Boy or girl puppy?

They are 7 weeks old! Any idea how I decide between them? Boy was more boisterous and playful, girl was very sleepy/shy but still happy to be cuddled!

And no, can't have both!

So - pros and cons of boys vs girls welcomed!!!

When I was a dc my gm had a male dog and it always humpedy my dolls! We have got 3 bitches now and no problems.

Better than dogs balls and pink penis hanging around!!

At first I thought the query was boy, girl or puppy!! I think males tend to be more willful than bitches. The advice however tends to be to choose a friendly outgoing dog. The other thing unless your breeding, the bitch will need a bigger operation than the male, and bitches coming into season can be a problem as you need to keep them away from dogs for obvious reasons.

In my opinion my boys have always been easier to handle and live with than the girl.

The bitch has been a thousand times more loyal and protective than any of my boys however she has been much more difficult to train...she is temperamental as fiesty. Not sure if this is typical as she is my first girl as I've had 4 boys in the past.

I think it's a case of tell the boys to do something, ask the girl and hope she agrees to my requests Grin

I have always had bitches and they have all been the perfect dog. DH disagrees and thinks dogs are better but he is very I love with our current bitch so maybe coming round

The more out going male pup would be a better option for a lively household than the very quiet pup.
In fact, I would never choose the quietest pup. My dog has been easier in all ways than my bitch but they are both lovely. With a puppy it is more due to good socialisation and personalities - outgoing/prey drive/ willingness to please etc than sex.

Have they been well socialised? What breed are they? Look like is a young lab in the 2nd pic as well? Good luck with your new baby whatever you decide.

I've had both boys and girls all were loving and kind , go with the one that you like the personality of rather than the sex , presuming it will be neutered there isn't a lot of difference

I got a boy and have had no trouble with anything like him humping and also his wee doesn't make my grass turn brown so added bonus.

blackfell there's something in what you've said in my experience. My boy lab is squishy, lovable, delightful, wants to be cuddled all day, he loves anyone and everyone. My girl lab loves our family but no one else. She doesn't like cuddles much, even from me (she tolerates them) but is always by my side, looking for reassurance but giving it x1000. If my life depended on it she'd protect me, but I think my boy would be scared off.

My personal belief is girl dogs are best. Boys are a bit to opinionated for my liking. I have a lovely male dog but boy is he feisty. I think girls are more accommodating. In a cat however, I go the other way!

I much prefer girls.

They seem more loving, less driven by dominance. More gentle. Of course there are exceptions but my experiences have always been this.

Go for whichever has the most appropriate temperament for your family. The breeder should be able to help you with this. They'll have been with the puppies practically 24/7 since they were born and will be able to give you a much better idea of which pup is the best fit for you than you can get just from a few brief visits.

I don't think there tends to be any kind of reliable difference between the sexes, certainly not enough to warrant making that the basis for deciding which puppy to get.

I've got both dogs and bitches, and know many more, I can't think of any characteristics which are unique to either.

I think we see the qualities in our dogs we wish to see in ourselves

I wanted a boy dog. There was one girl left when we got there. She stared at me and barked the whole time. She is opinionated, hilarious, feisty and determined. And not barky at all on our own though she likes to hrummphh at me and wuff along with my day.

All my best qualities. Grin

It doesn't matter what dog you get, you will ALWAYS think you made the best choice.

They are Maltese...the "mini lab" is actually a blond dachshund puppy - breeder has both!

I have one dd(10) who will die of happiness to get a puppy!

Have they got multiple litters at once? If so I'd be wary, it's something very rarely done by reputable breeders.

Having said that, I would take both of those cuties because I'm an idiot Grin.

I think it's only the 2 litters and I've seen the Kc paperwork - she's actually one of the inspected breeders on the kc website.

I've had both male and females of the same breed and as found the female a bit more aloof but that could be individual personality rather than gender.
Currently have a male and the leg cocking gets annoying but no dealing with seasons

KC paperwork does not mean a responsible breeder. It's just a registration.

To find a GOOD breeder I'd start by saying speaking to the relevant breed club. Different breeds require different health testing etc. The breed club will have yours and any prospective puppy's best interests at heart, and be able to advise

She's on the list of KC assured breeders... I had presumed that would be ok! And I saw the huge stash of Crufts rosettes...suspect puppy farmers don't get those!

Anyway we are getting the boy!!! It's decided! Now I need to work out what I'm going to do about being away on day 5 after we get him - he'll be about 12 weeks then (have to delay due to holiday)....
