The Mentalist...did anyone watch it?

...and think that it is probably a bit shit?

How come he could deduce every aspect of that woman's psycholgy right down to the colour of her pants but could predict that she would go ballistic and shoot her husband when The Mentalist(pmsl) exposes him as the sex-abusing killer of their daughter?...I mean, it's not exactly professional is it? Oh wait, he's a maverick [yawn], and they don't seem to 'do' disciplinary action stateside...

And later, when we find out that the serial killer offed his own wife and daughter in an horrific bloodbath? And nobody thinks there is a coflict of interest for him to BE ON THE INVESTIGATING TEAM?

Bonkers.

I really wanted to like it aswell - should I give it another go next week? The actor is quite tasty.

Should have previewed, sorry, hope that you can all deduce my general meaning!

I didn't but he looks nice

nickytwotimes · 27/03/2009 11:01

I was tempted to watch it, but refused on the grounds that as the distributors were so dense as to not change the name for the UK market, it was probably shite.

However, if the chap is rather tasty, I might give it a go next week.

Aniyan · 27/03/2009 11:07

I can't get past the name - it makes me think of Alan Partridge and after that all hope of taking it seriously goes out the window

ellceeell · 27/03/2009 11:11

I thought that about the conflict of interest too. And when he went back and slept in the same house with the face still painted on the wall, it made me feel pretty uncomfortable. But he is quite pretty to look at!

mynameis · 27/03/2009 11:12

Yep watched it, wasn't quite sure what to think. He is very tasty though and I am a sucker for all these USA imports.

What is his talent? He pays 'attention' - riiigghht? unlike most mean then

mynameis · 27/03/2009 11:12

MEN not mean - lol

BitOfFun · 27/03/2009 11:19

The Sopranos it aint!

I was kind of hoping for a Ghost Whisperer type of light relief, with male tottie. So it hits that spot I guess, but I think it takes itself a bit seriously.

It's called The Mentalist, ffs. Tbh, I thought it was another take on the idea of Dexter, who, from what I've seen of that, is a bit of a mentalist, too. Can't get past the silly title.

wastingmyeducation · 27/03/2009 13:32

I quite enjoyed it, but I was MNing at the same time.

FairLadyRantALot · 29/03/2009 15:52

I enjoyed it, but possibly mostly because I so could fancy the pants of Simon Baker....man he is gorgeous ...

hippipotamiHasLost14Pounds · 29/03/2009 20:38

I enjoyed it - as long as I did not take the name and plot toooo seriously.
But yes, Simon Baker is swoonsome and I shall definately be watching again [drool]

Lucycat · 29/03/2009 22:28

I assumd he was actually a psychic?

I love this American stuff - my fav is Criminal Minds tho' especially Shemar Moore

FairLadyRantALot · 29/03/2009 22:55

Lucy...but as "he" (I do realise we are talking about the character now, o.k....) points out, there is no such thing as "real psychics"....all "psychics" do is observe verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry well.....

I could never watch Psych, but like the concept, so I'm glad they've done it serious!

FairLadyRantALot · 30/03/2009 09:44

madame...good point...there always seem to be loads of the same kind of series

becstarlitsea · 30/03/2009 09:59

I wanted to like it - that actor is delicious...

But there were holes in the plot you could drive a truck through and his supposedly brilliant deductions were never explained - eg. 'your father was a football coach' 'yes he was, how did you know?' 'it's obvious' - well that was an easy bit of scriptwriting wasn't it, if you don't have to explain how he came to that conclusion!

He solved the case through a mixture of luck, guesswork, coincidence and good looks so far as I could tell.

I also take exception to a child being murdered in a drama where it's only been used to add some drama and emotion to a lacklustre plot - just a throwaway gory event to demand the viewers emotions without going to the trouble of actually creating engaging believable characters. In this case the issue of child sexual abuse and the murder of a small child were both just thrown in because there was no heart to the drama. The writers threw in some stuff that's bound to be emotive without actually committing to either subject or treating them with any integrity. Hmph. (If it seems like I take it personally it's because I receive so many rejection letters for my writing, and then I see pap like this spewed out and know that some writer somewhere has got paid handsomely for dialling this one in.)

In short: twas baloney, and I must try harder not to be bitter! But I might watch it again, only for the tasty actor

JacquelineBouvier · 01/04/2009 20:24

wasn't as good as criminal minds but blimey he's a bit of alright isn't he? is it true he used to be on home and away?

BitOfFunnyBunny · 01/04/2009 20:32

He did used to be on Home And Away, back in the early nineties...he played a slightly creepy teacher who was spinning Roxy lies. The things I remember!

Becstarlitsea- spot on analysis, I completely agree!

bringontherose · 02/04/2009 20:06

I'm sure he has been on Sex and the city too or a film where he was trying to seduce someone who was 'happily' married. Could someone put me out of my misery and let me know what it was. It was on recently. HELP. It has been driving me mad every time I see him or the trailers!

coppertop · 03/04/2009 14:10

Bringontherose - Is it any of these listed here on Wikipedia?

JonesTheSteam · 03/04/2009 15:17

He was in The Devil Wears Prada wasn't he? The one who Andy (Anne Hathaway) had a fling with in Paris?
