TICK removal on dogs ear - best 'home remedy'???

What is best home remedy for tick removal please???

You need to get a tick hook - buy from vets or some outdoor shops have them.

I just pull them out (tissue or gloves) off my cat, like removing a plug. Is it so different with a dog?

Get the little green tool from the vet. I've also followed a you tube video, which showed twizzling them out with your finger.

My grandad has always just pulled them off his dogs, give it a twist and it should come out no problem.

you can leave mouth parts behind & they can cause infection.
Research it carefully.

Soak a cotton wool pad in vodka or gin and soak the bugger a few times then leave overnight, it will be much easier to pull it out. You can use tweezers, but don't twist, and don't squeeze. Make sure it is intact when it comes out or you will need to get to the vet for an antibiotic.

If you have a tube of spot on/ frontline put some directly on to the tick ( use a cotton bud if necessary). Then put the rest of the tube on the back of the dog's neck as usual.

Tick hook or if you can't get one cover the tick in vasaline it will suffer ate the tick and it will fall off. Or cover with tea tree oil .

Tick hook and make sure you grip it properly (use the right sized one) and twist clockwise

I usually get a flea or nit comb and get as close to the skin as I can and get the tick between the prongs of the comb. It works everytime and I do this daily with the dog and occasionally with the kids. The ticks on our farm are massive though and we have no tick hooks available here. A tick hook for future uses but unless you can get one rapidly, the quicker you get the tick of the better.

As Bubble says. Dose dog with tick stuff (Frontline or other) and the tick will fall off within 24 hours.

I can twist them out if they're very small but if it's a medium or big one I won't touch them.

My dad used a soldering iron and heated it. The tick turned white like a yoghurt raisin and fell off a few days later. Dad was an engineer and loved his soldering iron.

smother it in vaseline, it stops the tic from being able to breathe so releases it's grasp so you can grab it with a tissue and flush it.

Cover it in Vaseline for 24 hours. It will suffocate and die (horrid things breathe through the exposed part obviously) then you can pull it out in one piece using a tissue.

DONT put anything on the tick! It makes them regurgitate blood back into the animal and can make them incredibly ill!!!

Vaseline is horrible because it leaves the dog with greasy, dirty fur. The tick hook from the vet costs about £2, or they prob sell it in places like Pets-R-Us. Very effective, quick and neat.

All the tick hook does, though, to be fair, is grab the tick so you can unscrew it.

On this basis, and as I couldn't get a Vet appt until Monday and cant drive atm due to Operation, I used a very hot match end to kill the tick (lit match, blew out, applied to tick, repeated a few times till tick looked rough). It fell off about 30mins later.

Hope that was ok.

Then found some Frontline and put that on dog (not near tick area) too.

Don't use Vaseline, oil, matches, cigerettes, etc. These distress the tick so it regurgitates its stomach contents and infections into the dog/person.

Ticks should be removed with tweezers or a tick hook making sure you grasp the head and remove the mouthparts as you remove the tick.

Oh and regularly check the sight for infection or signs of lyme disease. Hope the frontline works for you, doesn't make diddly squat difference for my dog

I will keep a good 'eye' on the dog over weekend and get Vet to check her over too.
