THE AFFAIR on ITV: anyone watching?

JaneFondue · 16/03/2026 13:19

I am rewatching this as I was so blown away the first time I watched, back in 2015 maybe. Ruth Wilson is incredible in this, as is Maura Tierney and Dominic West too in his smarmy, smug way. It tells the tale of an affair from two viewpoints, the man and the woman.

It's brutal viewing though, and I can see why Ruth left.

Interesting. Had me hooked with the first 3 episodes. Liked the alternative viewpoints, the more than a waitress and her grief over her little boy.
Sadly they milked it.Bored of it already

I'm sort of hate watching this. I absolutely and completely despise Noah, he repulses me! And I find him so revolting I have to look away when he and Alison are having sex!

I think parts of it are too slow (all of it, not just the sex!) and there's a lot of lingering looks and shots where nothing is really happening.

Also, my eldest son looks quite a bit like Cole so I like him and keep shouting at Alison to go back to him!

I'm only at the beginning of series 2 so don't know what's yet to come.

Grin

How did ya guess?! And also A Woman Of Substance, and The Other Bennett Sister.'

😄😄 its the best trash tv, has to be done

I've got The Capture - so good

EmeraldRoulette · 22/03/2026 20:32

Overall, I thought this was very good

There were some bits that I totally didn't get emotionally and I think sometimes if you miss that, you are left puzzled about character motivation

But overall, I thought it was excellent

Ruth Wilson was amazing

Joshua Jackson is really good. There's one particular moment that I really remember with him, but I don't want to do any spoilers.

I don't think I would watch it again because it can be quite a downer.

it was very beautiful to look at.

purpleme12 · 22/03/2026 20:47

Just started watching it and that scene at the beginning where the son faked his hanging was really shocking

I really thought it was real

BoredZelda · 22/03/2026 20:49

I loved it when it came out. Will definitely watch again!

purpleme12 · 22/03/2026 20:59

And when they put the girl who choked in the car on her booster seat they put the seatbelt BEHIND her so there was only a lap seatbelt on her?!?

purpleme12 · 22/03/2026 21:02

Why is the grandma trying to give the girl an eating disorder?!?

YourWinter · 22/03/2026 21:29

I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d expected to, having thought the first series was brilliant (but downhill all the way after that).

Cole’s mother was Wendy in St Elmo’s Fire, you wouldn’t think she’d been a 1980s “brat pack” actress!

TheOtherBoleynSister · 25/03/2026 12:26

Why on earth have they only uploaded series 1-3? When it’s been out years. Google says season 4 will be available on itvx later this year and season 5 in 2027!

F that. I’ll take out a free trial with Paramount.

Indigovelvet · 26/03/2026 17:04

Can see why Ruth Wilson complained about there being too many awkward sex scenes to do and arguing with the director about it and then quitting. She did right. This was before Me Too. Stopped watching after the 4th episode. Felt sorry for her.

JaneFondue · 26/03/2026 17:42

So annoying there's no S 4 and 5!

I finished S2. Which is brilliant.
The older women- Helen, Margaret, a shrink played by Cynthia Nixon- have some great lines. One scene where Helen is listening to Noah moan on about being overlooked for the Pen/ Faulkner and suddenly says " Actually, this isn't my problem any more". Maura Tierney has such great comic timing.
This show- with the alternativr viewpoints- is such a scathing expose of men and they way they sexualise/ use women while thinking that they are knights in shining armour. But Noah gets his comeuppance.

I've just finished Season 1. I'm finding it quite hard going tbh, not helped at all by all the masses of long ad breaks. It hasn't really captured my attention.

I'm pretty disappointed that there was no slow burn leading up to the huge plot development that comes out in episode 6. It's all very sudden and episode 6 seemed rushed. I could have done with a bit more tension around this earlier on.

The first 5 episodes being pretty much nothing but the affair was a wee bit yawn for me. Like, I get it, they fancy the pants off each other ... and what else?

TheOtherBoleynSister · 27/03/2026 20:11

The ad breaks are annoying. 4 ad breaks for 3 mins a time do add up. Another reason to get a free trial with Paramount.

poppybuttons · 27/03/2026 21:07

@JaneFondue I’m on series 4 via Paramount. It definitely has some good and some bad episodes, there was a storyline in series 3 I really didn’t like.

Mumteedum · 28/03/2026 18:20

I'm up to s3 now. It's definitely a bit off with some storylines, agreed.

I always liked Helen best.

WhiCh storyline was that?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 28/03/2026 19:14

The later seasons were a bit meh (except for Furcat!)

poppybuttons · 28/03/2026 19:20

TheOtherBoleynSister · 28/03/2026 18:42

WhiCh storyline was that?

Edited

The prison scenes.

kerstina · 28/03/2026 19:45

Well it is the first time watching this for me and I am loving it so binge watching it . Just over midway first series. I am a Dominic West fan but don’t particularly like his accent or personality in this ! Going to watch more later in bed.

JaneFondue · 29/03/2026 17:28

S 3 is awful. Like it was written by a different person.
What is the point of Juliette?
Also hate the whole contrived prison guard storyline.
Poor Helen. Awful parents, awful husband, awful children.

OP posts:
Mumteedum · 29/03/2026 17:38

..but Helen gets lucky with Vic I think. I like him.

Juliette is awful and the whole sexed up student dinner parties. I don't get this weird having students round socially thing that ends up in TV and film. I'm a lecturer. It makes me cringe.

Figgygal · 29/03/2026 17:41

Absolutely agree with the season 3 hate it was terrible
I know lots of people don't like the last season but I really liked it and the last episode is one of my favourite every final episodes of a show

TheOtherBoleynSister · 29/03/2026 18:16

So was the prison guard stuff all in Noah’s head?

JaneFondue · 29/03/2026 19:19

So was the prison guard stuff all in Noah’s head?

I didn't put a spoiler alert in the title, so unsure if I should answer!
