How often do you give your dog fresh water?

Because I swear I do it about 20 times a day. Mine will drink any dirty crap outside from muddy puddles, but if it’s been sitting in his bowl for more than about 5 minutes he’ll turn his nose up at it.

Strange beast. Grin

Mine is the opposite. If the water is fresh in his bowl he won't touch it. He likes it to be a bit dirty so he gets it fresh only once a day and even then he will usually hold out until he can find a muddy puddle. He also thinks water out of a watering can is the equivalent to champagne (and no you would never capture me filling a watering can up and slowly pouring it for him to drink in the summer Grin)

nightshade · 19/12/2017 19:15

Twice...morning and night...then he has never been a big drinker....

Although the cat has a tendency to drink it too..

Merrz · 19/12/2017 19:20

Snap, my dog has a water dish beside her food, I change it every day but she hardly ever drinks from it but i have a dish outside which is usually filled with rain water and as soon as she goes outside she drinks out of it as if she's really thirsty and hasn't had water. No idea why!!

snowy1982 · 19/12/2017 19:54

1 completely fresh bowl in the morning and it’s topped up in the evening

Noofly · 19/12/2017 19:58

Oh yes, I forgot about the rainwater that pools on the lid of the plastic box for the recycling bottles. He’ll ask to go outside just to drink from it and then come straight back in. Hmm

My dog is the same, she will occasionally drink from her dish so at least I know she will if she's really thirsty. What breed of dog do you have?

Lloyd45 · 23/12/2017 19:09

My 2 are the same. After 20 mins it's to warm and I have to change it but a dirty puddle is perfect 😊

Praisebe · 23/12/2017 19:13

Mine gets through about 5 bowls a day if you let him. He's been that way since we brought him home but if we let him have too much he does huge massive wees sometimes on the carpet Grin he's not very bright at giving us signals
The cat on the other hand will go for days without touching a drop and then will only drink from a dripping tap nothing else is good enough Hmm
So we have one water addict and one who hates it

Praisebe · 23/12/2017 19:14

Imo dogs vastly prefer rain water whenever they can get it and its better for them if you have a water butt to collect it in

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 23/12/2017 19:14

Another one here that will turn his nose up at the fresh water and instead opt for a mucky puddle outside, if it's got chicken poop in then even better, he'll also go for a potty full of wee if I'm not quick enough, dirty bugger.

Winnerwinneryummydinner · 23/12/2017 19:20

He will drink out of the shower tray when we get out of the shower, jumps up at the sink for us to turn the tap on for him, drinks puddles and rainwater, but hardly EVER out of his water bowl.

Elphame · 23/12/2017 19:23

Favourite water source here is the shower head when he’s getting his paws washed after a walk. Otherwise he doesn’t drink much at all. I replace his water bowl daily but that’s because I think I should rather than because it needs it.

mustbemad17 · 23/12/2017 19:23

Yikes i used to top my dog's up like a gazillion times a day! She was a bit of a diva tho & wouldn't touch unclean water. Give her a rotting carcass in the woods tho & she would go mad. Bleurgh

ShovellerDuck · 23/12/2017 20:53

There’s always a bowl of clean water available and I see my dog drink maybe once in a month. He doesn’t drink when we are out and he’s always with me indoors so is not drinking when I’m not around.
His food is fresh meat, rice and vegetables, no dry food.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 23/12/2017 20:59

Mine will only drink ‘outside’ water unless he’s incredibly thirsty so he will usually ignore his water bowl in the kitchen but ask to go into the garden and drink from his identical bowl out there. He also won’t drink if another dog has been drinking so will never use communal water bowls at cafes etc so in summer I always have to take a water bottle plus collapsible bowl out on walks

StandardPoodle · 24/12/2017 20:11

Water straight of the water butt (tap carefully adjusted by me for the correct pressure of water coming out) is the favourite, followed by the watering can, and as a poor third, the water bowls indoors which are changed morning and night plus whenever they look yucky.
They've got me well-trained.

MardAsSnails · 24/12/2017 20:23

Yeller needs 4 bowls a day, as he slobbers it everywhere. He will only drink from his one bowl though - he ignores the other 4 around the house

fleshmarketclose · 27/12/2017 13:29

Eric's water bowl is topped up regularly throughout the day. He loves it when somebody tops it up with water from a glass they have been drinking from but his favourite is to drink rainwater from the bowl outside the back door.

Devonishome1 · 28/12/2017 19:34

I think dogs can taste the chlorine from tap water. Mine also loves rain water or muddy puddles.

idontlikealdi · 28/12/2017 19:39

I change it about 5 times a day. He never drinks it though. Much prefers a dirty puddle.

BuzzKillington · 28/12/2017 19:40

Every day. He does drink from it but much prefers the pond or a muddy puddle.

VioletCharlotte · 28/12/2017 19:52

Mine rarely drinks tap water, he only drinks from his bowl if it's hot, he's really thirsty and there's nothing else in offer.

He much prefers water from a puddle, tree stump or a pond.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 30/12/2017 11:51

Another one who prefers ditch water to fresh water! So water bowl is only changed once a day

TobleroneBoo · 30/12/2017 11:53

Wondering if it's like cats where they prefer their water to be away from food - we tried the theory and our cats definitely drink more now

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 30/12/2017 11:56

Nope. Dogs water is in the kitchen food is in the corner near the dinner table. My dog is just a mucky bugger
