Am I the only person in the world NOT to have Sky Plus?

...everyone I meet says they have it.

And when I say something like: "Oh I missed XXX prog last night." They say: "Why didn't you Sky Plus it?" as if it goes without saying that I must have it.

I've got Freeview box and that's it. Am I the only one?

Of course now you can get... Sky Plus High Definition

expatinscotland · 11/10/2008 18:49

what is high definition?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 11/10/2008 18:50

No, just freeview.

maidamess · 11/10/2008 18:52

High Definition means sharper pictures.

Impressive, I know.

mamalovesmambo · 11/10/2008 18:54

SKY IS A GOD DAMN RIP OFF! When me n DH first met it was 35 pounds a month NOW we pay 47 pounds a month!! I am so pissed off and then they expect existing customers to pay for add ons??!! If we pay for digital TV then why the FUCK should we have to pay a god damn TV licence, for one god damn channel that we never watch or can catch up on programmes on their FREE digital chanel anyway? FFS (sorry but such a fucking bug bear!!) We spend 700 quid a year for Sky and TV licence I cannot justify cinema our nights out. This government does not a give a toss.

maidamess · 11/10/2008 18:55

Umm, get rid of Sky? Just a thought....

scaryteacher · 11/10/2008 18:56

I refused point blank to have Sky when it first appeared back in the 90s, and I still don't have it (live in Belgium, so can't). When I return to the UK, I expect that I will have to have freeview, but wouldn't by choice. I'd rather read a book (apart from anything with D Tennant in it).

I don't have it either. I would like it, but I'm not getting it.

AbbaFan · 11/10/2008 19:02

We don't.

I Hate sky with a passion - they are my most hated company!

Ive used sky+ when babysitting and think it's a bit crap anyway. We have a DVD recorder which is way better.

TheCrackFox · 11/10/2008 19:31

We just have freeview. TBH I could live without TV but not a computer.

lou33 · 11/10/2008 19:32

i dont have it

expatinscotland · 11/10/2008 19:34

they make you sign up for these restrictive contracts and i hate being tied to anything like that.

we don't have contract mobiles for the same reason (they are also a rip off for us).

Liffey · 11/10/2008 19:36

Desperate housewives is back this week and I'm out tuesday (rte) and wednesday C4, and GET this I do not even have a video or a dvd!! I just have a tv! So I'm in a total panic about missing episode ONE! Should I cancel my friends? which ones? Obviously I like them but I love desperate housewives, it's a tough one.
I was thinking though, can I watch the episode of DH that I'm going to miss by going on line to channel4.com/more4 or online or something?? Basically, can you watch it on the computer?

I should change my name to 'TheLuddite'

WideWebWitch · 11/10/2008 19:37

We have Freeview and a fab Humax box which is a one off cost and allows you to record stuff and pause live tv, I love it.

Liffey, DH will be on 4OD or you can download it.

donnie · 11/10/2008 21:16

we don't have it. We hate Rupert Murdoch far too much.

funnypeculiar · 11/10/2008 21:19

We have freeview only. I feel sort of uncomfy with videoing things even - if I'm not in to watch something on the tele, I miss it. Life, miraculously, continues.

PuppyMonkey · 11/10/2008 22:20

So glad to see that sky plus is NOT the default setting for most folk.

I am always way behind everyone else with new tech things. I only got Broadband in Nov/Dec last year. Obviously, the first thing I did was join MN!!

We have a tv with built in freeview. Don't have Sky as I don't want the dish.

Dd is annoyed because she can't see Camp Rock (although it is now out on Dvd)

elkiedee · 11/10/2008 22:51

We have what was Telewest cable, now Virgin media, including a similar device to Sky Plus, it was called TV Drive when we got it but I think Virgin call it something else.

I do find it handy to watch things when it suits me, rather than when they're on - it was particularly useful when ds was newborn and probably will be again when dc2 comes along this winter.

But you can get a lot of BBC and C4 stuff through Iplayer/40D respectively. These things are a luxury not an essential. And as well as video and dvd recorders, there are also now hard drive recorders that you can buy direct rather than buying/renting through a TV company.

pinkteddy · 11/10/2008 22:56

We don't have sky plus. Got hard drive recorder (only cost about 100 quid one off cost) which acts as digi box too. As far as I can make out it does everything sky plus does apart from the extra channels!

stayinbed · 11/10/2008 23:04

we watch babytv on cable, and have to pay for it, on sky its free...
