I couldn't see if it was intact when it came out as it fell off as she was walking along (pulling into the long grass, as per...).

Hold tick body and unwind anticlockwise.
Tick hooks are great ( and what vets use). They allow you to unwind the tick with minimal trauma.
Never pull- you'll leave mouthparts behind.

Smothering the tick in Vaseline/ alcohol etc are old wives tales.

If you haven't got a tick removal tool then use tweezers - blunter edged ones better than tweezerman style.

Once removed I dab some antiseptic on but this isn't really necessary.

If there's redness after some days you should get the dog checked by the vet.

Agitating the tick by burning/smothering/drowning is a great way to encourage it to regurgitate which is the point at which it can transfer Lyme disease.

Tick hooks or blunt tweezers (used in a unscrewing/unwinding motion) are best, anything else risks leaving the head behind.

Frontline takes a good 24-48hrs to kill a tick, better to use a product that actually repels them like Advantix, Seresto collar etc.

If it fell off of it's own accord it has probably all gone - was it quite big? They disengage once they are full of blood < vom>

Gymbob · 08/05/2015 22:03

I laughed out loud at 'repeated a few times until tick looked rough'. laughing more at what a rough tick might look like? ?!! Grin Grin I am on my second glass though Wine

Pull not twist.
If CDC doesn't know what they're talking about then we're all screwed.

piggychops · 08/05/2015 22:31

Twist don't pull. (I'm a vet)
We see loads of cases where owners have pulled and left mouth parts behind. A tick hook removes cleanly.

ragged · 09/05/2015 08:38

how weird there's such different advice!!
Maybe the hook is perfect for twisting in right way and twisting without hook is what usually goes wrong?

That's what this seems to say; it's fine if special hook twists, but if you don't have special hook, then pull without twisting.

LimeJellyHead · 09/05/2015 10:49

Never put a substance on a tick - no vaseline, no alchohol, no heat... nothing. You risk them regurgitating diseases into your dog. Use a tick tool like Tick Twister. The tick hook doesn't grab, squeeze or aggitate the tick. With a turn of the hook he is off.

piggychops · 09/05/2015 17:02

The hooks are cheap to buy too.

LimeJellyHead · 09/05/2015 18:20

Yes. I would get two - one for out and about, say for in the car or dog walking bag and one for at home. That way you always have a hook handy.

iHAVEtogetoutofhere · 11/05/2015 11:13

Righto.
Am off to Vets at teatime for check and to purchase 3 tick hooks (as Lime suggests, plus a spare for the one we will lose by the time we get home!).

When I took the dog to the vet with a tick she couldn't get it out but put on Frontline and charged £42.00.

iHAVEtogetoutofhere · 11/05/2015 21:25

Gah.
Saw Vet, dog checked and fine.
Asked for hooks.
Sailed out without buying.
Back tomorrow.
