Two episodes into Pluribus - does it get better?

I started Pluribus a couple of days ago because of the hype.

I don't normally like post-apocalyptic stuff, especially things written by men. But the critical acclaim seemed to suggest it'd be a bit different, meatier, less formulaic etc.

But I'm two episodes in and it seems like the same old shit.

Does it get better? Will it grow on me? Am I missing something?

It’s a slow burn but I really liked it - I’d recommend sticking with it!

Serafee · 27/01/2026 14:25

it does but its not as good as all the hype

BillieWiper · 27/01/2026 14:26

Yes it does. Much better.

Egglio · 27/01/2026 14:26

I watched it recently and I felt similarly to you. It didn't grab me at all. Although the concept had some interesting parts, there was lots that just didn't fit together. I won't rush to watch a second season. It didn't seem to know what it wanted to be.

BishyBarnyBee · 27/01/2026 14:31

I liked it and it did grab me but I haven't watched a lot of similar stuff so it felt quite fresh to me.

If it hasn't grabbed you after two episodes I'd let it go, I don't think it particularly gets better.

Limth · 27/01/2026 14:48

Thank you. I'll give it half hour tonight but be ready to bail on it.

It grew on me, once I realised it wasn’t really about an alien virus apocalypse and was more of a psychological drama. I found it quite thought provoking, but perhaps not as gripping as I’d hoped.

Elektra1 · 27/01/2026 15:01

I absolutely loved Pluribus.

Limth · 27/01/2026 15:02

@KitKatKrums See, I think I'd find the stuff about alien RNA more interesting. I'm finding the psychological, thought-provoking aspects a bit obvious and clunky.

I absolutely loved it, thought it was brilliant but it took me a couple of episodes to get fully into it.

CocoPlum · 27/01/2026 15:20

I love it, but you have to understand that the creator is very much a slow storyteller. I don't mean that as a criticism but just as a fact. Better Call Saul was SUCH a slow burn and all the better for it.

If it's not for you that's fine, but I'm trusting the process!

PersephoneSmith · 27/01/2026 15:29

I love it and I was gripped straight away, I'm on about episode 6 I think.
However post-apocalyptic sci-fi is my absolute favourite genre 😃

LancreWowhawk · 27/01/2026 15:54

It's very clever, well acted, well scripted, and has high production values. I can completely see why it's generating the hype.

Fundamentally, though, I just found it really depressing - but then post-apocalyptic sci-fi is absolutely not my bag. Unfortunately, it very much is DH's bag, so I've endured through more than may fair share of it, and enough to feel justified in saying no more. I bailed after 2 episodes, DH finished it and loved it.

MrsFrumble · 27/01/2026 15:58

I love it. Partly I think because Carol is such an unusual protagonist, and her actions are so entirety motivated by grief and trauma rather than just moving the plot along at a more conventional pace, which is interesting to me. I end up watching a lot of sci-fi action stuff because it’s DH’s favourite genre, so I’m appreciating the attempt to take a different approach within the conventions of the framework.

Also New Mexico is one of my favourite places so I’m happy to watch Vince Gillian dramas just for the setting!

Nomedshere · 27/01/2026 18:15

Just finished it. Enjoyed it. Poignant

IwantToRetire · 27/01/2026 18:15

I managed 2 and a bit episodes, not knowing it was popular, but liking SciFi.

I thought it was pathetic. The acting style awful, and if it was meant to be "deep" the main character was just so uninteresting.

Or maybe for me just too American style tv. Thinking itself more clever that it actually is.

But we each have out own tastes.

For instance I thought Murderbot was not only good, but interesting dialogue etc.. But know others dont agree!

I gave up after one episode.

AmazingGraced · 27/01/2026 18:19

I switched off halfway through the first episode. I hated it.

anotheruser76326 · 27/01/2026 18:52

I gave up 25 minutes in. I just didn’t get it

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2026 18:52

I love it. But then I love post apocalyptic stuff. Hate fantasy though - you can keep Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and on my just about got through the Lord of the Rings stuff (the books are impenetrable).

IsabellaCoral · 27/01/2026 18:56

I loved it - and Murderbot.

Carol sturcker is great, and the premise is interesting for a change. Stick with it.

LancreWowhawk · 28/01/2026 09:30

Weirdly, I did enjoy Murderbot. I didn't expect to, which is why I'm usually prepared to give things a couple of episodes. But now, I bail if I'm not loving it rather than ploughing on.

Limth · 28/01/2026 11:22

I tried Pluribus for about ten minutes last night but found myself planning recipes for the week while watching it. So I gave up. Life's too short to plough on with TV or books you're not enjoying!

Murderbot was fantastic! Hilarious and also sharp and thought-provoking. I really enjoyed Pluribus; I liked that it was slow-moving and the main character had flaws and did things she wouldn’t have done under normal circumstances, but was also resourceful- and the storyline with the Paraguyan guy was good too.

angelcake20 · 28/01/2026 23:08

We gave up after the first episode but have debated trying again as it’s still recommended so regularly.
