A proper funny film (as opposed to the laugh famine that was The Wedding Crashers) if anyone fancies a laugh.

I loved The Wedding Crashers! And LMS.

chocolepew · 11/04/2009 20:55

No! It was not funny.

The final sequence is funny. Very funny in fact.

Otherwise, I felt the same emotion as when I watched Sideways.

Meh.

Wilts · 11/04/2009 20:57

We had to watch it at university recently, it was the first time I has seen it and I thought it was a lovely film

SlartyBartFastlaidanegg · 11/04/2009 23:19

i so enjoyed it

duchesse · 11/04/2009 23:30

Really liked it.

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 09:30

Love this film. It's one I could watch over and over.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 12/04/2009 09:34

the end was good. the rest was crap.

americans are so impressed with themselves when they make a 'dark' film that isn't disney-esque but don't realise that they're just no good at it.

also i though the casting was dreadful. toni colette was good and the girl and the teenage boy. but the guy from the america office was very unbelievable as was the husband.

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 09:40

Sorry disagree with you there. The husband was brilliantly cast.

Such a touching film. I really love the scene when the brother wants Olive out of the competition.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 12/04/2009 09:42

no, you're wrong.

nananannananannannnnaaaaaaaaaanannaican'thearyouanannananannananan!

Hassled · 12/04/2009 09:46

I have to say I love it. All the cast were good - Toni Collete is just wonderful in everything she does. The end scene was the sort you have to watch through your fingers, though.

HelensMelons · 12/04/2009 10:08

I thought it was good as well - dietstarts2morrow I also loved the scene when the brother wants Olive out of the competition - it's hard letting go of our dc's at times.

The husband is brilliant he is also excellent in As Good As it Gets - which is also a film I love.

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 10:19

Also love the scene with the girls on stage in their swimsuits ( were cat-walking, baby). Olive is by far the most beautiful out of all those girls.

Is just sad that those stupid pagents really exsist, and that it was by no means exagerated in the film

BunnyLebowski · 12/04/2009 10:20

Love the "laugh famine" description chocolepew!

I wholeheartedly agree.

Can't believe the generic, unoriginal, piss-poor crap that passes for comedy these days. The Wedding Crashers, Anchorman, Blades of Glory, anything by Judd Apatow - total dross.

Give me Spinal Tap, any Python film, Some like it Hot, Airplane, Dr Strangelove, Young Frankenstein, The Jerk or Coming to America (guilty pleasure) any day!

Oh and LOVE Little Miss Sunshine! Layered, subtle comedy with well developed characters and a real heart to it. Alan Arkin in brilliant in it.

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 10:29

'Layered, subtle comedy with well developed characters and a real heart to it'

That really sums it up for me Bunny. Think I will watch this film again tonight

SlartyBartFastlaidanegg · 12/04/2009 10:31

alan arkin played the granddad didnt he?

he won an oscar.
i love um gregory kinnear - and he was brill in as good as it gets.
toni collette i think is fantastic in all she does.
muriel's wedding anyone?

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 10:33

Toni Collette is amazing, I love her in everything. She was especially good in 6th sense.

SlartyBartFastlaidanegg · 12/04/2009 10:35

i dn't relaly remember her in 6th sense, but she is fab in About a boy.
and i lurve that kinnear,
or did i mention that already

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 10:37

She played the boys mum in 6th Sense.

RaspberryBlower · 12/04/2009 10:38

I like the bit where they all have to run to get in the moving van.

It's clever the way it exposes the innappropriate sexuality of these beauty pageants in such a funny way.

Yes, I love Muriel's Wedding too.

mrsmaidamess · 12/04/2009 10:39

I love 'layered comedy' but you can't go wrong with a step-in-dog-poo-set-fire-to-it-do-a-massive-fart- comedy either.

BunnyLebowski · 12/04/2009 10:40

I forgot to mention Toni Collette

She is bloody AMAZING!

Muriel's Wedding is my all time favourite film!!

Closely followed by Clueless which is on tomorrow night at 19.10pm on Film4 for any other fans!!!

ah you see, if you dn't read/believe the hype thigns are generlaly better

dietstartstomorrow · 12/04/2009 11:03

I don't think it's especially funny either. I hate the way films are labelled as something they are just not.

For instance Slumdog - great film, but so not a feel good film!

LSM is fantastic, but not really a comedy IMO.
