Janet S-P has just done a peice on smoothies. Did you know that there is more sugar in one portion of smoothie, than in a can of Tango? Also, if you drank one a day for a year, you would put on 13lbs!!

I don't buy them or make them as a rule, but I will think twice, when I do fancy a pick-me-up after a heavy night out!

Dont juice cranberries - unless you put the stopper on the top to stop them acting like red squashy popcorn all over the kitchen walls

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 08/07/2008 22:07

no, I buy cranberry juice, I love it. Yummy drink. Much better than smoothies!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 08/07/2008 22:07

(ivy - like the new Ribena ad!)

Piffle · 08/07/2008 22:08

tango

Fucking useless reporting
tango has saccharin and aspartame in it janet you knob head
course its low sugar....

ivykaty44 · 08/07/2008 22:09

So does the fibre escape or not confused.

ivykaty44 · 08/07/2008 22:11

Like farking cream walls with big red sploshes - everywhere and not much juice in the bottom of the glass for my dd2 with a UTI

"Why on earth should someone reduce their food because they drank a smoothie?" because if you are trying to lose weight then the smoothy contains a signifficant amount of calories too. But people have this misguided view that because it's fruit you can eat/drink as much of it as you want and it won't affect your weight.

cupcakesinthesnow · 08/07/2008 22:13

I make fresh fruit smoothies for my very slender children regularly. It is a brilliant way to get the goodness from many different fruits into one glass full.

Too many smoothies and lack of dental hygiene will also rot your teeth but that doesn not mean that I will be running for the 6 pack of Tango with sweetners anytime soon EVER in fact.

There is so much more to a homemade fresh smoothie than some people seem to realise. Why are somany freaking out at the sudden apparent 'bombshell' that smoothies contain sugar?!?

There is nothing wrong with sugar from fruit - fructose - in moderation. Sugar does not make you fat. Over consumption of calories and lack of exercise makes you fat. Homemade fresh fruit smoothies give children energy and are packed full of vitamins and minerals.

Unless you are going to feed your child smoothies all day while they zone out on the playstaion, a child or anyone for that matter is NOT going to get fat having a smoothie a day!

As long as you brush your teeth and instill good dental hygiene in your child they are not going to have rotting teeth from smooties.

I am appalled and disappointed at The F Word. Tabloid-esque shock horror distort the facts bias reporting at it's worst.

Fibre doesn't escape, but it's not as good for you if it's easily absorbed. I think ...

ivykaty44 · 08/07/2008 22:21

Why would it not be as good for you if it's easy to absorbe? If its easy to absorbe then your body just doens't do as much work? Why would that mean its not as good for you?

Or is that a bit like eating celery?

I think I need to go to bed

Oh FGS

If you drink a smoothie a day you will not put on weight - unless that smoothie takes you over what you need calorie wise for that day - and only then if you do it consistently.

Surely common sense dictates that if one needs to cut calories from one's diet in order to lose weight/stop putting weight on, there are probably things that we all eat daily that are of less nutritinal value than a smoothie. A couple of biscuits, a can of pop or a glass of wine for instance. A glass of smoothie is unlikely to be the most unhealthy thing in most people's diets.

I am watching it now on C4+1

Lauriefairycake · 08/07/2008 22:25

it's not just that it's broken down, it's also that most of the fibre is in the skin

ergo whole apples better for you than peeled apples in a smoothie

(not that everyone peels apples for smoothies but the commercial producers do for smoothies)

Ive just heard the repeat on channel 4+1.
What I heard was the woman saying that there was a lot of fruit in them.
However she was saying this to demonstrate that it is NOT a low calorie drink, and that its much better to EAT the fruit.

I think they could have stuck to how many calories involved, and explain that concentrated fruit drinks are high in calories.

JSP is now saying that if you EAT the piece of fruit, you have the enjoyment of eating it for much longer than the drink lasts, and for much fewer calories than drinking the smoothie.

The nutritionist also stated clearly that you will put on weight if you drink a smoothie a day over your required calorie intake. Which is true.

So I dont' think they are talking TOTAL bollocks, as she just told gordon 'Ive been trying to persuade people to EAT FRESH FRUIT instead of drinking a smoothie a day as part of their one-a-day'

Isn't that quite sensible? If you are watching your weight and want to eat healthily then the fresh fruit is a much better option than the high calorie smoothie?

Lauriefairycake · 08/07/2008 22:32

there are three apples in the Innocent one in the fridge (defo no skin)

yummy

So the difference is the "enjoyment" of how you take the fruit in. Would there be a difference between eating a whole fruit such as an apple and biting into it or cutting the apple up? If you cut the apple up would this alter the digestion of the fruit as it is easier to break down? Or would it stay the same ? Is it only if you blend the fruit it alters?

Sorry to say but this altering the way the food is before putting it the mouth and that then altering the fibre or the bodies ability to get goodness from the fruit is begining to sound rather far fetch.

I cannot see that altering the fruit - chopped or blended changes the goodness to the body - but happy if someone wants to explain how this would happen.

OrmIrian · 09/07/2008 07:57

Yep. Packed with sugar. Got involved with a thread on this issue before and was the target of much outrage that anyone could day bad things about Innocent smoothies .

Give fruit to eat and water to drink. Much better and cheaper. A frozen smoothy is a good dessert IMO, not something to be drunk on a regular basis.

OrmIrian · 09/07/2008 08:01

It might take 5 mins to eat an apple with peel on. It would take seconds to drink the equivalent in a smoothy. So you eat more fruit more quickly. And therefore more sugar.

And if you are drinking commercially available smoothies the simply processing and storing of the product will reduce it's nutritional value. Not to mention that even chilled fruit drinks are subjected to UHT.

Celery · 09/07/2008 08:03

There is much debate amongst the "raw food" community about this. Some people say that the process of blending the fruit heats it up and destroys/alters the enzymes.

nappyaddict · 09/07/2008 08:07

i am on slimming world and you can eat as much whole/chopped fruit as you like but once you start to mash, puree, blend or juice it you have to "syn" it. Juice and smoothies don't fill you up but eating the fruit would. You wouldn't generally eat 3 apples in a rowm but you can easily drink 3 apples in a smoothie and not even feel full up. Also of course, eating the fruit gives you fibre which you don't get from the juice.

ivykaty44 · 09/07/2008 08:15

So it is the speed you ingest the fruit that is the problem, drinking the fruit is quicker ingestion and therefore you get more sugar? How come you get more sugar from the fruit if you drink it.

If I take 5 pieces of fruit and eat them or take five pieces of fruit and make a smoothie - how is that going to alter the sugar content?

I understand vegtables cooked alter the vegtables - but making a smoothie doesnt heat the fruit it blends it how does this destroy/ alter the enzymes and why would this matter?

I thought the goverment was promoting 5 fruits a day - so five fruits on a regular basis is bad due to the sugar content?
