What on earth is this "spray painted" dog poo about?!?

It all started in one of the woodlands around here. Dog poo that grotty people hadn't picked up, suddenly started being covered in what looked like blue spray paint in a perfect square over and around it. Obviously I thought it was very odd.

Then the local nature reserve started having yellow circles over dog poo left behind. This yellow stains grass areas but doesn't seem to stay on tarmac. So by this point I'm even more wtf

Then on another walk there has now started to be what looks like talcum powder thrown on dog poos left behind.

So does anybody know what on earth this stuff is and why it's being put on?

I've seen it reported in the papers. Its to highlight the fact that some dog owners don't pick up dog mess.

So people do not step in it?

The warden at our local reserve goes round doing this , it's just so people can see how much shit is being left lying around , it' reminds disgusting people who don't pick up to do so as they supposedly feel guilty and apparently it works .

I would guess it's to highlight the fact that irresponsible dog owners haven't picked it up or stick/flick in the case of the woods. It also makes it obvious so people don't step in it.

Why on earth is it goady?

Silver no - I was seriously confused as to why on earth they would start doing it. Its not just on and by paths but in undergrowth and everything. I have never seen it anywhere before, until it started in the woodland last month, then seems to have started happening in all these other areas around here. I didn't think it could actually be spray paint since it's being used in the woodland (currently trying to become an official nature reserve) and in the a place that is officially a nature reserve. I wondered if maybe it was some kind of weird poo dissolving thing or something, or to mark where to pick it up from (a lot of the poo seems to go quite quickly leaving a blue or yellow stains on grass and on the dirt paths and undergrowth. But still, your obviously superior to me and like to let people know it.

To everyone else thank you. I'm surprised it really is spray paint. I really did expect it to be something else considering where it is being used.

Also I can't see the last pigswho leave their dog shit behind in the first place being bothered about the poos being highlighted but looks like it may actually have an impact then.

Also in the woodland their is a high badger and fox population - surely some of what's being sprayed will be their poo? Or am I wrong in assuming their poo will look like dog poo

Are the people who left the poos really going to come by the next day, recognise the poo and go 'Ooh, my poo's been marked, won't do that again!'

I think it's a good idea. If someone else constantly picks up your dog shit you are more inclined to continue to not bother yourself. Dog walkers tend to be pretty routine about their walks. If everyday I saw the dog shit is left behind had been sprayed luminous yellow I think it would guilt me enough to pick it up next time.

Is there a special spray that is biodegradable that I can use in the city? My road is littered with dog shit and we're all sick of it.

Would it guilt you into picking it up though SleepFree? If someone is unpleasant and selfish enough to leave it there in the first place I can't see that a bit of spray paint being put on it is going to make much difference; although, they're saying in the newspaper article that it does work.

The local Councillor claims they're shaming the people who leave it there, but unless they're posting photos of the culprits on lamp posts I can't see how it's shaming anyone.

The warden in our reserve says it does work , but then it slowly tails off again and he has to go round and start spraying for a couple of days . Personally we find that the not picking up increases drastically in any school holidays , and I can only assume that that is because people get their children to do more walking and they don't pick up , or don't watch the dog to see what they are doing .

I've noticed that it gets worse in the winter. Where I live now people seem generally to be quite good about picking up but as the weather gets cooler there is a definite increase in the amount of poo left lying around.

Our community use it. There is indeed a biodegradable spray paint you can use. It does seem to help a bit.

Good, I'm getting some. Sick of the selfish bastards who don't pick up their dogs' shit, in my neighbourhood. And the ones who think 'picking up' is some sort of half-hearted smearing it along the pavement - making it actually worse. Revolting people.

It does work my Mum is the poo spray monitor for her village. When there is an increase in dog poo left behind she carries her can of biodegradable pink spray paint every walk highlighting left poos. It then subsides for a few months. My Dad is the poo bin monitor collecting the full bags and relining the bins and arranging collection.
Tiny village no budget for these things.

I'm amazed it works I've always thought the kind of people who would leave it wouldn't be bothered by it being highlighted (unless the person themselves was being named and shamed).

That point about council bins has reminded me - on the nature reserve they started spray painting yellow, a few days after there was a new bin put in a spot where left dog poo was at its worst. So there probably is an official drive to try and stop it happening I'll be glad if it works, trying to direct two young DC around the mess and keep watch of a young dog has been a PITA.
