwise she gets too hyped up!

Honeyroar · 07/06/2018 21:00

No, even though they are very much part of the family. We've too many pets, we'd be at it forever.

spontaneousgiventime · 07/06/2018 23:34

Always. 11 with one and 5 with the other. They have a special dinner, a new toy and a treat. They both get a Christmas stocking too. My DC have grown and left home and I live alone with my babies, so I spoil them, cos I can.

littlemisscomper · 07/06/2018 23:51

If reincarnation is a thing, and I come back as a dog, I hope I don't end up with an 'It's just a dog Confused' owner.

Our collie Skye gets several presents and a walk somewhere special on her birthday. She's a member of the family.

Japanesejazz · 07/06/2018 23:57

Ours get liver on their birthdays.

Ruffian · 08/06/2018 00:02

Yes! I got him a little packet of cocktail sausages and a new squeaky toy which he destroyed in seconds.

He's got his own xmas stocking as well...

phlewf · 08/06/2018 00:13

I can go one better, he gets a party with other dogs, he gets a cake and the other dogs got party bags! Yes I imagine some people can’t see the fun but we’ve all had a shit time of it recently and he can tell so it was a good thing to do.
The cats parties are much more subdued. We put the electric blanket on and they have tuna for tea.
I’m not actually nuts enough to think the animals know.
