Did anyone watch this, I think it was the first part this week but I then watched the other 2 episodes on Iplayer

What a shit show this woman was.

Has it been on before? I’m sure I have seen it.

There have been other recent doc series about this, but I think this is a new BBC one. I can’t remember if the last one I watched was on Netflix, but definitely at least one new one in the past year about her. I’ve not yet watched the BBC one, but wonder how different it could actually be?

Yes the dad didn’t come across well at all, how awful but brave of the young boy getting help, rubbing a pepper mix into his wounds, on top of everything else those children went through, evil bitches. Awful women. The two older children seem very grounded and I hope Shari is successful in her campaigning.

I’m sure it’s the one I watched before on Disney plus. Is it the Devil in the family?

I’ve just read the oldest girls book. Her story is worse than I thought it was going to be really. It’s scary to think there are vast areas in America where religion is used to cover up so many things. Home schooling and even universities for a certain religion mean that some children have no chance to see how their lives differ from the majority.

Bringing your children up to be kind to others is a massive mistake.

I was a bit annoyed that they didn’t question the father harder. He seemed like a total wet blanket - and all that “I still love her” nonsense. Give me strength. He bears a lot of responsibility IMHO.

There’s another documentary about Jodi on Netflix - is it worth watching?

He remarried a few months ago so he's over her apparently.

But yes, he was full of shit and did nothing to protect his DC. I understand he was a victim of abuse too but claiming that he really believed Hilldebrants personality disordered acts of demonic possession when we can see she was just putting on a voice just don't wash.

Shari Franke’s book telling her story is a horrendous read but she is amazing.

The father is worse than useless.

Neither parent deserved those children in anyway. The dad infuriated me to be honest, but understand he’s been coercively controlled.

America is like a third world country and tinpot dictatorship rather than a modern civilised country as far as Im concerned

I noticed that too. The Dad came across really badly - didn't see his kids for a year in the hope that eventually his wife would go back to him? It's sad that the oldest son is now some sort of influencer. What happened to the other kids? Did their Dad get custody of them?

The dad was pretty thick. He didn't understand what "emaciated" meant. He didn't try to contact his children after the marriage split. He was quite happy to go along with the Youtube stuff when the money was rolling in.

The younger children are under 18 so weren't named/featured, just the oldest boy and girl. Who both seemed pretty well-adjusted given their childhoods.

Also to add - I know several Utah Mormon families who are equally appalled by what happened in that family. (And none of them have youtube channels).

He did seem a bit thick and I wondered what job he did prior to them making money from youtube, they seemed well off to start with, what was his career, how do you support so many kids?

What I never understand about America is that kids seem to go off and live by themselves, have cars etc, how is this funded, who pays for it, to go and live in your own apartment at 17 like the boy did, they dont have social housing over there in the same way, so who paid for that. How was Shari managing to continue at college, were her parents paying?

How did Kevin manage to pay for his apartment, was the youtube money still coming in for both of them or just into her account?

I'm sure they said near the start that he was a professor, which made not knowing what 'emaciated' means a bit odd.

The youngest four kids are with Kevin, who does not allow them on social media.

In Utah's Mormon community it would be unusual for kids to live independently unless at university/college. They marry young, I read that Chad who is only about 22 or 23 is married. Many of the Mormon families I know have large houses with basements or annexes and it's fairly common for them to have adult children living separately but on the same property.

Shari went to BYU - Brigham Young University - this is funded and run by the LDS (Mormon) church. Fees for members of the church are 50% of the standard fees. There are all sorts of scholarships and help for LDS members in financial hardship and the church would have stepped in to ensure she completed her studies. There is plenty I am uncomfortable with in the way the LDS operates, but they have loads of money sloshing around the church coffers and would definitely step up to help a family in this sort of situation to mitigate any bad publicity.

So he was at the same uni as his daughter during those times or only now?

If it was at the time, she is living there estranged, he is living somewhere else estranged and they're not talking?

What I found baffling also is that they're all mixed in with the neighbours in these bloody groups/mens groups connexions groups etc, how stifling and incestuous

And despite the neighbours having concerns about the kids and the functioning of the family which showed on the one hand they were sort of reasonable people, there were certainly a couple of those women who looked like utter bitches and I can imagine getting off on the gossip around the family (I hardly ever use the b word, but I really got that sense of them)

Mormons mix with other Mormons. I think it’s the same in any small community, you cone across the same people at school, church and social events.

I think religious people already have very opened minds as they believe in gods and prophets and demons so when you think that way, you can be easy prey for people who take advantage of that. They can be gullible. There is a Netflix doc on the Church of the Latter Day Saints and now that Warren Jeffries is in prison, those people were lost and were easy prey when one man said he was receiving messages and was to be the next leader and they believed him and ended up allowing themselves and their daughters to be abused. It's a depressing and sad watch.

I don’t know how the dad didn’t get prosecuted as well as he was totally complicit , definitely a case of someone loving their wife more than they loved their children . Hopefully they will rot away in prison and never get out .
