Hidden gems on Netflix - any recommendations?

I've been given Netflix as part of a package deal, for 2 years.

Finding it hard to navigate as at best they just give a short sentence as to what a series is about.

So apart from the well known "hits", does anyone have any recommendations. Equally interested in films as series.

I have a bit of a humour bypass, so dont often "get" what others find funny. A bit sad I know.

But like SciFi whether Ann Droid or the Silo, but not if they are horror films masquerading as SciFi.

Often like historical whether Wolf Hall or the cheesy Gilded Age.

Have probably watched too many crime dramas to get really excited, but there must be, well might be, series as good as Happy Valley, Blue Lights. (Not too good on gore and guts.)

And spies and political intrigue can be good.

Also have found some true live stories really intriguing.

So far I have added The Diplomat to my watch list because I have seen others on MN recommend it.

Any others?

Thanks, for anyone who has the time to make suggestions.

Bridgerton is good but Queen Charlotte is better (you can do both).
Remarkably Bright Creatures was much better than I expected
Ozark
Black Mirror is good but may take a few goes to get your head round.
Stranger things
Department Q
My Brilliant Career
The Gentlemen
Killing Eve

Sometimes Netflix do good real life documentaries. Try 'should I marry a murderer' and 'Tinder Swindler'

For something both true (docu-series) and crime involved, but not at all the typical police / crime / whodunnit I highly recommend Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi
It just gets more and more jaw-dropping.

And maybe Netflix France or Netflix Azerbaijan or… The presumption unless rated otherwise is this is UK based forum. It’s not available on Netflix UK.

How would you know it’s not available in uk, the assumption is that it’s there to watch and everyone has access

‘Dark’ is fantastic. It’s German with subtitles, but if you can get on board with that it’s great.

No spoilers but it starts as a mystery of a child going missing, time travel is involved so there’s different years and future stuff (done really well) and the casting for the younger/present day/future characters is insanely good.

Because of the subtitles and the complexity of the plot you need to watch it ‘properly’ but it well worth it.

Second this, it's superb! Also if you enjoy scanidc Noir The Chestnut man is good. The fall is a great crime series. Narcos is a good watch too. Fot spooky season The haunting of Bly Manor is good.

The one I recommend to everyone

The Last Kingdom! Uhtred of Bebbanburg trying to reclaim his birthright - Bebbanburg (Bamburgh), intertwined with the story of King Alfred and the Vikings.

It’s the best show ever. Hence my username 😊

Vikings - Story of Ragnar Lothbrok, his wife Lagertha, his second wife Aslaug and their sons.

Vikings Valhalla - Set about 100 years after Vikings, the stories of Freydis and Leif, the children of Erik The Red, Harald, who would go on to become Harald Hardrada. It also features Aethelred The Unread, his wife Emma of Normandy, and her second husband Canute, and Godwin Wulfnothsson, who was King Harold Godwinsson father.

Interesting! I thought Vikings if not brilliant, really good. And although gory gave some sort of context re traditions, culture etc.

Viking Valhalla more some sort of Hollywood action thriller and gave up.

And have a feeling I gave up on the Last Kingdom as well.

Maybe I should try again!

But then I liked Britannia which most people thought was just plain strange!

I know you said you may not be into another crime show but I think these are hidden gems:

The Sinner — it is an intelligent crime series that questions perspective. Stars Bill Pullman.

River - another worthwhile crime drama with Nicola Walker and Stellan Skarsgard.

River is stunning.

Just to say thanks again for suggestions. Please keep on making them and if I dont acknowledge will just be lack of time.

I now have quite a long wish list.

For anyone interested I thought Black Doves just didn't work. It was like a Richard Curtis muddled in with a hip killer thriller.

It was written by the man who wrote Giri/Haji which was fantastic, but this was not!

And Sarah Lancashire just had a few small scenes.

I agree about Black Doves. Trying to grab the Killing Eve/Slow Horses crowd, I thought, and missing both. Apparently though Sarah Lancashire has a bigger role in the next series, so I'm semi-tempted to watch it just for her.

Giri/Haji is one of the great underrated shows of our time.

I don't know if either of these are Netflix, but I liked Pachinko and The Buccaneers (the latter is a bit like Bridgerton but with at least some substance).

I came to recommend Dark - the German sci-fi series. Absolutely brilliant!
Of course Fauda - they just released the new Season 4 and it’s on my list.
I also enjoyed The four Seasons (someone else recommended it already) and The Law according to Lydia Poet - a period legal drama, very good too.
