America is like a third world country and tinpot dictatorship rather than a modern civilised country as far as Im concerned

Ive never seen any other documentaries about the family, I'll look out for some more. Horrific

There is one on Netflix and one on Disney Plus.

Seen it before. Netflix I think. About 2 years ago.

The woman was a fucking psychopath. AND that women she did her little skits with...

Those poor, poor children...

The popular saying is "for good people to do evil - that takes religion." If you can convince someone that a person is evil and they are doing God's work by hurting them, or that a person is good and we should follow their teachings, it is is easy over time to groom someone into terrible things.

Watched all of them Netflix and the BBC/Disney+ one.
Also the current Netflix one on Jodi that delves into her background.

Shari reads her own audio book on audible.
It goes into much more detail of family life.

I hope the pair of them get the full 30, probably unlikely, but glad of the much lengthier stateside penal system than over here.

I've watched the first episode and found it upsetting.

I think religious people already have very opened minds as they believe in gods and prophets and demons so when you think that way, you can be easy prey for people who take advantage of that. They can be gullible. There is a Netflix doc on the Church of the Latter Day Saints and now that Warren Jeffries is in prison, those people were lost and were easy prey when one man said he was receiving messages and was to be the next leader and they believed him and ended up allowing themselves and their daughters to be abused. It's a depressing and sad watch.

Saw that one too - that was about a breakaway sect from the LDS which still practises polygamy. Not the standard church members.

I don't think Kevin didn't understand what the word emaciated meant. I think he was shocked by what he was hearing and processing so said 'what do you mean emaciated?' or whatever the exact words he used were, in the same way someone might say 'what do you mean dead?, I don't understand' when hearing about a sudden death and it just doesn't seem real or to make sense at first.

likelysuspect · 26/07/2026 09:58

I thought he literally asked 'what does emaciated mean'

I thought he literally asked 'what does emaciated mean'

He did but you have to take it on the context of the circumstances and the entire interview.

He hadn't seen his wife or kids for over a year then gets communication from Ruby telling him to pick his kids up from the Police station as there's been an emergency.

He arrives expecting to collect his kids then is taken into a room, read his rights and questioned for 25 minutes without the Police telling him what has happened but if you watch the full interview it comes across that they may be suspecting him of something.

At one point they are asking about Jodi and say 'so you value Jodi?' and he says 'I don't know what that means? He's brainwashed at this point and when they clarify what they mean he says Jodi is a honest and trustworthy individual.

In the 1st 25 minutes they ask lots of questions about discipline, Jodi, the separation with Ruby, 8 passengers, the current physical state of his DC and so on.

Early in the interview he says he was contacted by someone to collect his kids but he declines to say who. It was Ruby.

At one point they ask if he has any questions and he says 'I want to know what is going on and why I've been asked to pick up my kids' but they don't give any information.

They try to trip him up or the detective was confused but they claim he said that someone from the Police station contacted him to collect his kids when he had never said that but that obviously looked to him like they were trying to trick him.

After 25 minutes of questions with him not knowing what was going on, they say about the boy knocking on doors and being emaciated and then Kevin says 'what does emaciated mean?' and the detective explains and then talks about duct tape and wounds and Kevin says 'what?' a minute or so later they say the DC are under medical care right now and Kevin says 'what does that mean?'.

They leave him alone for a few minutes and then come back in and Kevin says he feels like they've got his DC confused with somebody else and he's having a hard time accepting why they're saying.

So him saying I don't know what that means/what does that mean happened 3 times in about 30 minutes and I think it was just him wanting confirmation in a high-stress situation where he was being interviewed by Police under caution without knowing why he's being questioned then has a bomb dropped that his kids look like they were being tortured.

Shari Franke’s book telling her story is a horrendous read but she is amazing.

The father is worse than useless.

Edited

What sort of things does she talk about? Was the Mother abusive before Jodie and taking the little kids away etc?

Very, very niche beliefs even in the FLDS.

Sam Bateman, the subject of the False Prophet documentary on Netflix sustained a serious traumatic brain injury in 2000 and after that was known to be quite disabled cognitively and emotionally as was clear to see in the show.

A few years before Christine started filming him his 1st wife left him as he said God had told him to marry their 12 year old daughter. She was granted a release from him by the FLDS which is virtually unheard of, Warren Jeffs kicked Sam out of the FLDS and she remains part of the FLDS.

He was going around the community trying to gain followers but 99% of them thought he was handicapped or nuts, shunned him and kept calling the Police.

It was only 3 men and some of their wives who were apparenty already open to the idea of homosexuality, group sex sometimes in front of their own children, and raping children, that joined.

So the brainwashing excuses and religious beliefs are valid to a point but when they don't apply to the overwhelming majority of others with the same background, cultures and religious beliefs who reject them, they become less valid.

Yes. Verbally, emotionally and physically. Which Kevin did nothing to stop.

The older kids said when Jodi 1st came on the scene, Ruby actually became much less abusive for a while but over time, with Jodis influence, things got weirder and weirder and then we know what happened to the younger kids.

Yes, long before this.
