Hidden gems on Netflix - any recommendations?

I've been given Netflix as part of a package deal, for 2 years.

Finding it hard to navigate as at best they just give a short sentence as to what a series is about.

So apart from the well known "hits", does anyone have any recommendations. Equally interested in films as series.

I have a bit of a humour bypass, so dont often "get" what others find funny. A bit sad I know.

But like SciFi whether Ann Droid or the Silo, but not if they are horror films masquerading as SciFi.

Often like historical whether Wolf Hall or the cheesy Gilded Age.

Have probably watched too many crime dramas to get really excited, but there must be, well might be, series as good as Happy Valley, Blue Lights. (Not too good on gore and guts.)

And spies and political intrigue can be good.

Also have found some true live stories really intriguing.

So far I have added The Diplomat to my watch list because I have seen others on MN recommend it.

Any others?

Thanks, for anyone who has the time to make suggestions.

I just finished watching Homeland. It's old now but I did enjoy it.

Amandaland

Bridgerton. Ignore the historical inaccuracies as it’s just a bit of fun and I do love what they’ve done with some of the music.

The West Wing, Frasier, Seinfeld, of course. Dark Winds, Law & Order, The Diplomat with Rufus Sewell and Keri Russell. Designated Survivor. Mom.

Amandaland

Oh, is that on Netflix? I'm currently having internal battles with myself because we cancelled our TV licence because DP never watched live TV or used the iplayer and I only did a handful of times a year so it seemed like a waste of money. But the second series of Amandaland is one of the few things I have FOMO about so I'm thinking of getting the licence again but £180 is too much to pay for a few hours of TV.

My suggestion for the OP is Radioactive Emergency, which is a short drama series based on a true event that happened in Brazil in the 1980s where a city was contaminated with stolen radioactive material. Be warned that it is very harrowing but interesting and reasonably scientifically accurate.

Thanks so much. Nice range, and many I haven't heard of.

Word of mouth is always better.

Started watching last night on a friends recommendation Black Doves.

Not to sure ...

I jumped on DD’s sub when she came home from Uni over the summer. As you like historical stuff, try “My Brilliant Career” (Aussie historical classic).

DH and I are currently binging Legends (undercover civil servants fighting drugs gangs in ‘90’s).

We enjoyed very tongue in cheek The Gentleman (but I know others preferred the film).

CrowsInMyGarden · 26/09/2026 18:31

I enjoyed Paula. Was that Netflix though? Well it was good whatever I watched it on. Psychological crime thing

EmmaOvary · 26/09/2026 18:34

The Empress, if you like period dramas and don’t mind subtitles

Middleagemoper · 26/09/2026 18:43

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Learned about it on here ages ago. Very quirky and a great watch.

capelmustard · 26/09/2026 18:54

The Crown, especially the first 2 seasons with Claire Foy

WhoMeLooksAway · 26/09/2026 18:54

The Decameron is very clever and very funny. Set during the black death.

Chef (Jon Favreau film)

The Beast In Me is brilliant but not exactly hidden because its what Matthew Rhys just won an Emmy for.

The Watcher good short series.

Agree with Bridgerton - very cosy easy watching

For true life stories: Inventing Anna is compulsive viewing.

Therattt · 26/09/2026 19:13

Snow Piercer, Lupin, Fauda, Homeland, The Crown, The Capture. Bridgerton also good for easy watching!

JemimaTab · 26/09/2026 19:33

I thought Mindhunter was really good (a US drama series about the early days of FBI criminal profiling).

Seagulldancing · 26/09/2026 19:49

Im a fan of the Physical 100 series, if you don't mind subtitles. Its light entertainment with very fit people doing extraordinary challenges.

I don't think this is on Netflix in the UK now although it is good. " Unorthodox" is good though if you like Jewish drama.

Edited

Didn't he win the Emmy for Widow's Bay? Or did he win for both?

countrylifeorcitylife · 26/09/2026 20:01

If you like crime then Monster is fantastic

Kepler22B · 26/09/2026 20:03

It is a big hit but you might enjoy Wednesday, light hearted fantasy more than sci-fi.

Boreded · 26/09/2026 20:07

All of these subtitled not dubbed:
Sweet Home
Alice in Borderland
The Platform (1 and 2)
The 8 show
Four Hands
Love Alarm

I was also going to suggest this.

Department Q is a great detective series (investigating cold cases). Can’t wait for the next series!

The Four Seasons is excellent, proper bingeworthy!
