Another "do you know the name of..." - scary children's tv show - 80s

Ok. My memory of this tv show is hazy, as it scared the daylights out of me, so I have obviously blanked it from my memory...

It frightened me like The Owl Service and Chocky...

So, the 2 scenes I remember are:

  • a girl is possessed (in some way) by the spirit of another girl who is somehow lost in time... She's been saying the "name" of this girl, but no-one understands, until she happens to be in a greenhouse (or something) and the window is steamed up; she writes the word she's been saying: and it's a girl's name, said/written backwards, which appears as a real name to the children standing outside.
  • the children are in a church, and it's coming up to some critical time when the girl trapped in time is going to be released (?), and a huge bell falls from the tower onto the children - or perhaps just the girl? - and when it is removed, they're/she's gone.

Like I say, my memory of this is really poor, but these two scenes have stuck with me forever.

Help me! I know there must be someone out there who knows what I'm talking about... I need to purge myself of these scary memories!

I think I am just a little bit too old to remember this, though I have some very very vague recollections of (I think) a book along similar lines.

Tinker · 10/02/2009 21:23

How old are you?

Timeslip?

The Owl Service - that brings back memories.

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:23

It might have been a book turned into a series... Like The Owl Service, etc.

God - I'm all freaked out having just written that description!

I need to know what it was called!

Moondial? Were there 2 victorian children and a modern girl?

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:26

I'm 30...

Ooohhh - off to google Timeslip...

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 10/02/2009 21:29

I have Moondial on video and it doesn't sound like a scene from that.

AMumInScotland · 10/02/2009 21:29

I don't know the name but I do remember it... specially the bit about the bell falling down.... sorry, that's not much help is it? I'll think about it....

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:29

No, not Timeslip - though that looks great!

Nor Moondial - but thanks for reminding me of it! That was a super series.

AMumInScotland - I'm so glad you remember too! I sometimes think I made it up!

Tinker · 10/02/2009 21:32

I had nightmares for years about an episode of Timeslip. Slept with the covers over my head. I'm a lot older than you though so prob don't know this.

ContainsWildPerilousLuurve · 10/02/2009 21:33

The name backwards - Karen!

Watcher in the Woods

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:33

Tinker! I know what you mean.

Is children's tv as good as when we were little? [old gimmer emoticon]

Was the bell dropping fast or slow? I remember a strange programme when i was little where the girl was being crushed by a block in a shop (?) and the boy could stop it if he wanted but he was like an impassive Alien.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 10/02/2009 21:35

did it have a character called Araminta 'minty'? no idea where in the reccesses of my mind I'm getting that from but it sounds familiar.

thequietone · 10/02/2009 21:36

it's not the one about the separated twins (boy and girl). Thst culminated in a tower in a lightning storm. Charlie Creed Miles was the boy in that one.

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:36

Yes - Karen - she was going around saying "Narek"...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Contains!!!... But damn you too! That youtube clip is only reminding me HOW FRICKING SCARY IT WAS!

AMumInScotland · 10/02/2009 21:38

"The Watcher in the Woods"! That's the one I was thinking of. And it explains why I waatched it.... David McCallum

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:38

So it was a film? Not a series? Weird how your memory plays tricks on you...

OP posts:
Tinker · 10/02/2009 21:38

It was this episode Look at her face at the end when the longevity drug stopped working.

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:41

I am genuinely scared of opening that link, Tinker. Will I sleep again if I do.

OP posts:
Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:42

I CANNOT believe my parents let me watch that film...

OP posts:
Tinker · 10/02/2009 21:43

It just looks like Joan Rivers without surgery and botox. But, at 8 or 9 it was seriously frightening

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:44

Ok. I'll click then. I can take it...

ContainsWildPerilousLuurve · 10/02/2009 21:45

Minty in Moondial was played by Julia Sawalha.

Penthesileia · 10/02/2009 21:47

Arrgh - nasty! I am would've been frightened too!
