It's so silly but entertaining viewing!

Yes it rather lost its way but was entertaining the lead actor was a bit mesmerising I thought

Sherararara · 15/10/2026 13:34

Bit shit full of plot holes and kept watching to see if anything really happened. Spoiler - it didn’t.

IcedPurple · 15/10/2026 17:05

Finished watching this yesterday. Thought it started out well and was quite intrigued after the first episode. But it went seriously downhill after the 3rd episode. I considered giving up on it but thought 'I'd started so I'd finish'. No spoilers, but it didn't get any better. A shame because I liked the premise and the location. Something of a missed opportunity imo. So hard to find anything decent streaming these days!

I enjoyed it until the last episode which was an anticlimax. Especially liked when it reached peak silliness in episode 5.

Inventorofthetoasterstreudel · 15/10/2026 17:14

I just started this yesterday, only on ep3 and it’s ok. I have found the accents distracting, wasn’t sure what was being aimed for so had to look it up. Makes me feel old to see Josh Hartnett as Charlie Heaton’s dad.

UniquePinkSwan · 15/10/2026 18:27

I stopped after 2 episodes. I was very disappointed in it

connect7 · 15/10/2026 18:31

I quite enjoyed it but I love monsters/deep sea &
Josh Hartnett (swoon!)

PuppyMonkey · 15/10/2026 18:35

I watched up to episode 3 and then thought, “this is a pile of shit” and stopped. Grin

MyThreeWords · 15/10/2026 18:37

I thought it was ok. Daft but engaging plot. I found a lot of the characters quite enjoyable and interesting.

In my ignorance, I didn't know about the largely preserved Irish accent in (parts of?) Newfoundland, so that was a fascinating bonus.

Not sure how much they hammed it up though. I noticed there were lots of references to drinking tea - and Tetley's in particular - as if that was something endearingly Irish.

And was the darts playing of the daughter also being positioned as 'an Irish thing'? The actor seemed genuinely good at darts!

connect7 · 15/10/2026 18:42

The accent is a mix of Irish & the West country I thought?

On the show there is an Irish twang but it’s not proper Irish and some of the words used aren’t.

I laughed at the Tetley thing because I’ve never heard anyone sing Tetley’s praises. I thought it was all Barry’s in Ireland and Yorkshire Gold in England.

I may be completely wrong.

connect7 · 15/10/2026 18:46

I think I read some of the actors are from the area

connect7 · 15/10/2026 18:47

It was the Coronation Street that got me!

PeonyBulb · 15/10/2026 18:49

I enjoyed it for its silly entertainment, scenery and accents.

connect7 · 15/10/2026 18:50

I googled the Tetley tea and it’s a real thing in Newfoundland.

Im Irish so favour Barry’s obviously

MyThreeWords · 15/10/2026 18:55

Not that it matters at all but, I've always thought of Tetley as self-consciously Yorkshire, at least since this ad:

Edited

It’s a Newfoundland accent from Irish settlers hence the twang. I love the accent which is why carried on watching.

connect7 · 15/10/2026 19:00

@PeonyBulbno it’s an amalgamation of accents not just Irish

Josh’s accent has being criticised for sounding too Irish. Charlie Heaton apparently has a good interpretation.

You made the correct decision.

Warmautumnbreeze · 15/10/2026 19:30

One episode left for me and I've enjoyed it so far, though don't really know wtf was going on in episode 5! Love Charlie Heaton, he's a great actor. Loved the accents, having only recently learnt about the Irish influenced accents in newfoundland.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 15/10/2026 19:30

Aww. We watched it as a family over the weekend and it was great. Popcorn 🍿 tv.

Octoberismyfave · 16/10/2026 06:13

I really liked it, absolute twaddle story wise but liked the actors and the locations. Very easy watch overall.

cuttinganotheronion · 16/10/2026 08:08

I agree with all, odd plotline but the scenery of Newfoundland and the accents and small isolated town life was really good. I also went down a huge Google maps rabbit hole by looking up St John’s in NFL and walking along the streets and realising that minus the sea monster, there is a whole community that live right there in a very beautiful isolated part of the world.

Nincompoo · 16/10/2026 08:12

It was very watchable shit!

The accents were fascinating and when I researched my sources (ChatGPT!) said they were quite authentic and stemmed from the places the first settlers came from - Ireland and south western England. Which makes sense.

SmotherhoodandApplePie · 16/10/2026 08:17

I thought it was gloriously daft and eccentric and probably cost about £100 to make.
