Boy or girl puppy?

They are 7 weeks old! Any idea how I decide between them? Boy was more boisterous and playful, girl was very sleepy/shy but still happy to be cuddled!

And no, can't have both!

So - pros and cons of boys vs girls welcomed!!!

Totally agree with DrunkenUnicorn about KC registration and the breed club being the bet place to find a decent breeder.

Even the Assured Breeder Scheme is hugely flawed and is far from a guarantee of a breeder being reputable. It requires only the most basic health testing for some breeds and none at all for others, including the Maltese, plus it makes no requirements of breeders to actually utilise the results of health testing correctly. Taking hip scoring as an example (which is requirement for some breeds) as long as it's been done the breeder is complying with the scheme, even if they're breeding dogs with sky high scores together.

It was a great idea but sadly very badly implemented and it's a shame the KC won't admit its flaws still push it as a guaranteed way to find a reputable breeder.

Ho hum guess I'll have to see what the vet says!

Always gone for girls as less boisterous and no leg love!

This is in no way a dig OP so please don't take it personal it's just my own opinion

But if I saw a breeder had taken part in crufts it would probably make my decision easier - to not buy from them at all!

KC registration means nothing. As for crufts, they're horrid. Google crufts German shepherd - you'll see the well known picture of a gsd with a very sloped back yet it won best looking dog Sad

I have a gsd puppy with no sloped back and it looks 100 times better than the winner of crufts.

People who take part in crufts are all about the money and how the dog looks rather than the health and happiness of the dog.

I've had both boy and girl dogs, gerbils, hamsters, horses, cats.

Boy or girl rarely makes a difference, it's the personality of the individual animal. Especially once they're neutered.

Look at their behaviour and pick based on that rather than sex.

We have a male Maltese. He's 3 years old now, very lively, very funny and a lovely temperament. Know a couple of other Maltese too and they are very sweet too. A great choice for a pet.

We have a boy and he's absolutely perfect - he's very gentle and affectionate. He's playful and loves romping around with his friends he's known from puppyhood but can be a bit nervous of bigger dogs as he's been bowled over several times by out-of-control labs and he's terrified of German shepherds as he was attacked by three different GSDs when he was little (so frankly I don't blame him).

That's rubbish about all breeders at Crufts being in it for the money. Despite my dog's breed being quite rare, puppies usually cost less than 'designer' dogs and the breeders certainly aren't making much of a profit if any - they're doing it because they're all passionate about the breed and as it's a working breed virtually all show dogs are also gundogs or therapy dogs or take part in obedience, agility or working trials.
