If I love the Wire - what other box sets will I love?

On series 2 of The Wire and sooooo love it. Being super organised have just ordered series 3 and 4 (5 is a bit pricy so will wait...) but thinking ahead - what other gritty police type dramas will I like? Anyone seen the Shield? Any other recommendations....?

Did you catch The Sopranos? (Could do you a deal- I want to try The Wire!)

yama · 25/01/2009 15:17

We're watching the final episode of Series 2 tonight.

I think it's the best tv programme I've ever seen.

I've always avoided the Sopranos because of a scene I once caught.

BIG SOpranos fan here.
I am about to begin The Wire next week, having worked my way through the sopranos through the winter.
They seem to appeal to the same people.

Clayhead · 25/01/2009 16:15

Brotherhood is great but not sure if it's out on DVD yet.

Lucky you with The Wire - series 3 was my favourite.

LyraSilvertongue · 25/01/2009 16:15

I'm on series 1 of The Wire - I didn't know there were so many more series to come.

Clayhead · 25/01/2009 16:17

[Slight Wire hijack]

Series 2 - the docks
Series 3 - politicians arrive
Series 4 - education
Series 5 - media

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 25/01/2009 16:22

Presume you've tried 24?
I also love The Wire (mid series 3 at the mo) but found The Sopranoes too slow to get going.

Love the West Wing tho - that has similiarities to the Wire in all teh characters' machinations.

LyraSilvertongue · 25/01/2009 16:31

I love Spooks - have you tried that?

beanieb · 25/01/2009 16:32

I second the Sopranos, also 'Breakin' Bad'

yama · 25/01/2009 20:38

Is Breaking Bad good BeanieB? I looked it up and it seems a wee bit far fetched and a bit graphic (the body in the bath) but I notice it won two Emmys.

Also, where can you buy it from? I searched for it in Amazon and Generation Kill (suggested earlier) came up - weird.

ScummyMummy · 25/01/2009 20:43

Deadwood is excellent. 6 Feet Under? Neither is police based at all but I loved the Wire and these like these too.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 25/01/2009 21:59

i've just finished series two of The Wire but was quite disappointed with it I have to say, because I thought series one was the best thing I have ever seen. It was still good but I think it was because McNulty came across as really sleazy in it and wasn't in it very much . But, it was nice that Stringer Bell was still in it.

I too have tried to get into the Sopranos but didn't really warm to the characters, I am going to try 24 next but the concept seems a bit weird to me.

We have 2 episodes of series 1 of The Wire to go. I would have sat up and watched it tonight but dh is "emotionally drained" after watching it (wuss).

It is certainly one of the best tv programmes I have ever seen, but I am a HUGE WW fan and I think you'll love it, lula.

alittleteapot · 25/01/2009 22:16

Not police, but The West Wing is my favourite drama EVER just totally fantastic.

yama · 25/01/2009 22:19

Yes, nothing beats The West Wing.

prideandprejudice · 25/01/2009 22:24

We loved the Wire and very lost without it now we have watched every series all the way through. But just started The Shield - same writer as the Wire but earlier - a bit proto-typey but v addictive! Agree re WW and Sopranos too.

MauriceDancer · 25/01/2009 22:32

agree, lulubel, the wire ruins all telly. love the prez. and lester. ooooh, all of them really.

AliandHerScallywag · 25/01/2009 22:32

Watched 3 series of The Wire so far. I found it hard to get into but am hooked now. Part of the problem to begin with was that I was pg and v tired so kept on falling asleep and missing half episodes.

We have also loved the Sopranos. It took a while to get into the language but I think I prefer it to the Wire as there is more family plot and so the characters seem a little
more rounded. However I think the Wire is probably the "cleverer" series IYSWIM.

We also liked 6 Feet Under and Entourage (lightweight but v funny especially in later series). In essence anything from HBO has a good chance of being brilliant.

I was massively disappointed by 24 after all the hype. I thought it was ridiculous. Won't be watching any more of that.

Is the W Wing really good? DH skeptical so he won't buy the box set.

mileniwmffalcon · 25/01/2009 22:33

can some kind person explain the wire to me? west wing was watchable and i love the sopranos, but after hearing lots of very good things about the wire i tried the first couple of episodes and just couldn't get into it at all. i couldn't bring myself to care what was happening. it seemed a bit straight-up cops and robbers. presumably it develops but what into? one thing i love about the sopranos is the lightness of touch and the humour - is there much of that in the wire? from what i've heard of it strikes me as something that might involve rather more effort and concentration than i'm prepared for.

stayfrosty, the EXACT same thing happened to me with deadwood. the wire and deadwood are emphatically NOT programmes that can be watched over the top of a laptop screen.
