Holly the golden retriever, aka 'put the gruffalo down' at the moment as, after 3 years of frustration, she has now decided that son's soft toys are fair game!

Don't have a name for a future dog yet. She was Holly because she was born in December but pre-child, so maybe next one will be a liked but unused kids' name.

ChocolateWindmill · 29/10/2013 23:37

Mine's called Loki, and I really want to get another one and call it Thor, but he'd have to be a Corgi or a Sausage dog or something equally teeny and harmless for hilarity's sake.

clpsmum · 30/10/2013 05:57

We are collecting our two cavalier King Charles spaniels in a couple of weeks. My DC(7) wanted to call them simon and Sharon!! Luckily we managed to talk him out of it! They are now called Gypsy and Scout. Our previous CKC was Milo

3littlewomen · 30/10/2013 06:27

Hilda our elderly boxer and her pal Rosie bear bum, a terrier cross.

EvenBetter · 30/10/2013 14:36

Haha! Some hilarious names here! (Why was Arthur a twat? Why Coleslaw?!)

Nice to see some doggie stories, Trassey is still sorely missed and baby Lacey is asleep on my knee as I type, smelling of that delicious sweaty puppy smell.

Oscar a large tan/ginger and white staffie crossed with something else perhaps a pointer or a boxer and two cats called Cleo and Magpie - black and black and white magpie patterned. I named Magpie but the others came with their names. Oscar is only about 3 was about 18 months when I adopted him but the cats are senior, Cleo was 11 and Magpie 9 when I adopted them about a year apart and they are now 13 and 11. My step daughter calls Oscar Pooch sometimes which he seems to also answer to quite happily!

I lost Joker last May aged 15 who was a black curly coated retriever crossed with something else, perhaps a setter. My Mum named him as his original name was Roker but Joker seemed to suit him better. I adopted him at about 9 months old so we were together a long time.

My previous dog before Joker was my first as an adult and was called Misty. He was a Tan and White Jack Russell/Whippet cross and was adopted at 8 so he came with his name. He had to be pts at age 13 as he had liver disease/failure. He hated other dogs and loved people!

My previous cats have been:

Zeus - Black and White Tuxedo (had from a kitten, I named him)
Harry - Brown splotched tabby (adopted when he was about 18 months old, was a stray so I named him)
Motley - Tortoiseshell and White
Shadow - Tortoiseshell
(They were sisters, adopted as an senior pair aged about 10. They were called Mary Beth and Imogene but I thought they were very odd names for cats so I renamed them. Motley looked like she was wearing a medieval fool's particolour hose and Shadow was very, very shy so she liked to lurk in dark places)

My dogs as a child were:
Rex - large Black and Cream Belgium Shepherd
Lucky - Black and Tan German Shepherd
Sheba - Sable Brown and Black German Shepherd
Zoe - Black and Tan German Shepherd Labrador cross with a trace of collie
Bono - Black and Brown Rottweiler/Retriever cross
Rex came from the RSPCA approx 45 years ago; Lucky and Sheba were from puppies in the '70s; Zoe and Bono were adopted in the '80s and came with their names.

My parents current dog is an adopted neurotic black Lurcher called Marley, he is about 3 and came with the name.

Their previous dogs (between Bono and Marley) were:

Jazz - a Black and White Border Collie, adopted
Cara - a Chocolate Labrador, adopted

Some of them have crossed over with each other, some of them have succeeded their predecessor. All of them have been complete individual characters though!

If I ever have two kittens I want to name them Thing 1 and Thing 2 as I am a huge Dr Seuss fan, I think they would end up being called 1 and 2 though which is a bit 'The Prisoner' Smile

NatashaGurdin · 10/11/2013 23:02

We also had two white albino rabbits when I was a child, named rather unimaginatively Skippy by my Dad (after the bush kangaroo - was a child of the '70s) Smile and Pinky. They hated each other with a passion, Pinky was killed by foxes and think Skippy died or was pts because she was ill. Skippy memorably presented my parents with a large litter of kits the day after she arrived but she killed them all as they were born for some reason and she was never given the chance to do it again!

3littlewomen · 10/11/2013 23:11

Our gorgeous old boxer girl is called Hilda - the name suits her and is often changed to Hilly-Mac-Welly-Butt!
Name picked for next boxer bitch is Vera (though hopefully Hilda will last a few more years).

GiraffesRUs · 11/11/2013 23:14

Great thread, just spent all weekend thinking of a name for our puppy. She's a springerdoodle and we finally decided on Maud, which we think suits her, apart from ds who just keeps asking why.

Mogz · 11/11/2013 23:30

Parent's dog is Lucy, she came to us with the name and it suits her. Although is Step-Dad most likely to be heard calling her Mucky Mutt in a very affectionate tone whilst trying to sneakily feed her sausage rolls and tea Hmm.
Grandad's old dog, god rest her lovely paws, was Topsy.

I've always fancied getting a Shiba Inu called Kitsune. But we're a kitty household at the moment with not enough room for a dog as well.

Huskylover1969 · 15/11/2013 16:10

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 15/11/2013 17:12

We currently have Ollie and Louis. Ollie was named by the children, although he is Lord Ollington, ollieflower, choccy boy and various other names. Louis is lulu and lots of other names. He was named by the breeder when we got him, so we just kept it. Its not a name that I would choose, but he is King Lulu and hes a German Shepherd. Grin

BawbagBiggins · 15/11/2013 17:21

We have a bearded collie/lab called Barkley, she was going to be Dug (scottish) if the kids had had their way) but just didn't suit her.
My friend has a puppy called Dave
