I saw a man walking a dog yesterday (sorry no pics) It was massive as big a great Dane and as wide as a St Bernard. Furry but looked like it was all muscle and its had stripes like a tiger. Basically a cross between a Direwolf and a werebear. What on earth was it ?.

Some type of mastiff?

DandelionAndBedrock · 28/07/2017 10:20

Leonberger?

steppemum · 28/07/2017 10:23

I just googled large stripe dog and it gave me a picture of a hyena!

lessworriedaboutthecat · 28/07/2017 10:24

It didn't look like a mastiff or a Leonberger at least from the pictures Dendelion posted. It didn't have floppy ears Leonberger or a long face like a mastiff.

TinyRick · 28/07/2017 10:27

Anything like this?

That's a cuddly looking dog.

TinyRick · 28/07/2017 10:49

According to the text under it from the Google search, it's an English Mastiff apricot brindle.

kreme · 28/07/2017 10:54

Probably a Tibetan Mastiff

lessworriedaboutthecat · 28/07/2017 17:31

I thinks TinyRick's photo is the closest. The main difference is the dog I saw was furry like the Tibetan Mastiff however it had the tiger style marking like the picture of the English Mastiff apricot brindle.
If I see it again I'll ask the owner, he seemed like a nice chap with glasses and get a photo.

If it's anything at all like the two Old English mastiffs that used to come to my training classes, it will be the most adorable cuddle monster in town. Only the most rigid professional discipline prevented me from hugging the older of the two like a giant teddy every time I saw him (he younger was equally adorable but only a puppy albeit one the size of a Shetland pony and I'd have been hauled around the field in excited delight if I'd tried Grin).

Lovely, lovely dogs.

Needsomeflapjacks · 28/07/2017 17:38

Would be guessing ngm (nice glasses man) had a ngw (nice glasses wife) but the dog ate her. . .
Grin

MeanAger · 28/07/2017 17:39

do they eat people ?

Grin

You do occasionally get long haired mastiffs. They're not very common at all and they don't tend to be as profusely coated as something like a TM but might be what you saw. If you do a google image search for "long haired mastiff" there should be a picture fairly near the top of a brindle example.

It could also have been a cross/mongrel of some kind.

Needsomeflapjacks · 28/07/2017 19:56

Long haired variety? Imagine the moulting???
Relatives would be getting hand knitted dog hair Xmas sweaters!

Hmm, I like a substantial dog but our Golden Retriever is my size limit. He's big for the the breed but I imagine he'd look like a Cockapoo next to one of those.

Imagine the slobber!!

BLUEsNewSpringWatch · 29/07/2017 00:12

I just googled mastiff - males weigh 73 - 100kg and are up to 3ft tall Shock that's as big as a mini-shetland pony!!! Wow.

There is often a giant polar bear white mountain dog out walking around here. The owner did tell me what type of mountain dog it was but I can't remember now. 1 of its paws was bigger than my Cavalier's head. The owner was impressed my dog wasn't fazed by the polar bear big mountain dog. Apparently lots of small - medium dogs attack him because they are so frightened of him (luckily his polar bear type fur is thick enough to protect him). Dog was a total lazy, softy, who I desperately wanted to cuddle - it took serious will-power to hold back.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/07/2017 07:24

That would be a Pyrenean mountain dog, Blue.

Whitney168 · 29/07/2017 07:53

I'd guess at an Ovcharka, but I would hope not!
