Janet S-P has just done a peice on smoothies. Did you know that there is more sugar in one portion of smoothie, than in a can of Tango? Also, if you drank one a day for a year, you would put on 13lbs!!

I don't buy them or make them as a rule, but I will think twice, when I do fancy a pick-me-up after a heavy night out!

Did see it - was quite amazed

Really don't like them anyway - bit too thick -gag

girlandboy · 08/07/2008 21:33

Well, I knew they had a lot of sugar in, but I didn't know they had that much. Does it make any difference that they contain natural fruit sugar, as opposed to refined (the Tango sort). Or are they as bad as each other.

chocolatespiders · 08/07/2008 21:33

i ove them as does dd...

butwhybutwhy · 08/07/2008 21:33

I was shocked too.

Like stressteddy, I dont really like them.
Too thick.

posieflump · 08/07/2008 21:34

the Innocent ones are just fruit aren't they?

MaureenMLove · 08/07/2008 21:36

Makes sense, really. Its all natural sugar, but if you make one, you need more than one peice of fruit and you wouldn't sit and eat 4 apples on the trot, would you?

OP posts:
flubdub · 08/07/2008 21:36

its alright if you make them though. fruit and ice.
its the same as eating the fruit

MaureenMLove · 08/07/2008 21:36

It was the Innocent ones!

SoupDragon · 08/07/2008 21:36

FFS! Proper smoothies are made from FRUIT. Of course they have shed loads of sugar in them! natural fruit sugars, not artifical sweeteners or refined sugars like fizzy drinks.

notnowbernard · 08/07/2008 21:38

Smoothies make me a bit vommy

They ALWAYS have banana in them, which I just can't abide

reethi96 · 08/07/2008 21:38

The innocent ones are just fruit. I Make smoothies. This morning I made 4 cups of smoothie from a handful of chopped mango and a banana. That is not going to make anyone put on a stone in a year is it?

JacobsPrincess · 08/07/2008 21:38

Fruit sugar is still sugar. Anything ending in -ose is sugar (sucrose, fructose, lactolose etc).
Eating the fruit whole is much better than having a smoothie because your body has to work to release the energy/sugar from the food. This is also why wholegrain breads/cereals (Low GI) are better than white or processed foods (High GI), you're making your body work for it.

MaureenMLove · 08/07/2008 21:39

But sugar is sugar, however you get it. I'm not saying they should be banned. Its not my thing. I eat everything and anything - in moderation.

OP posts:
wannaBe · 08/07/2008 21:40

but fructose isn't any less bad for your teeth than cane sugar.

Fruit is obv better for you as it contains fibre and vitamins etc, but too much fruit is very very bad for your teeth A because of the acid and B because of the sugar.

SoupDragon · 08/07/2008 21:40

"But sugar is sugar, however you get it"

Er, no it isn't actually. Fruit sugars are fructose and it has a lower GI than refined sugars like sucrose

Still though, it's the fruit from sugar without the fibre from the fruit. And that's not 'natural'.

Just eat the fruit and have a sparkling water... If you don't want to put on weight that is. OR, do whatever you like

bythepowerofgreyskull · 08/07/2008 21:43

It was bad reporting..
totally dreadful
they are not bad for you.
they do have natural sugars in them and like anything
if your body functions on 1300 calories a day then having a smoothy or anything that is more than that you will put on weight over the course of a year.
if however you had one for breakfast as part of your calorie allowance you would NOT put on 13lb in a year.
It made me cross..
there will be people tomorrow who drink a can of lilt or coke instead of a smoothy thinking it is Better for them than the smoothy and that just isn't true!

MaureenMLove · 08/07/2008 21:44

Did you see the F-word, Soupdragon? I was just repeating what they said. They said that sugar is sugar, whether its natural or otherwise. Personally, I would still much rather have a smoothie than a can of fizz. I was just shocked with their comparison.

DKMA · 08/07/2008 21:45

Yep durr!

Not all sugar is the same! As said above, fruit sugar has a much lower glycemic rating and is much better for you than refined sugar.

Very shoddy of the f word not to point this out!

SoupDragon · 08/07/2008 21:45

Interestingly, the Britvic website doesn't include a list of ingredients for Tango. It has both refined sugar and artificial sweeteners in it though.

No, I didn't Maureen. I don't need to to know they're talking b*llocks when they say "sugar is sugar".

There is still fibre in a fruit smoothie but it's been broken down by the blending process. This is why you can only count it as 1 portion of your 5-a-day no matter how many you drink. Which is 1 more than a can of Tango.

SaintGeorge · 08/07/2008 21:47

1 a day and put on a stone?

DKMA · 08/07/2008 21:48

Yep - smoothies do have all the fruit in them - that is why they are thick!

Smoothies are made in blenders - if you were to use a juicer then there would be less fibre in them!

Bloody hell, this is basic stuff here, I can't believe both the f word and some of you lot are so slow
