Does anyone else like the smell of their dog?

I don't mean when he's been rolling in something disgusting Grin or has been out in the rain and whiffs of wet dog, I just mean his normal doggy smell. He follows me round all day and I like it when I can smell him, it's cosy and reassuring Blush I'm distinctly odd aren't I? Grin

Is it wrong that my lips start to moisten somewhat when I smell my dog after we've bathed him?

NorkyPies · 21/01/2012 23:28

I love the spicy smell of my ferrets when they are outdoors. In a closed space though it's unpleasant (even to me).

Ginlord · 21/01/2012 23:34

I enjoy the musk

Ephiny · 22/01/2012 07:51

I love Bear Dog's smell, especially his feet (why do they smell of popcorn?) and behind his ears.

Old dog I'm not so sure about, I think maybe just because we haven't had him so long, so his smell doesn't have those familiar comforting 'family' associations, and also he smells a bit of wee sometimes...

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 22/01/2012 08:13

Both my dogs smell different but pleasantly nice.

As puppies the popcorn feet and puppy breath and that smell of 'puppy'
I loved it. Grin
As adults they are clean, groomed and smell like dog, but not stinky dog. I cannot stand the smell of wet dog.

And I hate a dog smell in the house. It is possible to have dogs and a non doggy smelling house. Not always easy, but possible.

multipoodles · 23/01/2012 10:37

Love the smell of my dogs, and often my facebook status will be 'I love the smell of wet poodles' as I know it annoys my non doggie friends! I love the smell of them just bathed too! All my standards have a different smell to the toys but each size has the same smell. I love popcorn paws, but most of all I love puppy breathe that lasts such a short time :(

PandaWatch · 23/01/2012 11:48

I think non-dog owners don't differentiate between doggie smell and stinky doggies. I recognise when my dog is stinkie and make sure I de-stinkify him but when he's just smelling like him (and not all the gross stuff that attaches to him on his walks) I think he smells wonderful and I love burying my nose in his fur while we're having cuddles!

ObviouslyOblivious · 23/01/2012 22:23

I love the smell of ears and paws. Blush

tryingtocookacurry · 28/01/2012 08:54

I love the smell of my dogs paws - they smell like digestive biscuits Blush

iseenodust · 28/01/2012 15:24

Yes and love his smell when (clean) wet too.

Elibean · 28/01/2012 15:32

I actually quite like the smell of (clean) wet dog Blush

Not that I get to smell it often. Mouse loathes water, and is Teflon coated so rarely needs a bath!

feesh · 28/01/2012 15:32

Oh my god am I the only one who doesn't like the smell of my dog?! I tried sniffing her feet earlier - I think it's best kept the other way round to be honest. Jeez louise! She doesn't smell bad.....she just doesn't smell good either!

spiderlight · 28/01/2012 18:53

I love the smells of both of ours. Our springer smells of biscuits and clean feet, and our lurcher has a vaguely wood-smokey smell.

MrsJohnDeere · 28/01/2012 19:03

On the rare occasions that he is clean, yes.

He currently smells of dead rat. Rolled in it days ago (springer) and the smell is lingering despite several baths since.

nooka · 29/01/2012 02:29

I like the smell of my dog (except after the occasions when he has decided to roll in dead fish), but I've never felt the inclination to smell his feet - don't they smell much the same as shoe soles (ie of the road, floor etc). Or his ears for that matter, although he is quite keen on licking our ears...

yellowraincoat · 29/01/2012 02:30

YES I love the smell of my old doggy.

Popbiscuit · 29/01/2012 13:07

Love the smell of our (clean) dog. Is especially nice when she's been asleep in her bed beside ours and she wakes up and stretches and this warm wave of sleepy-doggy smell wafts over. I realize I might be alone in this.

Last year she got sprayed by a skunk in our back yard and it took almost a year for the smell to go away completely so it's really nice to be able to snuffle her fur again without feeling like you're going to vomit Grin

Popbiscuit · 29/01/2012 13:10

nooka -Our old Jack Russell once rolled on a dead fish carcass and it got stuck to her collar and we had to run around after her to try and unhook this giant carp skeleton she was dragging around in panic. She never rolled in fish again!

Phew, I thought I was just weird! I love the smell of my dog, especially the top of his head.

GrimmaTheNome · 02/02/2012 13:58

My dog smells good. Shorthaired dachshunds really are very unsmelly beasts.

MIL said he smelled 'leathery' (in a good way) but I agree with 'biscuity'.

DH says that sniffing your dog is like aromatherapy; but beware, it's addictive.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 02/02/2012 13:58

No. But I love the smell of my cats!

CalamityKate · 02/02/2012 18:29

When she's clean, yes.

Unfortunately, most of the time she smells of something disgusting because she's a roller.

FoonL · 26/04/2017 21:47

It's a bonding thing. The more you take in their scent, the more you bond with them and vice versa. I love my dog's smell.
