I thought it was quite touching. Hard to listen to as Heath Ledger (god rest) spoke in quiet gruf American tone. I like Jake Gyhllenhall since Donnie Darko. Worth watching.

Loved it.

witcheseve · 26/10/2008 01:10

I had someone trying to distract me, but how did Jack die? Was his wifes version correct and the gay bashing was all in Innes's head. Sorry to be a bit thick.

loved that too and it is also responsible for my crush on jg lol

witcheseve · 26/10/2008 01:12

You and me both, but can you answer what actually happened to Jack?

I saw it a couple of years ago.

One of my top 10 films, ever. Brilliant.

ShowOfHands · 26/10/2008 07:23

I think the intimation is that Jack was killed because of his sexuality. Lureen knew this and Ennis knew this but it was left unspoken, hence the tyre story. It's not made explicit but Ennis' childhood memory, his warning to Jack about 'them things I don't know about' and the visualisation all point to Jack's death as murder.

Extremely good film. In my top 5.

ShowOfHands · 26/10/2008 07:23

The book also suggests this.

BBBeeast · 26/10/2008 07:26

i love it - it is one of the only two films where the film is better than the book.

visually stunning and beautifully underplayed.

crankycrane · 26/10/2008 07:27

hi all

looking forward to watching

Beetroot · 26/10/2008 07:43

I watched it last night. I have seen it several times before. It always makes me cry at the end when he goes to his parents' house and goes into his boyhood room, but last night, it hit me even more how sad it is, now that Heath Ledger has died so young. What a terrible terrible thing that was.

shopaholicDIVA · 26/10/2008 13:47

i avoided it for some reason. i have respect for gay people, but watching film is just not right.
looks pretty dull anyway.

darkpunk · 26/10/2008 14:01

loved it.

ShowOfHands · 26/10/2008 14:08

TheHedgeWitch, I will allow for the fact that you didn't particularly enjoy it but pointless? Quite apart from whether a film needs to have a 'point' (not that I understand what this means anyway), I think you could argue that it was a depiction of attitudes and culture over a period of time in small town America? An exploration of prejudice? A coming of age story? A questioning of gender relevance in true love? A romance? A flawed hero? A piece of beautiful cinematography? It's far from pointless.

darkpunk · 26/10/2008 14:11

agree with all that showofhands...it's one of the best films ive seen.

expatinscotland · 26/10/2008 14:12

I can't watch it anymore now Heath's dead.

Just makes me cry.

expatinscotland · 26/10/2008 14:14

i also hope his ex-girlfriend when her case, on behalf of Heath's daughter, against his greedy ass life insurance company. the bastards!

DumbledoresGirl · 26/10/2008 14:15

Snap Expat (though I did watch it).

I am not normally affected by deaths of actors, but his one really touches me.

darkpunk · 26/10/2008 14:19
Sad
expatinscotland · 26/10/2008 14:19

i don't normally get affected by actors' deaths, too.

but him. man, he was so talented.

Tortington · 26/10/2008 14:19

THIS POST HAS A SPOILER DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN

i watched this last week. my friend gave it to me as i mentioned i hadn't seen it.

everyone that i have talked to, every review i have read. even mumsnet, everyone says its the best film ever. The only thing that made that film was becuase he died.

i didn't think it was particularly good at all. i think maybe we as the audience are supposed to be caught up in the "OMG its a film about GAYS and they show them kissing and having sex.

and iwas like.... yeah so what. jeez, was thoroughly utterly dissapointed with this film. i didn't see it as the epic love story everyone said it was - not AT ALL

expatinscotland · 26/10/2008 14:19

OMG, i'm sobbing now at that clip!
